2 reasons why i am extremely hesitant about purchasing the game.
1st) You have practicaly abandoned all your terrinoth games for the last 5 years at least.
So will this get some lukewarm expansions like Runebound did and then you move on to the next thing?
    Who knows?
2nd)The use of the app capabilities have left me wanting in your other games.
For example ,in Mansions of Madness we get 3-4 scenarios per expansion and that was pretty much it.
You never combined all the tiles and mechanics of each expansion to make new scenarios in the app, thus wasting much of the potential the game had.

Yes, it really feels like wasted potential when you have so many physical things but you don't have scenios where to combine them all, this happened with original Descent 2.0 too, you had a lot of expansions but you didn't have campaigns that required more than one of them, at least you could use the monsters, but all those extra tiles and bosses...

That's just the FFG thing. I played a ton of Star Wars Destiny and the game got nuked at the beginning of the year. I'm tired of getting got. If FFG wants my mopey they have to show they are going to commit themselves to a project or at least have a planned offramp. Who wants to pay $175 for something that's going to get immediately dropped?

The problem with art is it's being not consistent. Art on cards are in comic style where it's realistic on tiles. It doesn't match.

    • @retroarcadefan
      @retroarcadefan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

You have nailed it.. The sculpts look fantastic and realistic, then the tiles look less polished and less realistic, finally the card artwork is ... well ... just not quality and not realistic at all. If this game is targeting a near 200 dollar price tag it should rework the card artwork at the very least. Style and quality do not even come close to matching the sculpts.

Hard pass. I got all 2ed expansions. I love descent. But now you get only 1/3 of campaign? Tons of cardboard!? Every mission will be like lego manual at the begining? How to store all this mess? Art is just not right. Minies are very nice, but this is not only about minies. And what is the point to play board game when more than a half of actions you need to do in app? I can just play videogames at this point.

  • @PickleTheHutt

I was so excited when this game was teased in July, but after seeing this there's almost no chance I buy in.
I find the character art and ultra-bland tiles so bad that there's almost no way the gameplay can make up for it.
I love the tiles and art in 2ed (and all the art I've seen in all previous Terrinoth games in general), why the change?
The card flipping mechanic doesn't sound interesting at all and seems to be just a gimmick with no thematic reason.
Also, one thing a dungeon crawler needs, imo, is fun loot to find. One of the main reasons I dislike Journeys in Middle Earth is that you don't really get loot (starting gear upgrades over time instead, only trinkets are found). It's hard to know for sure but it sounds like this game will be like JiME regarding gear and loot which is disappointing coming from 2ed.
I have some issues with 2ed Road to Legend, but almost all of those come from bolting on pure co-op to a 1 vs many game. I had hoped this game would be essentially 2ed but designed with app assisted co-op from the ground up. This is absolutely not that and is almost certainly a pass for me.

3D elements are + but why cardboard?
Tiles and art are big -
    App is +
Minis are + Slot systems on the bases is +
Price is out of market margin.
The Choice to name it Descent is wrong, you should name it something else.
Artistically, continuity and transitioning has nothing to do or resembling with Descent and this is what was looking the community that plays descent.
Also not reprinting the expansions for DE2 is a huge turn off for those that collecting Descent for sometime now.

My oppinion in one word: Dissapointed! I don't like the art style, the somehow photorealistic dungeon tiles, the 3d elements...minis look good but still, the style doesn't fit. And what is it with the absurd price? $175 for a few minis and a lot of cardboard you can assemble to create "3D terrain pieces"...we all did this in kindergarden. I am going to have to 100th the statements from many others here. Why, for the love of God, FFG, did you go with this art style for the cardboard? The miniatures look great (at least the 3D renders do), but that bland cartoonish art style for the rest of it is so off putting. Second edition was so spot on with how the art of the cards and the tiles really drew you into the game. I would hope that it's not too late to change this, but by this point. probably is.

What happened to the art of this game? This is a major FF release and they didn't put any effort into the art. The art design is objectively bad. The box art is fine; but EVERYTHING else is hot garbage. They're saying this isn't decent 3rd edition, so, i guess we wait for 3rd edition. After this game crashes and burns, hope that FF gets their act together.
Wait for Descent 3rd edition or Imperial Assault 2nd edition.

I still have soooo many good games to play. No need for a third Descent.

