I'm a beginner and I didn't know I shouldn't skate when it's wet outside... Arrghhhh
It's not that you SHOULDN'T skate when it's wet outside, it's that you should be conscious of maintaining your board and skate gear AFTER you skate in the wet.
Rusted bearings are always a bummer and rusted bolts can become impossible to remove. If your board is made of maple, make sure to dry it out instead of letting it sit all wet and humid to avoid warping/bending of the wood as well as separation of the maple plies.
I know this is incredibly late but
how do you completely dry out a maple board? Like but it in a bathtub and blowdry the crap out of it?
@@darchendon7926 Just dry the wood off with a towel and put it someplace warm. Compressed air works wonders for tight spaces. Odds are the residual moisture will dry off before it does any damage. if your bearings got submerged, pull them out and dry them separately.

I live in Washington where it rains alot, so I'm just taking extra care of my longboard
For a squeaky pivot cup, I just scrape some wax shavings off a candle and put them inside.
IMPROVISE. ADAPT. OVERCOME.
Graphite spray used to lube locks works really good

I went through 9 months of my youtube history today to find this video again because I found ryan sheckler action figure at the thrift store
Always clean them bearings, I forgot one time to maintain them and not only did they seize up, they built up so much friction and heat it LITERALLY exploded themselves and the wheel off of the axel
THIS. It can happen and it tends to creep up on you until its too late! If it sounds like your bearings have mice squeaking inside of them, its time to lube them up!
One time, a friend of our was riding such badly seized bearings, but was skating such an insanely steep hill, that from the heat the bearings were giving off from all the friction, THE BEARINGS MELTED THE CORE OF HIS WHEEL! He made it down the hill safely, but was wondering why he all of a sudden started getting speed wobbles lol
That's okay bro listen to this one I heard Ripsticks don't get speed wobbles at all so doing a little bit research and watching some little kids bomb some pretty good little Hill bombs on some pretty good Hills on youtube I decided then in there that since I I happen to have a RipStik from when I was younger and happen to live near a really long smooth Steep Hill that I was going to go 100% committed and just send it down that sumbitch well needless to say no they don't get speed wobbles But I built up so much speed three-quarters of the way down the hill that my rear wheel heated up to the point it melted extremely fast but in such a controlled way that I was able to ride it out after I got off I realized that by some grace of God the front wheel had begun to melt to but never letgo I guess not compared to the rear one only about half of it was gone.. It left one hell of a mark on the road and yeah it was scary as all hell but I live to tell the tale Ripsticks are good for Hills just not super big steep ones😁✌

The bulbs in those lights are extremely sensitive to any contaminates, including skin oils. Using clean gloves to replace bulbs will make them last longer.
I just started skateboarding longboard three months ago. I’ve been practicing everyday at night. I was worried about the noise coming from my longboard. I bought my board from Craigslist and I didn’t know this noise was coming from lack of the maintenance. I just ordered the tools for the maintenance. Thank you!!

Either that, or use a grater, shave some crayons, and put the crayon shavings inside the pivot cups. I used to use paraffin wax, but they don't carry it at the stores I go to anymore. And crayons are a close substitute for it
That last bit about the spacers was exactly what I needed, thank you, my wheels would never spin if I tighten the bearings and I had squeaky trucks (that I rarely noticed cause I wear headphones while I ride), but I finally serviced it this weekend like you guys just demoed and she feels much richer and smoother when she carves and cruises. The quiet trucks sound so unnatural to me yet so nice to know I won't be squeaking down the street.

Something that I use to clean my bearings is "Nature's Orange" degreaser cleaner, that stuff will get anything off and repair it and then I'll use the bones speed cream. Living in Akron, Ohio most of the streets are still covered in salt so I'm constantly cleaning my bearings until the salt is gone. And where is Taz and Justin?
try using break cleaner that stuff is the best hands down. but it will wreck plastics
I clean mines with a rust spray for wheels, doors and anything that is rusty
And I just used my longboard for the first today and it was wet 🤦♀️
Where's the second part for skiff's sake? There are plenty of topics tha my be explanied like the following:
-Wheelbite
-The little "crack" sound when turning side to side
-Changing and mantaining griptape

Tons of videos can be found on how to remove and reapply griptape, even loaded has a video on it
the cracking noises are caused by new bushings squishing and moving around in the bushing seat, break in your bushings and they shouldn't sound like that anymore. Also don't over tighten your trucks, that can cause the cracking sounds, or you'll destroy your bushings pretty quickly. I tighten my trucks until I can't spin the bushing around inside the seat. If you need more stability in your riding, opt for denser bushings, don't tighten the truck even more than you need to. I put an 87a bushing on the bottom, nearest the board, and put an 83a bushing ontop, that gives me the downhill stability I need, and I maintain the maneuverability I need
And about wheelbite, it can't be prevented, but it can be avoided. Don't ride any board without 1/16" shock pads, and always check for wheel bite when riding big wheels on loose trucks. Loaded has a setup matrix on their site that tells you if you need to change your bushings or put risers on the board to avoid wheelbite with the corresponding wheel you want to ride with.

