you cannot even imagine how epic this hike is for most of us who haven't been there...truly mesmerizing...thanks a ton and keep bringing us more such epic stuff!!
Thank you for sharing all the knowledge of backpacking. Never backpacked before . I love the views, honest expression of your partner. Summit soaking up the view after long day was priceless!
I remembering about two years ago I watched this video, after my friends brother got back from a trip to Colorado. I just remember wanting to in the mountains so bad. Looking back your video helped motivated me to get a couple trips in to Colorado
Trekking poles, knee braces, and a good pair of shoes are your friend when you have knee issues. Training ahead of the trip with copious amounts of squats, bicycling, and core training also goes well towards injury prevention. I'm in my 40's now, so I am learning new limits to what I can/can't do- my mind says I am 25, but my body..well...haha. I'm not old, but some days....
This video was actually super helpful because I've never been good at optimizing my bag, and until recently I had never had a job that would allow me the free time in the summer to do a trip like this. I have been slowly easing from hiking mountains on weekend day trips, to going on long adventure type hiking trips!
Great video. Love the Mora and I use coffee filters to pre filter my water. Use a rubber band to secure the coffee filter to clean out all of the particles before purification. I don't like to drink grit.
You should check out a backpacking quilt. I was always a sleeping bag guy, until I got the quilt. I'll never go back. Also, you can get a down one, that compresses down smaller than a jetboil. Just an alternative to research. I never knew of them, but now, I'm a convert.
Some of my best times were doing the same, right down to the doggy saddlebags, in the Sangre de Cristo range. Dry Lakes trail is amazing. I first climbed it in 1976. I would love to do it today but not sure about my knees. Don't get old.
keep it up guys! this video should definitely be shown to anyone. my girlfriend saw this and im happy to say she has "woken up" :) happy trails we love the couple side.
lol why hasn't anyone come out with that UV Steripen until now? Absolutely ingenious! Awww at 5:17... I can tell that was quite a good hike just by that moment, Puppy and Woman chillin':))) Shutting up for the rest and thank you for taking us along :)
Bro - I've done that one before. What a beautiful place Eagles Next Wilderness. It is the only place recently that has left me humbled and just in joy at this life.
Awesome video and adventure you had. My brother and I just went on an overnight trip in Southern Ohio at Zaleski State Forest (we are from Northern Ohio). We had a great time, but I really could have used trekking poles (on my wish list). I think we were the only ones there without them. We were both carrying 40+ lbs. and I was really feeling. I am 46 yrs. old and haven't done much hiking. It was certainly a learning experience. Thanks for sharing your trip with us. - Jeremy
Yes, Trekking poles are a must, when I started my thru hike I laughed at people that had them. I then spent 2 and a half days laid up in a shelter with sore knees not being able to hike. I quickly acquired a pair soon after. Also, you probably saw you did not need everything in that 40+ backpack, take note of that and keep wiiddling down that weight.
That doesn't look like the same Lost Lake that my husband and I hiked. Go to Buena Vista and drive up Cottonwood Pass, almost to the top but not quite. There is a spot to pull off the road. I don't think the trail is marked but you will see it. you have to step up onto the path. Just an fyi, the first water you come to is not Lost Lake. Lol. It's a very easy, fun hike. Just a little slice of Heaven we found. --- I really enjoy watching your channel. Y'all stay safe out there!
+Mea Woodsman There are plenty of "seasoned" hikers that we meet on the Appalachian Trail, stop wishing and do what your ability allows...perhaps canoeing is a better option?
Thanks for upload. Going on my first ever "solo" backpacking , camping trip in Superior Forest Northern Minnesota next month for 10 days, your tips were super helpful. My wife, son and myself, were lost in this same wilderness for 10 days, 4 years ago, before being rescued....so always needed to go back and conquer it alone.
Thank you both for this awesome video at one time this is all my children and I could dream of on weekends or vacations beautiful nature at its best and in all its glory fall is hevean on earth my favorite time of year
