- In this video, I show how your can configure the Nordic nRF 52840 Dongle SoC (System on a Chip) for sniffing bluetooth low energy data packet over the air then viewing them in Wireshark. This video is for MAC OS users. However, there is a great video for windows users in the links below.

Thanks so much for doing this. I found it a few months ago when first trying to set up BLE scanning using NRF dongle and Wireshark and It was a lifesaver. Each time they upgrade Wireshark it kills it (I'm assuming overwrites the ext cap folder) so I go through some of the process again. PS in Mac you can just right click an App and go "Open Package Contents" and it shows you the folder :). Thanks so much again (from down-under) for taking the time to make the video
I really appreciate the feedback and thanks for the tip! (I do love my mac but I am not a native mac user as you can tell) So glad it helped.
Yeah I do believe you are right. I have run into a similar issue with the upgrades.
I try to make videos on things that I cannot easily find myself on TH-cam 🤣
Lifesaver - this video got me up and running. Thank your for taking the time to make this video.
Of course! Glad it helped you!
Hello, thank you for the excellence video and lifesaving one. I have quick question, is it possible to use Arduino Nano directly to do all these sniffing stuff without the dongle?
Hi there. So glad to hear that this video was helpful to you!
If the Arduino has a built in Bluetooth transceiver of some kind then it may be possible. However, this particular dongle comes flashed with proprietary firmware from Nordic so you maybe have difficulty using that firmware with non Nordic hardware. I would do some research here because I am honestly not sure.
hello, I'm on a project where I need to use ant+. Would it be possible for you to do a tutorial on Wireshark with Ant+.
Hi there! Thanks so much for reaching out. I will definitely add it to my list of video ideas and try to get to it as I have time.
LE LL = Low Energy Link Layer. Link Layer is one of the layers of the protocol
Thanks so much for the clarification
Any idea how to reset it back with the DEFAULT firmware that gets loaded onto it the first time you plug it in? NOT the reset button, that just sets it to the right mode to be flashed. I mean when you first buy the chip, plug it in, it asks if you want to flash it with the default firmware, you do, then you can view bluetooth devices, connect to them etc. in nRF Connect Bluetooth Low Energy app, but after flashing the nRF Sniffer firmware onto it, I can't figure out how to go back to the default firmware, seems more useful than the sniffer firmware because you can actually connect to things etc. 🤷♂
Hi there. I am not 100% sure how to do this. I think you may have to download the default firmware directly from Nordic then reflash the device. You can also reach out to Nordic support and they should be able to better advise you. Sorry I can't be of more help here!
I have a problem, my nrf52840 dongle not shown in wireshark interface,
i try to unstall and uninstall again with difference wireshark version like newest version or 3.4.3 version and try both macos catalina and win10 but sill can’t see.
I’m sure I already install python newer 3.6 and run python3 -m pip install -r requirements.txt
i already add files in extcap folder to personal extcap path and run nrf_sniffer_ble.bat (for win10 in mac run .sh) and type -extcap-interfaces. In win10 wireshark will have interface toolbar appears and i can choose nRF Sniffer for Bluetooth LE,
i try to flash .hex file using nrf connect desktop programmer like in this video
i’m done all these process but after refresh in wireshark or restart pc or unplug and plug nrf dongle again, i still cant see nrf in wireshark interface.
I did it for 2 days both macbook and windows10 laptop and very very feel bad about it, try to search alot but still cant see it in wireshark 😢😢😢, do you have any suggestion?
Hi there! I will do my best to help you get up and running. What version of the nrf_sniffer_for_bluetooth_le files are you using?
@@TheDataDaddi nrf_sniffer_for_bluetooth_le_4.1.1 maybe newest version for now
@@TheDataDaddi i should use older version?
Yes I would recommend using the older version. If I remember correctly, the nordic firmware is very temperamental so it could very well be a version incompatibility that is causing your issue. @@hamfat4515
Try this first and let me know if it fixes your issue.@@hamfat4515
Thanks man! Really helpful!
Hi there. So glad you found it useful!
Hello, can I reach you someway? I want to ask a few questions! Thanks for the great video
Sure email me at skingutube22@gmail.com
Great explanation. Thanks 🙏
So glad it was helpful to you!
Can this sniffer capture data packets?
Thanks for your help!
Of course! Happy to help.
hey man sick work....😃
Thank you! I am really glad it helped you.
Thanks!
thank you so much was really helpfull
