  • The Colle system gives white a solid center and a slow developing, but dangerous, kingside attack. The games I used as examples are:
    Colle-O'Hanlon 1930 - www.chessgames....
    Koltanowski-NN 1954 - www.chessgames....
    Koltanowski-NN 1941 - www.chessgames....
    Colle-Capablanca 1929 - www.chessgames....

    From Wikipedia (chess openings):
    Richter-Veresov Attack (or Veresov Opening ECO D01) is a chess opening that begins with the moves: 1.d4 d5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3.Bg5
    After 3.Bg5, Black's most popular choices are 3...Nbd7, 3...e6, 3...Bf5, 3...c6, and 3...c5, all potentially leading to different variations.
    The Torre Attack is a chess opening characterized by the moves:
    1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 e6 3. Bg5 (ECO code A46)
    Hope this helps :-)

    You sir, are the Bob Ross of chess. Also, I think the proper pronunciation of colle is "covfefe".

      What are you talking about? Colle sounds like Covfefe???? Then I guess Justin Wright sounds like Justnot Wrong.

    I'd never heard of Koltanowski -- blindfolded AND simultaneous?! -- but found him at Wikipedia, which includes: "Koltanowski set the world's blindfold record on 20 September 1937, in Edinburgh, by playing 34 chess games simultaneously while blindfolded." Meanwhile, I struggle with open eyes and only one chessboard at a time. The human mind is amazing.

    I would be interested, in seeing when it is beneficial to play the Colle, Torre Attack, or Trompowski.

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a hard question!. First, it is white's choice to play those openings, so you have to have white. Second, sometimes it requires black's cooperation to play the opening, for example to get a Trompowski, you need black to play Nf6 after you play d4. Third, you might choose an opening for different reasons.
      By this I mean, you might choose to play the Colle because it suits your style, or because you think it will pose problems for your opponent. Or you might choose it because it's not your usual style, but you want to gain experience playing something different.
      To decide if an opening suits you or not, you can check out example games, especially master level games, in the opening. This will teach you typical ways to proceed and resulting positions. Then try to decide if you would be comfortable playing those positions. Do the moves seem natural to you? Or are they obscure and hard to understand?
      Lastly, there is nothing better than just trying out an opening by playing it to see if you like it. You should persist a bit, and ignore the first few losses. Learning a new opening often lands you in new situations and you need to gain some experience to really play them.

    Excellent lesson, thanks, and made me a subscriber. At 14:40, though, why does White capture the bishop, Rxd6? Why not Nxf7, forking the Black king, queen AND rook?! I'm a novice, and must be missing something obvious. Oh, a few seconds later, I see: if Black's queen had captured the rook, Black would then play Nxf7 and have the same triple fork ... but picking up a free bishop.

  • @Strategicforce
    @Strategicforce 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jim. At 7:23 i think you picked the wrong plan. Instead of b5?! Black needs to play e5! And have an active position from there. Reading colle system move by move and it said that in certain games. Also, in my experience with playing magnus 13 on android he played e5 against me.

    When I play the Colle set-up Black never responds e6 before playing Bg4. Are there any good games to look at to deal with this response?

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your question! In general, when black develops the queenside bishop before playing e6, it weakens black's queenside. White can often get some play against the center and queenside with moves like c4, Nc3, and Qb3. This does take you away from typical Colle ideas, however, often transposing to a Slav defense or a Queen's gambit line. Here's a game that features this setup: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1689481

    At 14:31, why not NxF7(dbl ch!) forking K and Q? Game is over.

  • @floridaman6982
    @floridaman6982 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why would you play the “triangle“ if hes already got c5? He can block your bishops development with c4. Also why not show one example if black plays g6 and Bg7?

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      1) If black plays c5 to c4 before white gets in Bd3, then white plays b3 to attack black's center and free his bishop. This is good for white. If black waits for Bd3 then hits it with c5 to c4, the bishop drops back to c2, staying on the diagonal towards black's kingside. Then white continues with his usual plan of e3 to e4, and black has taken some pressure off the center. So black doesn't usually play this way.
      2) g6/Bg7 is an interesting way for black to defend, sorry I didn't cover it.

    Isn’t the London system better since you can develop your dark square bishop?

    • @JimsChessChannel
      @JimsChessChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Developing the dark squared bishop is a key idea of the Colle system as well, it's development is just delayed. So neither system is better, it is just a matter of taste.

      Thanks Norman, I actually researched the pronunciation just for this video, and I couldn't find any definitive source. Are you from Belgium? Colle was born in Ghent, which is in the Flemish region of Belgium. Going by the Flemish pronunciation guide, you would be correct, except that the final syllable would be "uh" rather than "ay".