Good information on pack loading, etc., for younger dudes and duddetts. It's great information for beginning backpackers. When I was younger, I could haul those monster pacts all day. Not any more. At 66, to still keep backpacking, I've trimmed my base weight down to 22-25 #s depending on the season. As equipment has improved and gotten lighter, I've learned I can survive very comfortably on a lot less than I use to carry in my old external frame Jansport pack.
Love the Ster-Pen,have used mine for about 2 yrs now and haven't got sick once, I wouldn't drink sewer water with it, but it's great for the Rocky Mtns. Great video, just subscribed and I'll be watching more of your videos!!!
+Bob Sticco Thanks, for the comment. I have run into a few problems with the steri-pen. In Ladakh India the water was so cold I kept getting a sad face, I figured the batteries were too cold so I warmed them up but that did not fix the problem. Upon reading the manual I learned that it won't work on water that is close to freezing temps...the manual also says "don't stick up or in any bodily orifices" Which makes me wonder, were people trying to treat giardia with it? So yes it is great but not for winter camping. Another tip for others...always use lithium batteries or you won't get many uses out of it....they are also lighter.
+GuideYouOutdoors At 67yrs old my days of winter are a foggy memory, but I also use a sawyer mini for certain hikes. Being in NY, you almost have to filter your tap water. Thanks for the information though, cause according to my orthopedic surgeon, I still have a 22 yr old brain!!! Who knows you might find me in a tent some day in the month of January, in the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mtns.
Awesome video,,beautiful scenery with incredible wildlife...I'm familiar withe that area ,,it's some of my favorite trail systems..used to backpack more in the 70's-80's,,generally always 65-70lb .pack..when multi-day camp/hiking ,,unsupported,,you just have to take full supplies needed, plus a day or 2 extra,,never know when plans change along the way...plan on being well supplied and extended times are usually no problem...day hikes or supported hikes are completely different,,even then ,,be prepared for the unexpected,,
Hey! thats my neck of the woods! I've packed and horseback many of those trails and woods. Great vid. although i'd try to drop some weight. Nicer on the knees you know. It's the down hill that always gets the knees. Good luck on further adventures.
Like the wraps! Somehow never thought of it before. We tend to make sammies in the car on a roadtrip but it can get messy. Wraps are a perfect solution!
One of the best hiking videos I’ve watched so far and I’ve watched mountains of them.lol. Only one thing I would wish for that is to see much more scenery. Being disabled and old I can’t walk out in the forests any longer. I still try though. Blessings.
lindajackson618 hey! I believe you can still go to forests/mountains and hike even if you are old and weak , start slow and walk for couple miles everyday and soon you’ll be climbing the Himalayas. Don’t lose hope and do what you love
A word on trekking poles... on wide clear trails I love them... but while bowhunting I was on an old road that grass/weeds grew up to 2 ft. and the poles would catch the grass on every step... I finally had to put the in my pack...
Thank you for posting the fantastic video. It was gorgeous and very informative. When you were filtering your water, you were worried about getting some drops of unfiltered water on the threads of your water bottle. I hear this all the time. But if you think about it and use some common sense, if you got sick from a few drops of water on the threads your water bottle, you would never be able to swim in any body of water anywhere. Just think about that. You have to ingest enough micro organisms to overwhelm your body’s defenses. That’s when you get sick. God bless you both. John
That is one HUGE pack! I noticed you've not trimmed the pack itself to reduce weight, cut off extra straps, etc. My base weight is 9.8 lbs, but I'm kind of a light-weight geek. Have you considered giving a little more thought to UL? It utterly transforms the backpacking experience to have only 15 or 20 lbs on your back, including food and water. More if you have a longer trip between resupplies. That said, I am enjoying your videos very much! Thank you!!