  • @tomihawk01
    @tomihawk01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

Wow, came down here to say how uninspiring the artwork and aesthetic is and it's all everyone is talking about. I don't blame them. As one of the designers said early in the video, "there are many studios producing dungeon crawlers", so if you want me to drop $175 on a game then I expect it to be a thing of beauty when I lay it out on the table. I want something I'd feel inspired to post pictures of. I want to feel like I'm playing in an epic fantasy world, not a Saturday morning cartoon. The price tag doesn't suggest you're marketing this to 12 year olds but the artwork does.
Did they blow the entire art budget on the sculpts? Those character cards look like Adobe Illustrator clipart. They're the sort of images an artist can rattle off in 20 minutes. I get that the Descent games have always had more of an "animation" style than the realism of LoTR and GoT, but this is something else. Bland, generic and uninspiring doesn't begin to describe it. Even the box art is so abstract that wouldn't give it a second glance on the shelf of a board game store. Compare the abstract box art to the story the 1st and 2nd editions tell of elves, wizards and barbarians fighting dragons. What is this box art supposed to depict?
I appreciate that they've built a new app from the ground up after having learned from the old apps. That was probably a big investment. I'd love to see the MoM app migrated to it so we get an undo button, but since MoM looks like it's another in FFGs growing repertoire of abandoned games I doubt that will ever happen. Maybe JiME though.
I was excited when this was first announced because I'd decided it was time for me to get in on an epic dungeon crawler campaign game and I love their other App games MoM and JiME, but this has definitely changed my mind about Descent.

    • @tomihawk01
      @tomihawk01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I should add that I feel bad for the designers. I'm sure they put a lot of work into their game and it seems good. I'll certainly watch a playthrough to get a feel for it. It's just a shame that people won't be buying it because of artwork choices.

I spend a couple of hours trying to get a specific expansion for descent 2ed. only today. No chance. D2Ed is still a fine running game but you cannot get the expansions you need to complete campaigns offered by the app. Same for Runebound 2Ed. I have two of the big Expansions and 6 Card decks but then 3rdEd came and killed it completely. No chance to get more of the great 2Ed.
Are you trying to get pple to go all in at release? Who can afford to buy everything on release? Is that a marketing coup you pull off? Artificially creating a shortage? Trying to avoid any surplus copies which could possibly catch dust in your warehouse? I will not go for this. You will surely abandon it again ...

As a graphic designer of 15+ years I have to agree with the others. There is a disconnect between the cards, tiles, and minis. Inconsistent art style. The minis are fantastic and quite epic. The comic style of the cards are cool but not for this type of game. The tile art is not good at all, it’s like comparing PlayStation 1 graphics to modern day games. Definitely not the level of quality we expect from powerhouse publisher FFG! I think they shouldn’t call this Descent so as not to blemish the product line and later produce a real 3rd Edition that both fans and newcomers will enjoy.

I have identified several stuff that sounds promising compared to Descent 2nd edition. Like more exploration based compared to race against time. The thing that kills the app Road to legend is that you have to move fast and really fast, unless you want deadly perils to hit your heroes with 32 hearts of dmg collectively (like hey you ran out of time, now die and lose this quest).
Also using the old system with not revealing the whole map is better i think even though i kinda liked that part in Descent 2nd edition. Im looking forward to this. Sounds great so far.

Some thoughts about what I've seen in this presentation.
    1) Like the idea of 3D terrain, it's pretty cool!
    2) Dont know what to think about the app. I liked Road to Legend app for Descent 2ed, 'cause it only showed the monster's algorithm, we throwed dice for heroes and monsters, done all the calculations for ourselves. Throwing dice and writing the result in the app isn't fun for me. Although I think app will give many interesting narrative possibilities.
    3) Too bad there are no standalone scenarios. They should be.
    4) 175$ for 16 scenarios is too much. Should be more adventures for that price, imho
    5) Miniatures are cool
    6) Art on tiles looks unattractive on the screens. Dont know how it looks live. The other art looks fine, except Galaden's silly face and those massive horns on Brynn's helmet -I imagine the poor fellow stucks in every doorway.
    7) 6 heroes and only one female character? I mean, you do know players like to associate themselves with the characters? So, I have friends, who would like to associate themselves with black female dwarf, half dragon or androgynous human avenger... But how about classic human and elf types? My wife loves to play Ashrian and Alys Raine - no troubles with sexual objectification, 'cause they are what they should be - strong personalities in the first place. Someone wil say, Legends of the Dark are inclusive, but someone will call it discriminative, because everyone got to have the opportunity to represent themselves.
Conclusion: pretty dissapointed. Love the Terrinoth setting, love Descent 2ed, but this new game doesnt make me want to spend 175$ on it. At least, for now.

