Great video. 👍🏼 Just mixed up some myself.
In case anyone wants to mix their alkalin8.3 powder to the same concentration as the alkalin8.3 liquid version then mix 129.6 grams of powder with 1liter of RODI.
Why those 2 specific powders over brightwells regular 2 part powders
This is awesome--I've been meaning to move to powders, this video confirms it. One question, anyone know what's the difference between Brightwell's Reef Code A & B, and Alkalin8.3 & Calcion?
Reef Code A and B are ironically balanced, which means they also have magnesium and trace. Check the ingredients. Alk8.3 and Calcion are just buffer and carbonates.
The video's recommended mix of Alakalin8.3-P to create a stock dosing solution is only about 1/2 the concentration as Brightwell's Alkalin8.3 liquid. Here's the math... 560 grams of Alakalin8.3-P per 1 gallon of RO/DI water (0 TDS) is 0.148 gram of Alkalin8.3-P per 1 milliliter. 1 milliliter of this Alakalin8.3-P stock dosing solution raises Alk by 1.775 dKH per gallon. By comparison, 1 milliliter of the Alkalin8.3 liquid raises Alk by 3.1 dKH per gallon. So, the Alakalin8.3-P stock dosing solution has only 57.3% the concentration of Alakalin8.3 liquid. You still save money, but you'll need to dose almost twice as much.
Is there a way to get the strength of the powder 8.3 to match the liquid?
@@SA8N According to Brightwell Aquatics, no. They use a proprietary combination and heating process to attain max concentration in their liquid formula. Roughly 1/2 the concentration is the best I could consistently attain, even with heating the solution.
What do you think? ESV equivalent to Brightwell? I use ESV for my nano's.
I have used ESV in the past, its good stuff. Just started using this. I know Aundree from reefmoon shiners swears by it for his tanks/dosing systems
One thing I really like about Brightwell’s Ca & ALK as well as their salt is that it’s anhydrous. I’m probably going to convert to the powder as it’s cheaper to ship. More cost effective. 😊
By chance, do you have the “correction” calculation from the caclion-p? I’ve purchased a new tub and it only includes directions for the dosing solution.
Hello can I still use Kalkwaser for my ATO and still dose these?
Thanks
For what it's worth, the highest concentration of Calcion-P I have been able to mix is 1320 grams per 1 gallon of 0 TDS RO/DI water (vice the 480 grams per gallon recommended in the video). The chemical reaction of mixing the Calcion-P with water creates its own heat, so no need to heat the water; just add the Calcion-P a little at a time, mix until dissolved, and repeat. This max dissolution formula yields a Calcion-P stock dosing solution that raises Ca2+ by 33.13 ppm per 1 milliliter. 1 milliliter of Brightwell's Calcion liquid raises Ca2+ by 40 ppm, so this max dissolution Calcion-P stock dosing solution is much closer to the Calcion liquid in overall concentration.
Great write up. Did you hear the water to get it to dissolve more? I found any more and it took a long time to dissolve or I had go add a tiny bit. Stir. Add a tiny bit stir. Ect
@@ReefDudes I didn’t need to heat the Calcion-P. I did not try to heat the Alkalin8.3-P because it was just too much hassle with adding small amounts of -P, heating, repeating. I wasted 660g of the -P thinking I could get it to dissolve all at once in 1 gal RODI, but no joy. Probably won’t try again because the low return on investment given the effort.
😜 P*R*O*M*O*S*M!!!
Hello thanks for video I have a question I’m mixing the alkalin 8.3-p exactly as you same amount same stirrer and mine is not turning clear after 1.5 hours of stirring the rodi water was a little cold but I don’t see it clearing up. Is this normal? Thanks
I have found that I have to heat the RO/DI water to get the powder to fully dissolve. Heat by immersing the mixing container in a larger pot of hot water. Also ensure your RO/DI is reading 0 TDS; any dissolved solids with complete with the Alkalin8.3-P's dissolution.
Great video! Thanks for the info and doing the math! Haha 😁
Took me a while to figure it out haha so had to share!
Wow, that mixture is much higher than Andre from Reef Moonshine. He only mixes 50g per L on both products.
My mix is the max saturation Can always make it lighter abs just dose more
Got the same mag stirrer and it was one of the best 32.00 I have spent on Amazon. Such a time saver. I mix a lot of AFR with mine and leave it going for two or three days straight wide open with no issues. Had it going on 2 years. Might have to consider the Brightwell when AFR is gone next time but man that stuff is so easy to deal with. Thanks for the video I am always looking for new options and definitely one to consider. If AFR gets hard to find I will try this before going back to 2 part. Would this increase salinity overtime like a 2 part do you know? Almost got in trouble with salinity creep with the amount of 2 part I used to dose.
Thanks for the money saving tips
Once it is mixed at max saturation do you ever need to stir again before dosing or will it last a couple of months in suspension?
So far once fully dissolved I dump into my big dosing containers and forget it. Havent had any issues
With this max saturation do you have any dosing starting points? I don’t know if starting at 10ml a day is insanely high or insanely low. Specifically I’ve got a 100g mixed reef medium stocked.
For my medium-stocked 850 liter mixed reef, I dose 180ml/day of Alkalin8.3 liquid (not the -P mix, but the off-the-shelf liquid), 25ml/day of Calcion liquid, and 25ml/day of Magnesion liquid. If I create an Alkalin8.3-P stock solution according to the video's recommendations, I'd have to dose 314 ml/day. See my reply to this video made on 15 July 2022.
Another great video, so awesome and thank you, do you have the mixer on your site for sale
I dont sell them but did get mine off amazon geni.us/magneticstirer
Thanks for this! Great video dude!
Thanks Fish Pony!
