A lot of people always said Se7en, Fight Club, or Social Network as David Fincher's best movie. But this movie is definitely his most mature and ambitious work. His directing, alongside every actor' s performance is phenomenal. Amazing screenplay, impeccable cinematography, and captivating ending. Literally a perfect movie.

The basement scene with Bob Vaughn is just a great example of how to create tension in a film. You’re on the edge of your seat the whole time. It could really just be a short film, the context for the scene is established when Graysmith arrives, as he says that he wants to ask Vaughn a few questions about his friend as he’s trying to gather info on who could be the zodiac killer, and then it just spirals from there. Its incredible

I’ve studied the Zodiac case for years, and still stay updated on details. It was never proven that the person on that phone call was the actual Zodiac killer.
Every single one of the cypher he made have been solved, but none of them have given enough information to prove who he is.
The cyphers also prove that he may not have been as smart as people think. Once they were solved, some of the wording made absolutely no sense. The people who solved the cyphers realized that the killer made several mistakes when writing the cypher, which is why the final wording didn’t make sense.
Ed Edwards was arrested as an old man because his DNA match DNA found on murder victims killed in the 1980’s. A lot of people believed he was the Zodiac killer, because confessed to several murders that were almost identical to this of the Zodiac killer. He died in prison in 2011 before he gave anymore information about his crimes.
Till this day, there are other suspects, but the Zodiac was never caught.

This is one of my favorite films by Fincher, he covered the book thoroughly. Robert Graysmith's (Jake Gyllenhaal's character) book "Zodiac: The Shocking True Story of the Hunt for the Nation's Most Elusive Serial Killer " is very in depth you should read the book to get a better understanding of the case and the investigators as well as journalists. Thanks for reacting to this film, great video guys.

    • @romarqable
      @romarqable 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

Zodiac will likely never be caught.
You can see he was much smarter than he let on.
He killed two people, and when he went to follow the same MO, he left a survivor.
The third attempt, he switched from night time to day time, did it on a lake rather than a lovers lane. He wore an outfit, and needed glasses, and put them on his hood. Unless, again, that was a distraction. Ever seen someone who regularly wears glasses and then takes them off? They look very different.
Back to his attacks. At the lake, someone else was left alive.
So the following kill, he took out a cab driver.
Then he kidnapped a pregnant woman and her baby.
      They escaped.
At this point, we don't know if he killed anyone else. He kept writing letters, and eventually stopped that.
He either died, went to prison/psych ward for something else, or like BTK lost the urge. There's also the possibility someone got close to catching him, so he stopped entirely.
Arthur Leigh Allen was probably the closest to a prime suspect the case will ever have, unless new DNA technology catches someone through familial DNA like the Golden State Killer.

I also think it is interesting that both the men made it. I think instinctually as a woman the two women possibly lost more blood from defensive wounds they got when moving to try to protect themselves and women typically have less iron so it may have been harder for them to stop bleeding.

To Paul Avery's defense, he referenced an article by a group of psychologists and psychiatrists suggesting he had repressed homosexual tendencies. But everyone, including Zodiac, read that as Avery calling him a homosexual.
The Melvin Belli interview is on TH-cam and they did a great job reenacting it for the movie.
One thing manufactured for the movie was the buddy duo of Avery and Graysmith. They knew of each other and had passing conversations and that was it. Avery was also a journeyman writer, dude lived damn near all over the world. Wrote a book about the Patty Hearst kidnapping and worked with investigators to prove a man's innocence on death row. His family was pretty ticked at the movie portraying him as druggie whose life was ruined by Zodiac but it was the exact opposite.

Around the time I mentioned, there is this scene between Toschi (Ruffalo) and Lee (Mulroney) on the staircase. If you notice in that scene, two people cross the courtyard. The man with the french cut in that scene is actually Bryan Hartnell, the survivor form the Lake Berryessa attacks.😊

The dispatcher who answered the call from the killer in the opening scene, described the way he said that "good bye." The way he says it in the movie is exactly how she described it. Many people who were still alive who had any involvement with what happened back then were interviewed by Fincher and consulted with the writer of the film. This movie is as accurate as a "based on a true story" movie can get. After seeing this in 07, I fell down the rabbit hole that is the Zodiac. I read both of Graysmith's books, read dozens and dozens of actual case files. They can be found online, as well as endless news articles from the 60s and 70s that are bone-chilling to read. I've been to every crime scene. This movie is masterful from beginning to end. It has a brilliant three act structure. Act 1 is a straight-up horror film, focusing on the victims. Act 2 is like a 1970s police procedural highlighting the two cops played by Ruffalo and Edwards, and act 3 is a full-on suspense thriller/mystery with Gyllenhaal taking the lead. Great film. Great reaction.