I am not a fan of the cartoon like artwork. I like more of the gritty realistic fantasy art that is in so many great games out there. I am not sure why but it kills the game experience for me. I also dislike a game that requires an app....Why not make a video game if you require a computer/tablet/phone to play. I like app integration for environment and to lay out the map piece by piece so there are no spoilers, but all the other actions needed for a Coop experience can be done with cards, adventure books and the like. I am really torn but I see no reason to move over to this from 2.0. Someone else mentioned in the comments that you seem to be dropping many of the Terrinoth games, which also makes me hesitant. I was really excited when you came out with Heroes of Terrinoth and bought it right away only to find out that there was no more content planned for that game. When I first heard about this game I was so excited having owned the previous two versions, but now, Eh, I think I would play it if one of my friends buy it, but I will stick with 2.0.

Reason why people hate apps ? Go to 01:25:00 . Perfect example. Interaction with app is just too long. It hogs all the play time just fiddling with the thing. So either you suffer down time for one person to manipulate and punch in all the battle stuff, or pass around the medium to do all the battle stuff yourself while others wait. All in all, apps are ok if they enhance, à la MoM. This one seems to just drag the battle system. Don't want to watch a screen 60% of the time I play a board game, especially not pay 175$ to do that. I don't mind all this when playing solo, but never with friends. It kills the fun for everyone. That's only on item why it's a huge pass for me. Without details, the rest is Art, price and overall FFG experience with other games. Remember heroes of Terrinoth ? Warhammer quest ? Outer Rim ? Fallout ? plus 2 other re-iterations that completely obsoleted my collection (X-WIng and TI3) If it wasn't for their awesome LCG's, it would've been bye-bye FFG.

The tiles you guys used before were awesome and so detailed, same with Imperial Assault. There was no reason to try and improve that. Agree that the tile art from D2E was very thematic and vibrant, this is like D&D grid maps. I still think the 3D elements are what will be the bigger draw for map layouts, and I do like the thought of the lava and water areas, but if they flat, paper thin sheets, I don’t know how I feel about it, especially for 175 USD. The gameplay will have to be evolutionary in the series. Still have yet to see gameplay and application integration demos. Maybe we are only getting a look and a dungeon map, hopefully there will be more outdoor, lush green maps.

Game mechanics in 2nd Edition has so many flaws though. I have Manor or ravens, Lair of the wyrm, Shadows of nerekhall and Labyrinth of ruins. So many quests are unbalanced in the shadowrune campaign and this is slightly better in Heirs of blood where several maps have been close. But still, some quests im just huh, how did they design this. Either the overlord or the players don't stand a chance. And my biggest critique is the rule that the overlord (which is me so far in the game) can horde all cards and play them all (at least those with different names) at once in encounter 2 of a map. Im excited for this game. Listening to them and having played the app Road to legend i think the app vill be great when you get used to it in this game. If the game mechanics gets better, it outweighs the poor art by far. Wish though both would be great.

Going to go against the grain of TH-cam comments: I like the art style.
I say this as someone with pretty much all expansions for Descent 2Ed. People are saying this is "cartoony" - but it's actually not, it's just more stylised like a manga style art, more stylised than serious/gothic/graphic fantasy art styles, but it's not cartoony like a kid's comic. Descent 2Ed art looks more cartoony than this art style - 2Ed looks like Disney in comparison to this.

i like the idea and applaud the approach. i disagree with all the negative points made by the rest - this looks very interesting. i love the digital integration to help with the fiddly points and let people get on with a game. it sounds like it takes a lot of weight off on 1 or more players having to manage all the rules letting everyone basically just enjoy the game - essentially handling rules disputes and questions etc.... can't wait to play it. to those complaining about the art , i can't believe the art alone brought you here to see the game, surely you're here for more than that (or you could just design your own avatar art if its critical). the components look fantastic and the 3d element is great. there is a lot of other great stuff to focus on here.

    The good:
    - minis and chip system. No more red and yellow enemies (i never got around to painting my 2E). Mini quality is better, chips allow for variations among monster types.
    - new mechanics with dice and abilities, flipping ability cards gives more tactical options
    - promise of a more integrated story, character specific interactions
    - no more tiny ass cards, legibility looks much better
    - weapon switching and damage types seems cool
    - app reworked. I could never get a big enough regular group for an overlord campaign, so like coop focus and that the app was redesigned for the game instead of tacking it on after the fact
    Neutral (need to see more)
    - new art style. I’m not as put off as many on this thread but it doesn’t grab me either
    - 3D terrain. How does it impact gameplay? How sturdy is it, and how hard to set up?
    - character classes and archetypes combined? Better for character progression or limiting customization?
    - town phase / crafting and customization
    Negatives
    - price. Box is gonna set back $175...then of course the inevitable expansions.
    - not compatible with my 2E collection
Looking forward to the gameplay video to see how it all works together.

