Naked and the Dead is the book that begins with the words "Hot dog!", I think, maybe? Always makes me laugh, to mention hot dogs. Love the magic of you two together!

Thomas Mann is an interesting counter-example to your debut novel theory.

Great episode! Of the writers mentioned I was thinking of reading Updike, mostly because of his literary standing, should I waste my time?

I've enjoyed Updike's work but I suspect our esteemed book critic has an entirely different viewpoint, to be sure. Like so much, with passing time, the prevalence of a certain attitude towards women is certainly nothing less than problematic.

Didn’t he actually stab one of his wives too?

Mid century misogynist writers, love it.

Idiotic and uninformed assessment of Mailer's life and work.

"Went through a succession of publications -- almost all of whom are awful." This made your case, rogcrater.
