The trailer makes this pretty obvious by centering around a clumsy, nerdish (yet conventionally pretty -- duh) female protagonist who seems to have been born into a culturally rich, relatively privileged, and large joint family and is trying to find her place and meaning in her family and community, which she obviously does, by living by her own rules, despite the familial pressures. (I haven't watched the movie and I don't plan to; I'm simply speculating). Disney uses hackneyed tropes because it caters to the masses who like to think they're intelligent, and this includes an audience of color increasingly from the global south, the audience that the American entertainment corporation is currently milking for its profits.

She is the glue of the family figuratively or literary as in she gives them power, so maybe something happens and now the other family members must learn to be normal like human and work together. 3. As a Colombian myself, I feel so proud to see a movie made about my culture. Sadly, most Colombian directors only make movies and TV series focused on the sad and shameful part of our history. Not on our beautiful and family oriented culture. Can't wait to see it!!

I didn't see us represented in the movie "in the heights" when they were mentioning countries (it's ok, they were so many countries to go over), and over the years, movies and tv shows about Colombians have always been about gangs and drugs. I'm so excited to see this, and It doesn't even matter that It's for kids. Seeing my country represented with so many colors and this beautiful animation is making me goofy smile.

Whether or not you predicted that this movie will be about love, family, and Mirabel being accepted with or without a gift, I don't think ANYONE pedicted that this movie will include generational trauma and songs that serve as free therapy. Damn, Disney is having a HUGE year w cultural representation in their movies. First, Raya and the Last Dragon with the Southeast Asian cultures, and now Encanto w Colombia! As someone from Southeast Asian descent, Raya made me so proud to be represented on screen, and the movie was amazing. I hope this movie is just as good and gives Colombians the recognition they deserve.

These movies were Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, Jungle Cruise, Cruella, and Ron’s gone wrong. Two of these movies are based off of 2 different cultures that don’t really get a lot of screen time. The fact that 1/3 of the movies that Disney released was based off of minorities at all was a huge deal, and they did such a good job doing it. What is special about this movie is that you expect (from the trailer and summary) that it is about a girl who learns she is special without a gift. While that’s part of it it is more about how those with gifts are actually just like everyone else-they get overwhelmed by the expectations people have of them due to their gifts and as Luisa puts it “sometimes I cry”. I didn’t expect that layer of the story but it is amazing!
I love how the comments predicted that it’s about being special despite not having these gifts, when in actuality the main resolution and overall moral wasnt about Mirabel’s gift or no gift. Guesses were half right at best.
We can all agree that this is how you make a trailer, right? It gives us the plot and introduces us to some characters, but doesn't have the whole entire movie inside the trailer.

I would watch that movie. If Lin Manuel Miranda decided to write the music for it, then it must be worth the time. After all, he wrote the musical of _'In The Heights'_ , _'Hamilton'_ and starred in _'Vivo'_ . Great masterpieces.

As someone who lives in colombia, and has a Colombian family, it makes me happy that they chose this country, because there are so many interesting latin American countries
Maybe the main girl will be a jack-of-all-trades sort. Like, not perfect at any one thing like her siblings but average at everything! Or perhaps her 'special thing' would be making OTHERS feel special and good about themselves, while at the same time making herself feel that way once she realizes what her being around people does for them.
In 1:08 you can see a tree with the little boy. I think this is his magical room to practice his powers. Since the house creates a room for every person who has powers so that they can practice. If they don't have powers they stay in a nursery. I thought that the rooms could be just a large place but looking at that scene it makes me believe that this place is where that little boy will practice his magic...until the magic starts fading cause of plot lol

These movies were Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, Jungle Cruise, Cruella, and Ron’s gone wrong. Two of these movies are based off of 2 different cultures that don’t really get a lot of screen time. The fact that 1/3 of the movies that Disney released was based off of minorities at all was a huge deal, and they did such a good job doing it. What is special about this movie is that you expect (from the trailer and summary) that it is about a girl who learns she is special without a gift. While that’s part of it it is more about how those with gifts are actually just like everyone else-they get overwhelmed by the expectations people have of them due to their gifts and as Luisa puts it “sometimes I cry”. I didn’t expect that layer of the story but it is amazing!

I would watch that movie. If Lin Manuel Miranda decided to write the music for it, then it must be worth the time. After all, he wrote the musical of _'In The Heights'_ , _'Hamilton'_ and starred in _'Vivo'_ . Great masterpieces.

In 1:08 you can see a tree with the little boy. I think this is his magical room to practice his powers. Since the house creates a room for every person who has powers so that they can practice. If they don't have powers they stay in a nursery. I thought that the rooms could be just a large place but looking at that scene it makes me believe that this place is where that little boy will practice his magic...until the magic starts fading cause of plot lol

Tbh i feel like the movie has a predictable setup to her eventually having a gift after all. A part of me is hoping they dont go with that route solely because I'd like to see how they would find ways for her to be special without it.
Despite that, the movie looks really pretty. I'm actually excited for it :D
I actually think they'll go the "it's okay not to be gifted" type of route.... At least I hope.

They already made something like this. It was a live action Disney channel movie about a superhero school I can't remember the name
Finally Disney changes it's view towards protagonist that heroine should be slimmer, faired, sharp features and without any glasses. Otherwise they show only extraordinary beautiful girls. They should show some kind of normal or not extraordinary people as well so people don't get into body shaming

Is she the first disney female lead to wear glasses? I don't recall any other disney lead other than Milo and Kida tried his glasses on for a total of 5 seconds.

@@JustAnotherPerson4U My daughter has been waiting for a Disney main character who wears glasses (like her & several of her friends). And she just got her wavy hair cut in a bob! This is great as long as Disney can avoid the pitfall of stereotyping this character as the "smart, dorky nerd".
And I sure hope she won't go through a transition where she'll transform and end up looking like whatever standard of beauty Disney have.
