It's nice to see that sailing has grown out of the hidebound traditionalism of the past and is finally taking advantage of advanced engineering.

The limitation was mostly caused by the materials available to them. You cannot build these boats with wood .

Why not use legs to drive these instead of arms?

It's interesting what could be record speed of grinding of those winches.

Can you link them to the canting keel ?

The keel is controlled with a separate hydraulic system, it requires much more energy than can be produced without the aide of pressurized oil.

Wow what a quick reply. Many thanks. But it is possible I suppose to move the keel without a motor ?

Yes it is possible. You could attach a rotary pump to the drive system and with enough energy, or crew on the handles as it is, move the keel. This is how the hydraulics were driven on the recent class of America's Cup boats, due to the strict design rules that dictated how the system could create, store, and use energy. The crews would pump the handles, or pedals, to build pressure in an accumulator and then release when they needed to raise or lower a foil.
