    I understand why you have the tape measure, but you can save yourself a few ounces. Get a seamstress tape. Essentially just a fabric tape measure. Usually have both metric and English and weight nothing.

    Aaron, I use Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Replant (Repel Brand) and it works very well. It's not as toxic as DEET and it won't melt synthetic gear or clothing. It works well for the bugs in Texas, I have no way to know about Colorado and the critters you battle up there. It might be a better option for your children as well. Enjoyed the vid, thanks.

    Is this your emergency kit or supposed everything kit for day hikes? As an emergency kit I think you have too much redundancy in the kit itself. It should be the redundant equipment to your pack equipment. For example 3 lights. Your pack load should already have a good flashlight as primary so you're carrying more emergency gear. If this is your day hike essentials gear bag then it works but there are equipment that is nice but too low function for my tastes. Example again the flashlights. If I'm out and stuck after dark I want a light I can see with and be seen with like at least a 500+ lumen light. For my kit I have a handheld and headlamp that both fit that lumen output and use the same battery. A bit heavier then your three lights but I'll trade that weight somewhere else.

  • @alexvthooft
    @alexvthooft 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great kit! Also good to know that other people have pretty heavy kits as well!
    What I am missing is shelter. Fire is nice and all, but constant rain and no shelter is going to get you into trouble quick.
    I would suggest space blankets or something similar. Cheap, small, light. I tend to put those everywhere.. car, packs, kits. If not for using as a blanket then for using it as a makeshift tarp.

    You do not need a waterproof container for “bic” brand lighters. You can totally submerge them in water, blow the internals off with multiple deep breaths, and they will work very well. Try it yourself. I took a Dave Canterbury course and he showed us this is very possible. I did it myself at the bushcraft course and it works.

    I’d add zipties, sewing kit, lip balm, ear plugs, floss, nail clipper, wire saw, a small bag of tinder, and here in the east coast, tick removal device. These add little weight.
    I keep only one torch: the Fenix e12. It takes 1 aa, great throw, water tight, and small. So I need only 1 extra aa.
    I’d replace bic and spark thrower with box of waterproof matches since you have the fire steel.

    Sail needle, some braided fishing line (stronger than thread),55 gal trash bag, couple of zip lock freezer bags, length of plastic/ silicone tubing with a short piece of copper or brass tubing in one end (use as straw or use end with metal tube as fire bellows...metal tubing won't melt if too close to the fire).

    Pretty decent. Some say too much, others are saying not enough. You have a full backpack that has your other main concerns. For a condensed bag that can be moved from pack to pack without carrying your whole house, it's enough to get you by. Maybe take a few ideas from the comments but its like some people think youre only carrying that bag with and nothing else. You know what you're doing lol

      @duncdunc76 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Fuller, Respectfully have to disagree! I've been rocking a one handed trekker as my EDC knife for over 10 years and they are pretty darn tough for what they are and how much they cost. The military model is pretty much the same knife minus the super useful tweezers and toothpick. The US military version is a cool knife to be sure but not as useful as the trekker imo. And certainly not tougher or more durable by any means unless I'm mistaken and if so please elaborate on why the military version is tougher.

    The bic lighter case is primarily used so the lever does not get pressed down resulting in an empty lighter. The empty lighter can be used as a sparkler in emergency, providing it still sparks.

    A larger set of tweezers could come in handy. I've used SAK tweezers and the ones that come with the Leatherman Style CS and even though they're compact, they don't have the strength a larger sat does. They are also good for times when your dexterity isn't as good, like you mentioned. And to top it off, they're more precise than a multitool.
    I carry a set in my bag that I got for $1 at Walmart and they're great.

    Did you have anything to boil water in? It's interesting looking at a kit designed to be used in what is obviously cold snowy whether. I live in a coastal part of Australia near Sydney so it never really gets that cold (although it rains a lot) so my pack is a little different.