Hiking with your love one and your dog... this is heaven for me.
Hiking with your love one and your wife.... fixed it for ya
Dog farts in a tent .....
.... at least you can blame the dog.
Dogs are nasty animals
you cannot even imagine how epic this hike is for most of us who haven't been there...truly mesmerizing...thanks a ton and keep bringing us more such epic stuff!!
I loooooove the feeling when you take your backpack off and feel like your going to float away
A good friend/your lady, your good dog, and Colorado! Heaven!

Thank you for posting this video. It temporarily took me away from thoughts of trekking to work today!
Beautiful scenery. Looks like a great place to hike. Great video.

Absolutely magnificent scenery. Well done.
Thanks for sharing.
Paul.
I never thought of putting a rock in a bag for that reason. How cool. Great video!
+Chasing the North Work smarter not harder.
Thanks for the great upload. The Gore Range was my playground back in the 1980s when I was ski bumming at Steamboat. Keep on hiking!
love that landscape looking forward on my solo backpacking. thanks for the tips
New to backpacking and I love your videos. Very helpful and encouraging and motivating. And I love your dog. Please keep it up.
Brilliant idea on where to put the DSLR case! Sternum strap...so much easier to get to.
Thank you for the pleasant hiking and good information. Well-produced video, very relaxing. Dogs make everything better!
Great video. Love the Mora and I use coffee filters to pre filter my water. Use a rubber band to secure the coffee filter to clean out all of the particles before purification. I don't like to drink grit.
Beautiful dog. And she/he is very aware of their surroundings.
I never though that setting up a bear bag would be so difficult… Thanx for posting.
The video was well-done. Beautiful photography. Good luck in your explorations.
ohmygosh, I recognized that lake at the beginning as soon as I saw it. Beautiful place to hike!
This is glorious, thank you. Made me more confident to try my first multiday hike! Lovely stuff.
This is great! Hugely appreciate the tips for someone getting ready for their first backpacking trip this summer. Thanks a ton!
How was it
watched it all! Love hiking & hiking videos awesome vid

Yes, I have already started whittling down. Do you have any specific trekking poles to recommend, or anything to look for in trekking poles? Thanks!

Yes and wraps last weeks without molding.
Awesome Video Buddy!! Let us entertain and educate with more videos! Thank you!
There's another Lost Lake about 17 miles away from Crested Butte, up Kebler Pass. It's absolutely gorgeous. One of my favorite places.
+Wowee2012 Thanks for the heads up we loved Crested Butte. Best ice cream store there.
You just earned another sub! :) This video was very well done, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Thank you!
Finally someone talking about something other than going light
They are carrying too much stuff actually.
nice informative video- great scenery.
Nice tip about feeling the hot spots. Never thought about using medical tape.
Love your vid!....reminds me of my AT trip earlier this year. Thank you, was nostalgic 😉
Nice landscape.... just wow

Great video, Colorado is truly a beautiful state. I live in the south-central part of Colorado. I would love to go see that area you were in. Peace.
Did the whole video on the tread mill. Thank you for sharing
Seriously enjoying your videos. Very well done and love the information.

Good job with the sound and video quality.

you guys are so lucky, it is so beautiful there, I love to see when summer come in 2017, thank you guys, love it.
This was such an informative video, the smallest things like how to put on your pack!
nice video. wish I live on the west coast got some great views. Good tip about your dog on a lease. Thanks for the tips...
beatiful wildernes!
I love the leash idea with the double bowline and a carabiner def a lot stronger then any other leash out there
Great video. Thanks, i got a few tips from this video!
A word on trekking poles... on wide clear trails I love them... but while bowhunting I was on an old road that grass/weeds grew up to 2 ft. and the poles would catch the grass on every step... I finally had to put the in my pack...
That's awesome that you take your dog with you!
There's no where more beautiful than Colorado, especially for camping or hiking
Thank you for posting the fantastic video. It was gorgeous and very informative. When you were filtering your water, you were worried about getting some drops of unfiltered water on the threads of your water bottle. I hear this all the time. exactly ... hike your hike man!
Everyone is so concerned about everyone else’s weight.. it’s the internet age! This would not have been so controversial 15 years ago. I done Kokoda with a 22kg pack, hardest physical thing I have ever endured. I loved it! Loved the pain!

Good stuff guys! Makes me want to get out.
Great intro....I mean it's the first I've come across your videos and took to it straight away. Love the way your dog follows you up the tree. A real character! Thanks for the positive feedback. We are headed out on a 2 week canoe trip next week and are planning a whole section on backpacking food.
GuideYouOutdoors Sounds good. What river are you canoeing? I suspect your all prepped. ATB Mark.
The Dumoine river in Quebec.
GuideYouOutdoors Just checked it out. It's a short little river but looks mighty fine flowing there through the forest valley. Peace and all the best. Mark.
Great video and very helpful.
Excellent video.
Many thanks for sharing it with us.
amazing video...this is brilliance
Well done guys. Nice video.
