Based solely on context from past readings I had an understanding of ersatz as sorta the same as “ad hoc”, like hastily thrown together maybe? I looked it up after this and it’s more like “knockoff”, which does fit the clue given… but I kinda still prefer my meaning
This one had some really obscure stuff like two Italian words crossing?! Broke my nearly 3 month streak of no look-ups. There were just too many crosses I wasn't confident on to check all the combinations. I had to give up after an hour and start double-checking things online. JJ WATT / JEDI cross was actually my undoing. I originally put JD WATT and thought Dedi Knight could have been an actor I didn't know. I did mark that square in pencil as one I wasn't sure of, but JEDI is so obvious in retrospect, that if I could have just put that it confidently, I probably could have managed the rest of the squares which were mostly vowels. Oh well, I still learned a lot from it, but this has been a tough week over all for puzzles.
In general, you're often not going to get good results with Google translate - there are just too many possible ways to translate a lot of words. (Especially "yours," because French has both an informal and a formal "you")
I think this one is much easier if you are familiar with the NATO alphabet, which I mostly am through cryptic crosswords and the quiz show Only Connect.
Why was gazpacho "course?" Because soup is a course? I did not get that one at all. Like, I get how Clydesdale is a horse... but I feel that would have to have been "Golf soup," (I know, that doesn't make sense). And I looked it up, just in case it meant that, but no, the literal meaning of gazpacho is "soaked bread."
The theme is the NATO term for a letter of the alphabet and then the actual clue. So Charlie horse is a horse that starts with the letter C. Golf course is a course that starts with G. In a multi-course meal, one course might be a soup, such as gazpacho. The "golf" part can be ignored other than telling you that the first letter is G.
Were the clues supposed to be common phrases? What are Charlie Horse and Tango Number? The clues just mean Horse starting with C and Number starting with T. Golf Course didn't work for me because I wouldn't say that Gazpacho is a course in a meal. It's the Soup course and Gazpacho is a type of soup. So the clue should be Golf Soup meaning Soup starting with G.
Living vicariously through you with these crossword puzzles! Found you on tik tok but I love the TH-cam content!
I'm glad you're here!

I had so much trouble with Knight, too. (I'm not a Stars Wars person, but finally got it.)
Scandinavian Airlines is stylized as SAS.

Yeah I wonder if they're tougher because Will Shortz is editing again
@@Rangsk I've been wondering the same thing myself.

I agree with you that it should have been Golf Soup
Golf soup isn't a well-known phrase though, is it?

@@Rangsk Well MTG thinks the gazpacho were a vicious police force.
