I just went from a Mustang bass to the Guild Starfire 1 bass. I fell in love with the look of it in Pelham Blue, and the fat, woody sound is exactly what I wanted my Mustang to sound like with Dunlop flats on it. Really a wonderful instrument, and blown away with the build quality for only $669.

Just got this bass! And it’s really good especially for the price!
Slapped some TI flats on it, and did an immediate setup (truss rod adjustment and lowered the bridge height and now plays good.
Out of the box though ,it had high action probably from different climates (I reside in Canada) creating a bow on the neck.

Dear Pat, thanks for this video. I had a chance to actually try this bass and I must say it's a way above its price category (with exception of tuners). The sound is really interesting, in a good way. PUs work great, bringing the best of hollow body bass sound. I have also Jolana Studio hollow body bass made in Czechoslovakia in 1968, and the dry sound is pretty similar to this HB 60, but the rest of the sound sweetness comes from PUs. I think that you would be positively surprised with this Jolana coming with Czech Tesla branded PUs form the 43 years past.
Now I regret that I let this HB 60 slide out of my hands, and at the moment there is no even one piece to buy in Serbia.
All the best pat and all of your viewers.

Great review! I wonder what the EQ on your amp was set to? Does the bass come with round wound strings? The bridge on this bass is a floating bridge because it is not fixed to the body. Intonation on a bridge like this is tricky, as you must slide the bridge up or down the body to adjust intonation. The inlays on the neck are probably called "thumb" because a player can wrap their thumb around the neck on the short scale bass. Overall this bass appears as an crazy value for the money and has great tone. I am getting one!

I bought one second hand for hardly €100. Got flatwounds on it which improved the sound considerably. It had fret buzz which I fixed with a simple 1/4 turn of the truss rod. It's a very well balanced bass with no neck dive at all and it's pretty lightweight too. The body is very thin. Both playing sitting as standing up it's one of the most comfortable basses I ever had in my hands. The tuners are indeed not top quality, not a disaster but I do consider replacing them. The pickups are ok, not super top class but not low budget style either. The bindings between the neck and the fretboard are quite sharp so the bottom edge of the neck may hurt your fretting hand after some playing. Anyway it's certainly a bass worth buying.

Thanks for the video , Was between this and an Ibanez Artcore and took the chance on this. From a few HB owners I have spoken to they had to do those "5 things": fret clean up, replace strings (I only use flats), adjust action, truss rod, and may replace the tuners. Another words, no real setup from the factory. We shall see.
(Anyone have one and replaced the tuners? If so which ones specifically?)

Can you play at home on the sofa without an amplifier? I would take it just to practice without connecting anything, but I don't know if the acoustic volume at least makes me understand which note I'm playing. In addition, the noise of the roundwounds could be even louder than the notes played, it is mandatory to put the flatwounds. I didn't want to buy a pure acoustic, too bulky, plus this I could also use it live, obviously amplified.
