    Eve, Roman Szmal should hire you to do their product swatches as your swatches are amazing! Their product swatches don't seem to really show the true paint colour. I really enjoyed this video. 🧡💛💚

      I'm up for the job, if they are watching! ;)

      I agree Eve.... watching the paint flow onto the paper.... no matter the color is sooooooo soothing! Thanks for the video.... this batch of new colors seems like it was Roman’s orange phase.... my favorite color!!!

  • @FaerieDust

    I really appreciate that you show your scans vs the product images! I wish they had dot cards, or at least painted color charts - between the quirks of the product images and the differences in monitor color calibrations it can be pretty much impossible to know what you're buying, and I much prefer just buying a chart so I can see what the paints actually look like...

    • @FaerieDust
      @FaerieDust 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I really like a lot of the new shades - I'm quite in love with Indian red right now, and that lapis lazuli actually looks like it'd be a great color when painting "white" stuff, like a snowy landscape. I want a ton of these paints tbh 😂

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree that to be able to get painted charts would be a blessing. Some brands offer it (Holbein, Turner), but definitely not all of them. There's really nothing like seeing a color "in person".

    • @FaerieDust
      @FaerieDust 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@EveBolt Dot cards are the very best imo, since we can try the paint on our preferred paper that way, but even just a painted chart on random paper is so extremely useful!

      I hope they get to you fast!! The blue ochre is a good example of the difficult decision to make between getting it and being out of pocket, or not getting it but missing the color. Thank you for your comprehensive review! I’m planning to pick up a few of these in Jackson’s sale. Do you have a recommendation for a plastic palette that would hold these paints? I’ve heard the White Nights palettes fit too snuggly for these pans. Bummer! Wish RS would offer an empty palette for purchase.

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no solution, sadly. It's something that annoys me, too. Arleebean has been able to put the Roman Szmal pans in the plastic White Nights palette, after using a Dremmel to sand off the little bumps in the tray.
      For my pans, I used two-sided tape (or blue tack) and just glued then in a palette where they would fit. (This one, in the middle area : bit.ly/3g5GqB2)

    I love how you formatted this swatching review! So nice, and so many pretty colors! So as long as you know that going in, paint to your heart’s content!

    • @EveBolt
      @EveBolt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! :D
      Are they? The info I have seen says that 3/5 have excellent lightfastness, and the other two can be affected by acids or other pigments. I haven't seen any info saying these are not lightfast, where did you see that?

    • @rhondita95
      @rhondita95 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EveBolt check out Kimberly Crick Art’s Roman Szmal review of these paints on her channel from Oct and she goes into detail. To be fair, some pigments are more unstable than than fugitive and some are lightfast but not when diluted- as you would do with watercolor, etc. Each has its own idiosyncrasy 😜. That’s why Daniel Smith discontinued Malachite, it had instability issues. Anyway, her info is enlightening- and I’ve seen info one other place but can’t remember where that elaborated on some and confirmed the rest. The colors are beautiful, and as long as you know going in what you’re dealing with, if it’s just for a card or something or an illustration that you’re going to scan - then Go for it. If it’s for something you want to keep long term, the. Maybe use a different pigment. I think Goethite is the only one of that last bunch that is benign. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

    I love these, but they stay sticky forever and don't fit into any of my other palettes (guess I could buy them their own).

      They don't fit in your other palettes? Do you have special palettes?

      @@EveBolt I have the Cornelissen’s whiskey palette with the built-in flask, an old winsor newton enamelled palette from ebay and a wooden palette from Quackplume on Etsy.

    Super informative. Thank you so much for this review... I feel like my soul needs to go back to watercolours. I still have a set of 12 White Nights from 2009! (the consistency looks very fresh after all these years), and I got a lovely set of Schminke for my birthday this year... No excuses. I need to first use what I have but RS is on my list. The quality looks excellent and the price seems reasonable. Oh, and thank you for pronouncing his last name correctly xD... Whenever I hear Roman "Small" I think: "pretty sure he's a big guy"... xD

    I'd like to buy the set with this simply plastic box, but I can't find it. Do you have a link? Thank you

      I don't have a link, sorry. As far as I know, the plastic tray is mostly a promotional item for sending out pans to artists and reviewers. It's a rather flimsy tray, too. I love it and I'd use a sturdier version, for sure, but this one is rather fragile.

      @@EveBolt What a pity! I have 500 watercolours pans and tubes. They should be a perfect solution! In Poland they’re available but not for international shipping

    Is it worth it to get pyrrol scarlet if u already have pyrrol orange and pyrrol red? Also do you like the Roman szmal Indian red? And what ochre would you pick out of the line?
    Edit: Also completely forgot to thank you for the lovely review as usual:))

    • @EveBolt

      For pyrrol scarlet, have you tried mixing your orange and red to see if you get a color close to the scarlet? The Indian red is really nice, it's super strong. As for the ochre, do you mean from among the yellow ochre colors? I love the basic yellow ochre, the gold ochre looks nice too!
      Thanks! :)

      @@EveBolt thank you for replying so soon! I appreciate it very much as I am planning on making a order soon. I don’t have a pyrrol red yet to see what happens when mixed with pyrrol orange but will do as soon as I get it. I was also considering transparent yellow oxide and goethite for the yellow ochre colors? The only thing I am worried about is that the swatch cards on the Jackson website for those 2 colors look a bit similar even tho the pigments are completely different.

      @@kamalitarajagopalan2671 just FYI goethite is also known as brown ochre and is definitely a browner color I the DS range. I haven’t seen the Roman Szmal up close and personal but I would think it would definitely be browner than a yellow oxide or ochre

    They really don’t do justice to their own paints huh. Those product image pics don’t make them desirable at all😭😅