It's been stated many times, that this isn't descent 3.0. Yes we love descent 2.0 but this is clearly an attempt at getting more into the app driven board game genre. Nothing wrong with that. Means a fully cooperative experience and solo friendly.
It's got it's pros and cons but with this game fully developed with the app in mind, I feel we will see a MoM2nd vibe. It's a learning experience and so I hope FFG took what they learned from Mansions and continue to build on it. I wanna see better replayability and more variation with the monster ai.

Thank you for the information and demonstrations. I have kind of a different question: (I did look through the comments and couldn't find it's answer or even anyone else asking it) Based on the tendency of many KickStarted games to be going the video game route of replacing challenging games with more kind of Power Fantasy ones, is that what this game will be like? I love Descent and always have, and nothing can make me ever part with my Runebound or Descent 2nd ed. As you say, the games have their own place and niche to fill, but I LIKE the challenge. I can't really ascertain a "difficulty level" from your presentation and whenever I hear "more narratively driven" and "player focused" to me it means Power Fantasy "difficulty" level. Not that that's bad, it's just a game made for a different kind of player. They also tend to be "grindy." Another of my favorite games is Eldritch Horror played with all expansions. I don't mind set up, I love a good challenge and narrative, I just don't want the game to be too easy, or too hard actually. I enjoy the gameplay of Arkham Horror and Mansions of Madness as well but I would swear that it's designer is *mad* at me or something. Sure we saved Dunwich, as long as by "saved" you mean there were at least a couple of squares that weren't engulfed in flame, While Elder Scrolls thinks I'm a lovely if a bit challenged, human being. It's probably one of the most difficult questions for a designer: The puzzle of balance. Also, given the price point is there any way you could go a bit more into the narrative and it's quality? Maybe an animated prologue or something? Or even just audio, since some of my old favorites aren't characters anymore (Valadir, Ronan, Silhouette, Mordrog, etc.) maybe they cold be part of the *story?* Maybe set it like an old school radio drama or something? For people who would be sold on the narrative, I think you would find any effort to sell it would be repaid well. Again, thanks much for your presentation, it sure is beautiful *and* tempting, yet $175 means not upgrading my console and not starting a new Kill Team, in other words it's a significant portion of an entertainment budget that's already taken one heck of a hit and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one in that boat. (Or hastily improvised "floatation" device since, for some of us, it really has been *that* big of a hit and I truly sympathize with those people.) I'm not saying it can't be worth that, I'm just asking for a couple of assurances to make sure that it's a good fit for me and my group as it would likely be our *only* fit for quite a while. :)

I see a lot of people complaining about art and price. I somewhat agree on the art, however what you are paying for is all of the game pieces and the development of the app and all the programming that goes with it. What sets this game apart from 2E is the play style and how you interact with the game. Such as searching trees or enemies stealing treasure chess. I am very excited about this as FFG is making the game more life like and very interactive

      @paolods502 3 ปีที่แล้ว

The complaints are fully justified. And even I, while loving descent franchise, admit to being disappointed by what I see for now in this 3rd edtion.
The price is very high, the art style is not spot on and inspired, the tilesets are a bit ugly, and I also don't like the components of the 3d scenarios very much, also because they seem largely made of cardboard and, consequently, not they have the depth and effect of true 3d as can one have the molded plastic components (which I can also find at cheap prices). I can't judge the gameplay for now but, from what I see, the only aesthetically pleasing things are the box and the miniatures, but that's not enough to justify the $ 175 spend.

When are we likely to see a game-play video?

I loved everything about this! My wife and I love app integrated games as we connect our iPad to a big screen tv so everyone can see, the music adds its own ambiance but you still get the physicality of being on the table.
This looks like it adds soooo much to the physical look of the table presence.
My ONLY deterrent, which I hope is addressed, is what we get for the price point. $175 is steep but not unrealistic based off of how much ive put into this hobby. I just want to know about how they plan on future integration with act 2 and act 3. Are all three these big boxes at that price point? Is there going to be additional side campaigns/scenarios that will be available on the app at even their typical $5 price point?
Still, I gladly spend $15 for an Exit game for 1-2 hours of fun with my wife. I will gladly spend $40 to go to the movies (prepandemic) for 2 hours of fun with my wife.
50 hours at $175 comes out to $3.50 an hour. If I enjoy this even close to how much I’ve enjoyed Descent 2nd edition, or LOTR:JIME, I’m all about it!

@@pcuimac Nailed it :D.. but you could give a chance to content created by Dave Filoni. It's great, even if it's been under Disney

Will FFG release a version for Tabletop Simulator (VR)? Might be a nice money earner.....
