These new WC stadiums are not nearly as good as Russia's for the last WC or Brazil 4 years before them. Turkey has built some and renovated some nice ones too. These Qatar ones are flashy and new looking but I suspect they will look dated and corny in a decade sort of like how the Big O in Montreal looked like a concrete dystopian communist nightmare 5 years after the Olympics in 1976. edit: the Lusail Stadium looks pretty decent, I shouldn't paint all the stadiums with the same brush as my comment above and the Khalifa Stadium as a unique design too. Those two are pretty good, the rest don't move me.

A Gulf States World Cup (UAE, Bahrain and Qatar) would have been a pretty cool idea. I've lost interest in the whole thing now at this point and likely won't watch any matches. Not just because of Qatar to be clear but the general politics and corruption involved in sport the last few years. Giving Qatar the WC is more a symptom of the politics and corruption and I don't intend to disrespect anybody from Qatar as I don't know much about their country to have an opinion either way. All the negatives about this world cup I just sort of tuned out and tried to get on with my life and be happy.
South Africa at least has some history in footballing terms. Whether or not it was run well is another matter. The amount of money used to grease the palms of Fifa officials from Qatar is obscene.
