    Glad it survived all this cold. I'm going to check on mine today after we have the big warm up

      Yea I wish I had a box like yours for this one but if I left the fronds intact and tied them straight up the box would have to be 20'

    Glad to see it made it! The spear looks really good!

    I was a little surprised to see the ends of the palms crispy, but it was pretty darn cold for you. It looks like it's doing pretty well and at least you'll get to enjoy it for another year.

      There is some green on them but I don't think it liked the fronds cut in half then wrapped as well. It's pushing already so that's the good news

    Looking good. Love the Waggy also.

    I always enjoy your videos. I meant to ask you in your good, bad... video if the -1f was standing or wind-chill. Fingers crossed for all of us that there's no more significant cold this winter.

    • @tntropics
      @tntropics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      -1F was NOT windchill. Windchill was -25F or more with 30-50mph winds

    You're definitely successful with palm wrapping(winterizing)👍👍 I say that you should now tackle...serenoa repens!🌴

      I thought about that one but just don't want to deal with it since it is somewhat similar to the more hardy S. minor

    Glad to see that spear looks green!

    • @tntropics
      @tntropics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea it makes me sad seeing it get beat up but no way to protect it fully without a 20 foot box

  • @palmtreedude
    @palmtreedude 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    At least it still has visible green! Hopefully you warm up quickly and the spring and it gets a quick start!

    We hit 22° here in the FL Panhandle at the coast. Have you thought about using the older large C9 incandescent lights. Lows had them for $5.99 ea 2 weeks before Christmas. They really put out about 3 times the heat as the mini lights.

      If I had a box around it instead of wrapped in frost cloth I could use them. Thanks for the info

      Going to try. We'll see what happens this year and winter

  • @Salmiyaguy1
    @Salmiyaguy1 ปีที่แล้ว

    did you monitor the temperature under that wrapping? This is why I only use the box method and a tree that tall I would used 3 times as many lights and only C9 lights.

    • @tntropics
      @tntropics  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I had to cut fronds in half to make it 12-14' tall. One reason it is ugly. Without cutting would have stood 20'. The fronds are too stiff/big to bend upward anymore as they are solid wood. The temps on the thermometer were in range. Can you build a 20' tall box? What's your tallest palm and where are you located?

    Thankfully the spear looks good and hopefully you can enjoy it for many years to come and not have to replace it with the waggy.

    Do you sell these? I’ve looked all over the Dallas area and asked NT palms with no luck.

    • @tntropics
      @tntropics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I don't sell palms. Dallas is too cold for them, it's a 9A palm. They may have in Houston at a place called palm professionals

      I lost my windmill and Sylvester two winters ago. The mules I looked at in St Augustine Fl they advertised down to 10. What would you recommend that has the same look of the mule or a good Sylvester?

    • @tntropics
      @tntropics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shawnland6379 Nothing is hardy as a mule with that look. The only thing close which is hardier is a butia capitata. I'm not sure what zone you're in guessing 8A? th-cam.com/video/KTbWs0Gx7fE/w-d-xo.html . You might try a Jubea chilesis

    • @shawnland6379

      I’m in 8b. I really liked my Sylvester so I’m going to try another and a mule. My power went out for a week which is why I lost my others. They were about 5 yrs along.