Amazing video! It was very helpful for me as i bought my first board used and now i tightened screws and eliminated this weird truck sound. Riding is now much better and even before cleaning bearings :D

I just started investing in my new longboard ( First ever/Beginner) and im already feeling really educated and confident in maintaining it properly. Ive also only been riding for about a month, and my bearings are already dirty. Ive been riding alot downtown so i know its real dirty, and other parts that are needing of replacement

All great info, Thanks. After i clean and use bones speed cream on them I take a stick of chapstick and run it around the outside of my bearings it sort of waterproofs them.
I’m getting my first longboard on Monday, in 4 days. I can’t tell you how excited I am. I want to learn about the maintenance of my board since it was over 300$ lol but I can’t be bothered right now, I’m too excited to ride. Will definitely be back in two weeks when I’ve gotten some time on my board and need to be responsible

graphite lubed pivot point was brilliant, will definitely use to prevent wear on brand new cups, thank you ! the softer the pencil ( 4B 6B etc. ) the more graphite iirc, if anyone else is nerd enough to feel like min-maxing the concept lol! One thing i don't agree on, is the dangers of water when washing bearings. Any citrus cleaner stuff will work wonders against the grime in your bearings, it's cheap, pollutes very little, even more so if one bothers running it through a coffee filter and use the same for a while, and it smells awesome. Only downside is that you must rinse and most important dry thoroughly, which is easy if you have a heater with a flat edge to bake the bearings on. i pick them up after 5 minutes, spin, then leave on the heater again a couple times to be sure. Never tried the other way ( spin the bearings while still on the bolt from the washing bottle, hair dryer tactically placed on a surface ) but i guess it's even easier. Cheers

3 years later I can watch this again with purpose, finally started riding the longboard that's been sat in my room for a couple years now and it's honestly the best thing I've done, but also I can binge these kinda videos and actually have a use for the knowledge now😭
Just pulled mines out of the basement, when i turn it makes a click sound i'm guessing that is from the pivot cup...? anyways screws and bearings are all rusted haha!

Thanks for the maintenance run-down. I own a heavyweight electric longboard and I sometimes switch the front trucks to tandem bridge trucks using 4x 107mm MBS AT wheels so I need to learn to maintain them. Spacers and speed rings are definitely underrated

Built-ins rule, and they aren't necessarily more expensive. I usually use skate wax in the pivot cup, but the graphite looks good.

PSA: Not only does 91% isopropyl alcohol clean much better than 70% but it has less water in it (the other % is water) & will dry much quicker so that moisure does not get trapped in those tight spaces! Also gets you blasted faster
On rkp trucks, i always reverse the kingpin bolt on the front truck, so the nut is inside the baseplate. That way if you hit a rock or curb, you dont mess up the bolt threads-which can make it hard to remove and install the nut
I use plumbers grease i found in my garage for my pivot cup and it works great

Hey! So i found that if you soak the bearings in CLP(gun cleaner/oil) it will really strip off corrosion and dirt, but needs to soak for a few hours. And acts as a great lubricant as well!

Yes so I'm using this longboard thing and I really appreciate your video way awesome but it seems to depending on which which end is the front either drift to the left or to the right I did a couple curve you fast and I'm curious is that a bearing you think or is that going to be misaligned trucks now I'm thinking it's probably my bearing

Back in the day we always just used petrol to clean bearings. Cleans amazingly well and dries quickly.

I've found that graphite is more efficient that using soap.
At least it doesn’t hold any moisture and fat. It’s absorbent too and at higher temps it stays the same

I have 4 longboards and the one time I forgot to do a monthly cleaning I nearly died because one of my bearings suddenly seized going 30 down a hill I go the extra few steps and clean my king pins, washers, inside the wheel hole, all the bolts and even the boards and haven't had many problems since
thanks this super useful! could you also clearing up the theory about how tight/loose trucks should be in longboarding? yeah crunchie made one but i dont quite understand :(
Apu889 it's very much a personal preference. I prefer them as loose as possible. I will loosen the bolt until it rattles and then tighten it up half a spin. Others prefer them tight. I will tighten it up if going at higher speeds, but for big carves I like em loose. Tight requires more pressure to turn but is more stable. Loose turns slicker and quicker but might wobble.
Try out yourself, half a spin with the skate tool and ride. Keep trying your turns and check the difference.
What about the cool new wand led lights instead of hot old school shop class lighting... I'm in my 50s and I even have marveled at advances in video lighting tech that is actually cheap! Lol! Thx for longboard advice. Learning for new xmas board I bought my son. Last batch of Loaded Fattail longboards. Accidentally bought deck only, so had to learn about all parts to buy 4 xmas! Ugh!

I know this is a little late, but for removing grip tape glue use a palette knife and a crap ton of WD 40 and slowly push away from yourself and it should peel off nicely

HIYA!! My fav wheels on my longboard and my cruiser are flat on the outside and a rounded cone on the inside. 65mm diameter 70mm length. Which side faces out? I figured the flat side since it's thicker and will slow coning effect? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!
Is there any tips for protecting the nose and tail of the board? My bhangra is one of the strongest boards I know and has already taken a beating but I would be great to get some tips of how to preserve a board when doing awesome dancing or going sideways down hills

What kind of alcohol do you use after you clean your bearings in order to lube them? Just rubbing alcohol?
I always use brakeparts cleaner to clean my barings
For squaky trucks you can also use something like paraffin wax or wax crayons if you happen to have some. Any liquids are basically a no-go as most damage the plastic bushings, like WD40. Don't use WD40.