    • @hal7444
      @hal7444 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your pack follows your needs, that's why yours is different. Something to boil water in, actually surpasses the scope of a survival kit. It actually belongs, hmmm, “to the rest” of the equipment :D I carry an old canteen that comes along with a pot in which the canteen fits into. Both made from aluminum. They used to be Mexican Army standard issue lots of years ago. Try to find something similar. The pot adds minimal overall weight and it really comes in handy.

    I love your videos.
    I like both Maxpedition and Vanquest products very much. However, something you said, brought up a question. I have had both a Maxpedition and a Vanquest cross body bags stolen on 2 separate occasions. And I had another Maxpedition bag stolen years ago. I lost 2 firearms and a ton of gear.
    Do you have any recommendations on anti-theft measures? I do have a tracker device in my new one. I was watching the old ones closely. They were stolen while sitting very close to me, about 5 or 6 feet. No one can have them on their body all the time.
    I guess now I’m extremely paranoid. No longer do I let people I don’t know get close to me on the trail, or anywhere else where they may “grab and run.” I am a stocky 6 foot, martial artist/weight lifter, but I’m not a sprinter. I can’t catch a fast runner.
    Now, I attach bank line, or paracord to the bag and myself, if I take it off for any length of time. Also, I have made a cover that goes over the bag to disguise its contents and keep hands off its zippers. However, I have to carry my pistol in a holster on my side. Which may solve the problem by itself just by its presence. But there are times I’d rather have it concealed.
    There are other measures I take too. But the end result is babysitting my bag is souring my enjoyment of the outdoors.
    Any thoughts on this subject???

      Papi Maximus I should have said that from the first one to the last one was about a 15 year period of time, give, or take a couple of years. To me, it’s all just like it happened yesterday.
      The second One was near the Smoky Mountains. I had it setting right beside me. The little idiot came from behind and ran down the trail. I’m healthy, but walk with a cane sometimes because my knee will occasionally hurt. I just couldn’t run as fast as him, not even close. That guy was gone before I could blink my eyes. I looked for hours. I had No luck whatsoever in finding him.
      The third one was stolen here in eastern Kentucky. I was on an ATV that day but I was about 1,500 feet, or more from it. I kept watching this suspicious guy that was with some other people, but pretty far away.
      I put my bag down to go behind a tree to urinate. He ran over and grabbed it, quickly ran to a dirt bike and took off. My ATV only goes about 40 to 45 MPH. The dirt bike was way faster. However, I trailed his tracks to the blacktop. I never found him, but I am still looking. And the police have the serial numbers and description of the bike and guy. They think they know who he is, but can’t find him.
      The first one was stolen a few years by a guy that used to work for me. I never got it back. But I did get a little revenge on him . . .. (nothing illegal)
      And I already had the idea of making a cover to protect zippers and flaps from mud and rain. I made one out of lightweight, heavily waxed, canvas. I cut it to a round shape and sewed small diameter, bungee cord around the circumference. It just sorta goes over it with elastic tension. It slips on and off that way. It also helps with prying eyes, rain, mud, and gives better visibility. I painted an American flag on one side and the other side bright orange. I waxed it with melted bees wax after. I and also wash it off easily. I may make a cameo one.

    • @darvinpreece601
      @darvinpreece601 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Papi Maximus I agree. It would be very satisfying. 😈
      I have put a tracking device thing in my newest one. It is supposed to have gps capability, but I haven’t tried that yet. I’m going to probably this week.

    I find that to carry as a backup (also for tent guys, taps and such) I get way more value from dyneema cordage than I do from 550 paracord. For the same breaking strain, it's a fraction of the weight and bulk, meaning a can carry more capability with less penalty. It's got some downsides in use, like feel, doesn't like friction, cost, etc. but I still feel these downsides are outweighed by the lightness and bulk reduction.

