So we go wheeling again in Washington, and this time we completely destroy our driveshaft on the Jeep. But that doesn't stop us from enjoying off roading in Elbe Hills!

I agree about the mud. I avoid it every chance I get. When I was younger I went through the mud every time I seen a mud hole and I got tired of replacing bearings and cleaning it afterwards.

    Ouch! That thing was mangled!
I bought a stock XJ last year with a bad rear end vibration. crawled under it and could see the U-joint was worn all the way into the yoke. I was amazed that it was still attached! Since I had a three hour drive home and didn't know if it would make it, I dropped the rear driveshaft and drove it home as a front wheel drive. It worked great! I love that you can do this with a lot of Jeeps.

This “UB-2B” Segment totally brings back some Interesting “Wheeling” Adventures during a very irresponsible time in my life!
(Note: I really have not changed all that much, accept my purchasing power, so vehicles get fixed immediately now!)
It was a typical warm summer evening (technically early mornin). A group of friends & I were still had not reached our fill for entertainment after a typical Saturday Night Keg Party! We live in the Northwest Corner (The Bershire Mountains) of Connecticut! Anyway I had a 94’ YJ I purchased upon High School graduation. (This vehicle was responsible for getting me to & from college for breaks & holidays.). We decided to go wheeling in the Old Bible Camp, which is thousands of acres full of ponds swamps rivers steep ledge mountain trails etc! Part of this particular trail become one with the river that ran parallel to it. We had gotten a lot of rain in previous weeks and we had not been on that trail in over a month. Coming up to the edge of this, now flooded trail, I decided to hit in 2 gear 4 hi so I would have plenty of wheel speed with power! Got 3/4 of the way through and came to a stop., I backed up, full blown mud flinging aggressive back n forth each time getting a tiny bit further. On my final reverse path I blew reverse gear! No big deal still have forward. Well, fortunately I made it to the other side and that kinda ended the evening as I pulled out of the camp on the south side to take paved roads home. Not the best of option because we were drinking pretty heavily. Atleast in the woods n trails no traffic or cops.
Within a few days, still having no reverse, I decide to go for a trail ride at a friends farm. Worse case scenario he had tractors if I got stuck. Well, I did t get stuck but upon leaving the trail sand entering back to pavement, I decided to show my buddy how to do a side step but out. Basically a burnout in place with a manual transmission. It was an amazing burnout until the rear end broke as I shifted from 3rd to 4th Well, like you guys. I locked in 4 hi and now had a front wheel drive mono reverse YJ. Mind you this s my daily driver. Well if things cannot seem to get worse they did. A few days later The clutch master cylinder blew so depressing a clutch to shift was no longer a luxury. College also was starting in a few days. Well in 4-hi always parking strategically where I would not have to back up, and shifting via engine/tranny speed alignment life was great. Stop lights were a little tricky, because I would have to come to a stop and without that clutch it made things interesting. So after down shifting to 1st I would pop tranny in nuetral holding the break and turn vehicle off. While the vehicle was off and traffic light red, I would put the tranny back into first, watch the light carefully and as soon as the light turned green I would crank the engine gear giving it gas and boom we were off and rolling again. The starter worked great to get the vehicle going again. This went for 3 months until I had enough money to fix. Good times. Thanks for sharing your stories.

Another fine example why I don't run boulders unless i have too. Last few times i played in rocks, did not end well. I have an AEV rear diff/pinion skid now. I miss your wheelin' videos, great to see them again. Considering what you just put the jeep thru, broken DS is cheap. Need more ground clearance? Upgrade to portal axles. It's only money.

Looking forward to getting my stock driveshafts swapped out with some better gears.
Also looking forward to my bestop trektop ultra to show up out here in Hawaii. Been jealous of y’all’s Jeep since I saw the video swapping to the trektop. Did y’all sell the hardtop?
Lol, ya I think Kevin is pretty big about deep cleaning but mud can be rough to clean out. If you didn’t see the Hawaiian soil just sticks too everything sometimes taking multiple washes to get off.

When were you up there? I tried to go last week and there was a "Forest Closed" sign and big-ass steel gate blocking the road. I had to settle for some snow driving on a logging road near Ashford. I got a big dent on my fender on the old Landcruiser first time I went on the Alder Loop Trail. I got stuck between a big rock and a protruding tree root. Oh well, I didn't buy her to stay on the pavement.

At 10:40 you needed some bias-ply trepadors to grab those rocks

that was serious driveshaft carnage! Super impressed with the WARN winch! And YAY for you both hanging out in the PacNW!! This has been my home since 94 and I love it except the mud ;-)
Any future Portland, OR events/ops holler!

Me looking at a 'road' made of pointy boulders: Yeah, but no. That's gonna make some carnage!
Half way through the vid, wincing in mechanical empathy: There's no shame in winching, guys!
Shout out to Dirt Lifestyle, too! Great channel as well.

40’s big hemi mud and Kevin’s foot can do almost as much damage as a turbo!!

Except our engine was never in danger this time. 🤣

Frankly, I'm still surprised that the other engine died - Never thought it would be that weak.
Also thought there was better access to decent fuel in the US !!

@@Grumpy_old_Boot I don't think it was weak. I think the tuning solution wasn't up to the task. Run any engine with a bad tune and it will die. The reason they had to keep putting that octane booster in wasn't really because of the fuel, they didn't have the control over the engine computer they needed to properly tune it for the fuel they had available. Due to state laws some sates don't have the same fuels available. If you were traveling cross-country, you would tune the engine to tolerate the lowest octane fuel you would find. If you can't tune the engine properly, you need to boost the octane.
It seemed like the engine computer wanted to run way more timing advance and/or a leaner fuel mixture than was safe at their boost and octane levels. They upped the octane to prevent detonation and/or pre-ignition. Not sure if they tried colder plugs. I can't remember now.
I think they were also towing, which further increases in cylinder pressure, another risk for detonation.
They needed a nice safe tune for their conditions and the tuning solution couldn't make that happen.

I guess .. it was still a surprise though.
Most modern engines are made to take turbo's, so they can use them in more vehicles.
