This video is an update to our earlier video where we shared the unfortunate news about the problem we were having with the Triton V10 engine in our Winnebago motorhome.
We had so many people reach out offering help, support and suggestions after we discovered the engine in our motorhome developed a knock. Ultimately, we took it to The Engine Builders, which is an engine specialty shop in Glendale, Arizona. It took about 5 minutes for Dave to diagnose the the problem. Dave's diagnosis was a failed piston due to overheating which was most likely caused by a faulty fuel injector on cylinder #7. The knocking sound heard in the first video was indeed the piston skirt slapping the cylinder wall! Though not a catastrophic failure, it certainly could have lead to serious problems if not corrected so we took Dave's advise and had them rebuild the engine. It took just four days for them to disassemble the front of the coach, remove and rebuild the engine, then reassemble the front of the coach! Not that is service!
A special THANK YOU to Greg, Kym, Dave & Freddy for doing such a great job getting our home back on the road!
Check our The Engine Builders website at www.theenginebuilders.com!
We are Brian and Shawnna, a full time RV couple who enjoy the RV lifestyle. We are empty nesters who recently quit our corporate jobs, sold our home and auctioned off just about everything we own to live a simpler, more purposeful life in our RV. As Full Time RVers, our goal is to experience life and make awesome RV lifestyle videos for our community. We decided to "retire" from life as we knew it so we traded our stuff for experiences. We travel in a 2008 Winnebago Motorhome (RV) with a preference for RV boondocking. We vlog, blog and update social media with our RV travel experiences, advice and challenges with a goal of helping other RVers along the way - find beautiful places to stay and save money by seeking out low cost campgrounds and awesome boondocking sites. The RV life is a great life, but it's not without its challenges. We plan to share those with you and offer advice along the way.

Thank you for showing all the pictures of the breakdown and re-build. Fascinating stuff for us pilot chair motor heads! Kudos to the shop knowing they could remove the engine out the front of the rig by dis-assembling it. I think that's something your previous repair shops had no idea could be done. BTW- based on your reviews on the Letric e-bikes, we purchased 2 and had them delivered to the dealership in Mesa that is preparing our 5ver. We pick up Jan 6th - see you on the road!

Hello Brian. Wanted to share with you something we had in common. I work for FedEx, self-employed. So my step van for delivering packages which is just like a ups truck, had engine issues. We buy lots of FedEx trucks with Ford engine in them. It was like you said, very frustrating that they could not work on them because of its size and it been a commercial vehicle. OMG I was so frustrated with them. My attitude was if your going to sell these Ford engines in our FedEx truck and Rv's and not provide services, then get out of the business. LOL I had like yourself had to take my truck to a trucking company. Which to me is very funny, because they had the
equipment to work on them but had to go to Ford to get the parts. Talk about been _______ fill in the blank. Enjoy your travels and thank you for your honesty. It's greatly appreciated. You are ahead of my wife and I for now. But we are going to follow in your foot steps one day soon. I might even caravan with my daughter. She loves the idea. Talk to you soon. And a big Thank you for responding back. I was impress by that

WOW, I just watched the 1st Video on engine breakdown, I left A 5* Rating So Informative , recommended not just for Rv’s . But I’m shopping and want to try to find the best Videos, that I can Walk along with So if / when this happens . My self looking at a very nice Jayco with the 2007 V10. 305. In a Ford 450 body 31.000 miles . I heard from the beginning get the RV Inspected , yes it will cost . Maybe up to $500.00 . I’ve already had one sold used dealer saying inspection? As if to say are’s go to fast for that I will go back to see their TRACK RECORD ! I’m retired disabled Vet So I don’t want the BIG SURPRISE , at lest not lied to , broke down ,when in fact the Dealer Knew something was Wrong . This is Part #2 it is another 5* VIDEO. Full of information and advice . Pictures of the rebuild and How People should get a Warranty. Very Smart hope you enjoy as I have . Happy Trials GOD Bless.

Nice vid... Now, detail that rig and sell it, you can get all that cost back and then some. The V10s are nothing but trouble on pulling heavy loads. Too many moving parts creates too much heat in small areas of the engine that lacks proper cooling even though the cumulative engine temp reads normal. To avoid more heat related problems change oil and filters every 3000 miles. Oil is cheap, overhauls are exp. diy is less than $500 for every 100,000 miles.

They rebuild the Ford V10 6.8 engine all the time.
Every single time they rebuild a Triton 6.8. V10 it’s always the same expression, “why’d anyone want to to rebuild a engine with a reputation like that one”
Is the answer my friends, that actually a V10 engine still blows us away, with two extra cylinder and better gasoline mileage than a square body Chevy, Ford, Dodge.
      Few would really care.
Truth is that they got a Triton V10 in a lot of vehicles that are already on a list of vehicles that would naturally always have an engine replacement.
      Which makes sense?
Or is it because emissions laws prevent an upgrade to a more excepted engine.

I highly recommend having an injector cleaning performed. It’s less than $100 and if one of the injectors failed like that, another could be right behind it. I’m a Mercedes master tech and we used to share a shop with a Ford dealer. We used the Ford chemicals to do injector cleanings on Mercedes. Very good stuff. It always made a noticeable difference on cars that had some age or mileage on them.

Steve St. martin It is definitely not something you can do yourself. Adding it to the tank would not really accomplish anything. It is run at 100% solution directly into the fuel rail. You can very likely find an independent auto repair shop that can do it for you. Especially shops that sell BG or Wynns products.

That was a great price. You are right. Could happen to any manufacturer. Especially in this case as they often share injectors. From seeing Picts I’d agree that was the problem. Way too much fuel in there. Washed away all the oil. Lack of oil caused the piston to overheat.
Glad you are back on the road.

Saw your other vid and came here to see results. Good to hear you didnt get taken. I am very fluent in these v10s after the first one i had sounded lile it had an upper end valve issue. I took it to the dealer and was told it needed an engine, 10k and i said no way. Took it home and started looking around, noticed the back lower exhaust manifold bolt broke off. It is very common on ford and gm engines. Replaced the bolt and manifold gasket for under $50. It was obvious to me the dealer never looked at the engine. Fyi yes it also caused several codes that mimicked a lower rod knock or head valve train issue. But simple visual inspection and a mechanics stethoscope found the culprit in under 15 minutes. These v10s will go 300k no issue and most place dont diagnose them properly.

Light load there is not as much problem. He said to run an injection cleaner ( professional system) and to get coil packs checked as they detriate ( or better yet just replace all at same time) . All vehicle brands have issues. When I was young my dad told me "Chevy makes a Corvette and a Chevette and that shows the range of 'quality' one maker has." There are some brand new Corvettes that are junk off the lot and some basic low end cars that never have a single problem. These are all things that wear down over time and at different rates based on how people drive them so people complaining about one over the other are all hot air. No sense in complaining about the maker when you really only have reference to YOUR VEHICLE and YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH IT. Glad you got it all fixed.