Many of the other items are for “emergency/survival” situations. Since I am not going out and purposely trying to just live out of this pouch of course they wouldn’t have much use. Gideon, I love your videos man, I watch every one of them. Huge EDC guy here, I like to switch up my edc packs often. Here's what I think about your videos. I really like them for their informative nature. I like to check out your entire gear list so that maybe I'll pick one or two items and be like "Hey I'm gonna add that to my own pack." It's good that you have diversity and lots of cool gagdets in there.
    HOWEVER I am 100% sure these packs are NOT practical to haul around DAILY. And here's what I mean. You keep listing 1.5kg pouches, 5-6kg dayhike backpacks, etc. You won't need 9/10 of those items on any outing, so in my opinion, learn to imrpovise, and most importantly: pick multi-functional items, and if you want to take a LOT of stuff with you, "just in case", pick iightweight items. They are emergency items. I'm pretty sure some people can't even go to the store without their 10KG survival bugout SHTF backpack! :D
    I know a lot of people will disagree with me and that's fine! I just prefer to keep my hike/EDC packs ultralight (but using only items I am certain I will need), and my Car pack heavy (with items I MIGHT need), since I'm not the one hauling around that weight.

    you mentioned that you wouldnt have the measuring tape in there if you werent a gear reviewer, but i carry one just like it in my EDC just in my pocket along with my tiny flashlight, nail clippers, mylar blanket, credit card multi-tool, some duck tape, and some cordage. that list there is basically my left pocket. right [pocket is knife and phone and then cargo pockets have things like a pocket saw, battery banks and charging cords, momentary flashlights and hand sanitizer, and all the other little things i might need. all in all theres about 25 pieces to my e"extended" EDC, but 15 for just my average day one. wow i just rambled on there, basically the tape measure goes right in the duck tape organizer i made for the stuff in my left pocket. i have it with my every day. you wouldnt think that you need it outside of measuring knife blade lengths for gear reviews or anything but it sure does come in handy. i may not use it every day, or even every week, but those few times i do need one it certainly does come in handy.
    (PS: i removed the keychain by undoing the screw on the side a bit and then yanking it out with some needle nose pliers. much better for pocket carry without the keychain.

    Maybe it is just me but I always carry a "dumb" phone with me with a prepaid SIM in it. Why? Well it is just for speed when shit hits the fan I can just press 911 and don't have to unlock my smartphone or anything like that. Phone I use is caterpillar ip68 graded and it cost about 50 euros. SIM in there cost like 10 euros and it's always with me wherever I go. Battery lasts 2 weeks before I have to charge it again. I started carrying it after there was a fire in the building I lived and that time I had only a smartphone. So I have some experience on high stress situation and that's when the motor skills come to effect . But hey still a very nice kit and great video! Keep it up man!

    I like your load out but just a suggestion. Separate your EDC from your "survival kit" just do the basics. Personally I have my kit available to swap between bags. Travel or edc doesn't matter. Also the Victorinox knife is rockin! My advice if you do nothing else to the kit trade the hiker for a Champ! If I had to choose 1 thing to be dropped of on a desert island with it would be a victorinox swisschamp. Great video! Keep um coming!

    My 2 Cents. I think you made a mistake when you grabbed the Paracord. My Military Training and Experience taught me that Survival Kits have only one Purpose: and that's to stay in one spot until it's an Emergency. There are People in the Military whose only Job is to go through the Kits on a Regular Schedule, and ensure that items that are Expired are Replaced, put in Upgrades if any, then put them back in it's assigned location. They are NOT Backup Storage! Remember that Murphy's Law has extra meaning in the Back Country! Remember when you NEEDED a Tourniquet a few years back? Now the Kit itself isn't bad. And the main thing I'd add is a SWAT-T to the front pocket, because it's a Flat package and can stay sealed up. Hope this helps. Thanks again for the Video and Take Care.

      @@papimaximus95 I've seen a couple of tampons frequently included on ultralight hikers lists. They are multi-use items and if the worst comes to the worst, you could offer them to a female hiker that has been caught short.

    I would lose the Exotac spark thing. You already have a spark with your Bic lighter. I would add a plastic credit card sized magnifying glass instead. Should probably have a couple medical items in there. Band Aids, Advil, etc would not take up much space.