The whole show was great and doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Him as Bullock is the FIRST thing that comes to mind when I see him. Long before I remember he was in Blade or Ghost Rider. The scene where Graysmith puts it all together for Toschi at the end was a bit different in the first script. He basically lays it all out for a room full of detectives and experts. In that scene, he brings back an easily missed line from Bob Vaughn.
Vaughn said he keeps all the original posters but threw all the knock offs out in the trash. Graysmith’s conclusion was that Leigh found the posters in the trash and took them, modeling the Zodiac writing off the poster writing.

Interesting tidbit: the cipher that was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle in ‘69 (known as the 340 Cipher cuz it has 340 characters) was allegedly solved just a couple years ago and confirmed by the FBI. In case it breaks TOS I’m not gonna type out what it says but there’s a line that reads “THAT WASNT ME ON THE TV SHOW” which seems to confirm that whoever called in and set up that meeting wasn’t him. As morbid and horrific as this whole situation was, it is so incredibly fascinating. Especially given the fact that at least 1 of the ciphers stayed decrypted for over 50 years

Facts: 1 - Robert Graysmith wrote the book that was the basis for this film. He divorced his wife in 1980 and blames his obsession with the Zodiac case for it happening. 2 - Dave Toschi was the real life inspiration for the character Harry Callahan of Dirty Harry. The film's villain Scorpio was inspired by Zodiac as well. Toschi also inspired the look and professionalism of Steve McQueen's character in the film Bullitt. 3 - The line from this film of, "Easy Dirty Harry," was a direct reference to Toschi's inspiration towards the creation of that character. 4 - In Star Wars (1977) Luke Skywalker wants to go to Toshe Station, which is another reference to Dave Toschi.

Lee Norris (Minkus) was also 'Mouth' Mcfadden on One Tree Hill for 9 years, Chloe Sevigny was Nikki - Bill Paxton's 2nd sister wife on HBO's Big Love and Anthony Edwards ('Goose') played Dr. Mark Greene on 8 seasons of E.R.😊

    I. LOVE. THIS. BRILLIANT. FILM. I grew up in the Bay Area and Sonoma County California in the 80s, and the Zodiak was still present in news and books. I read an amazing biography on the Zodiak, which is the book this movie is based on. ❤️🎬❤️

For the taxi scene where Mark Ruffalo is investigating, that was all green screen. Fincher is a master at subtle SFX work.

Just watched this movie last week amazing timing! Loved this movie, surprisingly more than Se7en even though I hear more about it. Loved the tension throughout, and the characters are so believable I stopped noticing I was watching RDJ and Mark Ruffalo.

Get ready to have your minds blown, gents.
That entire cab sequence up until Stine picks up Zodiac, all CGI.
Production team made the shifts in CG and live action shots seamless. Watching it over a dozen times its still difficult to see what's what.

This is a film that really stayed with me and made me a Fincher fan. It intrigued me to learn about the true story and led me to become a True Crime buff.

After this movie, the police reopened the Zodiac case.
The couple that deciphered the Zodiac letter knew that the most common doubled letter in the english language is L & since the Zodiac was a narcissist, they knew that he would start a sentence with "I"

I saw this movie when I was very young. Maybe 9/10. I remember being so enthralled by the movie but I hated the ending because they didn’t identify the killer. Back then, I had no idea it was based on a true story. I was just pissed at how good the movie is yet had a “shit” ending. I appreciate the ending now as an adult.

    1. This movie was not only RDJ's big comeback to serious acting after his years of drug and legal issues, but it was what made Marvel want to cast him as Iron Man.
    2. Those phones calls Armstrong had with the other police departments were pretty accurate to who disjointed and very non-communitive the investigation was between the different PD's. One of the many reasons Zodiac was probably never caught.
    3. By modern standards, Zodiac would come across as an incel lashing out, but killing the cabbie broke that pattern.
    4. A recently deciphered Zodiac letter said, "That was not me on the TV show." Very eerie!
    5. Are there really not many basements in California, at least back in the 60s?
    6. Allen's trailer was really in a state of clutter when the cops searched it. Not sure if the squirrels are true, though, lol.
    7. I think the real Bob Vaughn was known to be a cheery and merry guy compared to his movie counterpart, and the footsteps upstairs were his wife.
    8. Graysmith's obsessions with Zodiac did ruin his second marriage.
    9. The real Graysmith really did surveil Allen when he was working at an Ace Hardware, but he didn't actually confront him head on, and he even brought his kids with him when he did it.
    10. The real Megeau did identify Allen from a lineup, but the cops didn't take it as seriously as they seemed to here because it was super dark when he was shot, and the Zodiac had the flashlight-gun pointed at him the whole time, making unlikely they he got a real look at Zodiac's face.

If you listen to the voice of the zodiac on the calls and the few times like “helping” the lady with her tire you can tell it’s CLEARLY the same actor as Arthur Leigh Allan . I’ve heard that actor far too often be it drew Carey show as Drew’s brother, the Glades as Jim’s partner etc
