Born n raised NY, Lived in the south over 20 yrs. When we implants contribute to expansions like freeways and such and increased cost of living, we start to take away the essence of what makes the region so loveable to begin with. I remember back in 2000s, when Austinites were in an uproar over the massive changes, and I didn't fully understand until now. I think NY, LA etc should stay as is including the people, and let places like Wilmington etc, retain it's authenticity. When we turn these places into metro areas, then what's left? Why are folks leaving bigger cities for smaller ones then turning them into where they left from? Makes no sense.

I used to take day trips to Wrightsville ‘back in the day’, but now I’ll just hit up a lake closer to home (Raleigh). My grandparents used to take me and my sister to Topsail when we were kids in the mid 90’s. Back then on the beach you could look both ways down the coast and see like 3 umbrellas. 😂. My family and I love the winters here. The temperature stays in the 60's (most of the winter) and the traffic that is a pain during summer time is gone. We have a 2 year old and have never not had something to do in the winter. Visit the beach. Go for a walk in one of the many parks. Go fishing or visit a pier. Visit the aquarium or fort fisher. Go for a walk downtown and grab some food at one of the many amazing local restaurants. Go for a walk at the beach and grab some drinks and listen to live music. The list go's on and on. The winter is amazing in Wilmington. You must have lost touch with why you want to live in a coastal town in the first place.

I suppose everyones opinion is based off of their current and past experiences. I have always lived in a coastal city, and was born and raised in San Diego. I've lived here both from 2004-'07 and currently. Biggest negatives to me are everything is way spread out and roads get very bottle necked. Very rarely do you ever get a week of sunny clear skies during the hottest months here. Thirdly, the southern culture and small town charm here have all but disappeared. I think you'll only love living here if you're a college kid who's going to live on the beach with other college kids or if you're over 60, drive a Buick SUV and sometimes like wearing a sweater around your neck or are a Trader Joe's hipster who prefers the beaches over the mountains. I think that's about it. I really miss the working class feel Wilmington used to have so many years ago, that's for sure.

    1. Wilmington DOES NOT recycle. People have proven its a myth and that whatever is collected is not recycled. I'm researching to find the proof. Two people have confirmed this to me.
    2. We have an awesome 4th Friday Gallery Crawl, Theaters such as Thalian Hall, Film Festivals, live Comedy, Wilson Center and other places with great things to do indoors, trampoline places, Escape rooms, live music and even a board game hang out as well as many other indoor activities for when it's too cold, too hot, etc. There's plenty to do here without cold weather sports. I think you should edit this or do a new video tomorrow specifically say cold weather sports are limited. Winter things to do ARE NOT limited. You may want to expand your knowledge of all the options. Many creative people get together for their own interests. There are lots of groups for hobbies and interests locally, including a cosplay group.

@@llamamama7243 Well, my man toured thd facility and said they do recycle. Anyone can request a tour. I believe some companies maybe aren't honest or they take it all to a separate location to separate it before taking it to the Recycle facility. Plus, a LOT of people are putting things in bins that are not accepted or aren't recyclable. So the companies have to separate what they pick up and take the rest to the dump. That could be why some people see those trucks at the dump. I'm not defending any individuals. I'm suggesting all possibilities should be considered instead of people jumping to conclusions about what they see without getting facts from the companies and their drivers who might be doing things right. We really don't know until we ask the pick up companies and tour the facility.

The atmosphere of Myrtle is not what we aspire to here. We do not want "Developed "beaches or tourism like Myrtle. In fact what attracted Most people to this area WAS having pristine and undeveloped spaces and thusly places to enjoy ourselves. Those are slowly being eroded by the importation of the mentality you exhibit. What a lot of folks forget is, We live here, having places free of the ignorance that tourism brings, is priceless to us.. There’s no reason to lose power. You can get a solar pack, and use 12v everything from the marine store. You should have plenty of water or a way to clean water. Store the empty container in the attics and have a hand pump or windmill that you can erect after the storm. Pickled, fermented, canned (fresh) food and you don’t even need refrigerator. Almond milk, tofu, and tempeh don’t go bad soon. Adjust now, nothing changes for me if the electric goes out, summer or winter. City people take notice.

That was a big issue about 4 years ago in Wilmington and there was a multi million dollar clean up forced by EPA. The fact is GenX is in almost all our water supplies in the US..EPA allows a certain amount & Wilmington area is below that #. Also most of the local public water systems are in the process of installing reverse osmosis systems including Wilmington and Leland.
Most potable water in the United States has a pretty high amount of pollutants in my opinion. I would recommend most people have filtered water delivered or install a reverse osmosis system in their home regardless of where they live.

You don't need freeways here, you can get from any point to any point in Wilmington in less than 45 minutes, even when traffic is heavy.
280 days a years are bellow 85 degrees. It gets below freezing maybe 45 daus out of the year.Wilmington is the best place in the world for now. Especially 25 years ago before it started getting crowded. Every year it gets a little more crowded.
You should have seen it 30 years ago when it was almost all pine trees. Not all these stores we don't need and all the new town houses, apartments, and fancy houses everywhere. Plus there was very little traffic and stop lights
I can't blame people for moving here, I'd do it if I were them.

The separation of ethnographic groups is pretty strong here. The groups are:
1). descendants of british ppl w/ old, long money & other kindof professional, upright british-decending or otherwise well to do ppl. Middle to uppermiddleclass ppl who look the part can kind of wiggle into this group & get thrown some scraps or extract enough nutrients from this group to live a good life. They can get some sick connections through this group that will really boost the quality of their life. OP is in this category. The show Southern Charm is exactly type 1. This is the group to be in.
2). service industry consisting of tons of irish-descending ppl & several other cultures that aren’t as established or professional as type 1. If you’re in this group I think life is gonna be hard for you, but you can make many friends & some thrive. Money’s just always gonna be kinda tight.
3). UNCW students. mostly isolated to themselves. A mix of a type 1 & type 3 is truly the best experience.

I lived in Wilmington from 90-92 and absolutely loved it, so much so that I still refer to it as “my adopted home town”. It has built up a lot since then so yes traffic is a big problem. I live about 90 miles inland now so not too far for a visit. I didn’t even mind an occasional hurricane. We called it “the price you pay for living in paradise, But I’d like to take issue with you saying there’s nothing to do in the off-season, They we’re squashed by Covid but I like to think they’ll come back. That’s Riverfest in October and the Azalea Festival in the sping. Then there’s the holiday lighted flotillas in Carolina and Wrightsville Beach and it just a short drive to the festivities in Holly Ridge. My sister used to live in Southport, and they celebrated July 4th all week long. And a relatively short drive to Myrtle Beach and all it has to offer also. My 2 biggest complaints about Wilmington was not a good place for snow lovers(except for 1989), and no good strip clubs(Pure Gold doesn’t count because they were awful) , but there’s always Myrtle Beach as mentioned before or Jacksonville in the other direction or even Snead’s Ferry to get off the beaten path.

The music scene here is better than advertised. The creative community here is strong and collaborative. The local musicians generally get paid well from small size shows at breweries, restaurants, bars, markets, etc. There are also occasional opportunities to open for touring acts at the larger venues. What is really missing is the midsize venues here, and a lot of folks here are invested in building towards having those again like there was in the past.
