  • Hey gang, in today's video we do something we haven't tried before and that is BACKROLLING. We've seen a few people talk about it here and there and we've always wondered...does backrolling REALLY make that big of a difference. You'll be surprised. In this video we go into some of our findings regarding the subject and we hope you can take away just as much from this video as we did the experience. Stay tuned for our next video gang! Thanks for watching and we'll see ya in the next one!

    I used to spray lemon pledge on the gun, hose, and sprayer which didn’t allow the overspray to stick so it cleaned up very easily at the end of the day. Good work Pack, job looks great so far!

    They make a spray Whip that goes on your sprayer hose and it will save on wrist fatigue. Happy painting! And it's good to have both the 9" and the 18" roll to back roll with. 9" for corners 18" for wide area! Happy painting.

    Different surfaces, different brands of drywall, and patches all absorb primer differently. I think that is what Jordan encountered while backrolling.

      Some may come treated, but it's probably fairly rare.
      The best way is to put on a thin coat and wait for it to fully cure. This will vary depending upon the chemistry of the paint itself. The second coat will cover much better. As you said, paper and mud will soak up the paint at different rates.

    As a painting contractor of 20+ years. I spray and backroll practically everything. The only thing not rolled is the trim. Fresh drywall is a MUST backroll situation. Also to get perfect results on new drywall I recommend: mud & tape, prepcoat, texture, THEN prime (PVA), THEN paint (preferably 2 coats). Prep coat will make your texture come out very nice without any flashing issues.

    To start I'd like to say I love your guy's channel. I happened upon it yesterday and I'm almost through every video and can't get enough. You guys are great. You have the same concept about perfection that I had when I has remodeling a house, tiling a bathroom or a kitchen or hanging and mudding drywall. The only affliction I had is it was never perfect in my eyes. In regards to a statement you made on the video about commenters asking about using the green board. I was taught in the military and a old time drywaller I worked with when I lived in Texas that the only time you need to use green board is in high moisture areas. Green board is standard drywall with a moisture resistant green paper. If there are any tears or defects that pernitrate the paper it will be subject to failure and at risk of moisture damage that drywall gets in high moisture areas. I typically used green board in bathrooms as added protection alongside of a good quality exhaust fan and hopefully a window. It is important if your only doing a 3/4 tile on the bathtub/shower that the 1/4 portion at the top (above possible water level) is done in green board because that is the area with the highest risk to moisture and mold. Anyways, you guys keep it up and be safe!

    Hey guys, another great video I’m sure other people have mentioned this, but you should use the fine finish tips. They have less overspray and sprayed the paint way more evenly and use less paint also

  • @frankpmarsala7682

    I am a retired Union Painter from Chicago. On commercial jobs we only back rolled any sags when spraying. But for residential (worked in a lot of up scaled homes) it was a must, especially when using paint with any type of a sheen. As mentioned previously you lay it off in the same direction so that you don't have alternating rows of texture due to the roller nap pulling one way and then the other. And back rolling on residential jobs was used even when brush and rolling . . . roll out a section and then go back and lay it off top to bottom.

    Awesome. Just did the almost exact thing on a "Reno" I'm doing. This one was to rehabilitate an 80 year old home from the original owners smoking for all those 80 years. The back rolling was a huge key to get a run less job over sealer, primer. and paint over the key features of an old plaster ceiling and wall. We really wanted to keep the old textured ceiling and "Plaster Crown" features. And it was the first time I'd used an airless sprayer. Preparation is critical to doing a job with no wasted labor.

    Definitely back roll a finish coat over a painted surface if it’s a wall that you always see side on, like a hallway wall. Back rolling over sheetrock is to get the paint right into the substrate. Back rolling over a painted surface is to hide the dreaded lines created by the sprayer. No matter how well we spray a surface using the best fine finish tips designed to eliminate hard-edge lines, we always seem get those visible pass lines

    When cleaning you can leave the sprayer with the sprayer on put into the prime position, pull the trigger, then switch the switch to the spray position and this will eliminate the kick in the gun from the pressure when running the water threw it that trick works at any time. Also I rapped a buggy cord around the base and head of me Graco and it holds my tip box. It's like a Tupperware box.

    I really like the spray/backroll method for walls and ceilings. The sprayer gets the product on more smoothly but the backrolling works it into the surface and evens it all out. Rolling alone can leave you with a patchwork pattern of where each roller load went. Spraying alone can leave you with uneven stripes. Applying the paint with the sprayer and then using a roller on a pole allows you to get long even strokes with no patchyness. And yes, you do need to have two people, the time span from wet to tacky is very short and there really isn't time for the person spraying to set the sprayer down and pick up the roller. Nice work

    I’m thinking about getting that same sprayer. I’m doing a flat coffered ceiling on this vaulted ceiling and usually I will paint all of the trim first then throw it up, fill in the pin holes then use a sponge brush to dab over the filled in holes but that might cause some unevenness. I like the x7 you’re using, so I’m going to try that when I’m ready. Seems to works pretty nice and you guys did amazing ❤️

    Backrolling to me is a great idea, some see it as a waste of time after you use the air-less, but as Paul says the gun can spit or you can lay an extra heavy area with paint or primer and next you know you have runs. So backrolling also serves as a 2nd pair of eyes to ensure an even coat. Great video Paul and Jordan and I loved the editing, it was nice. I 've not been guilty of using "cheap" lower grade paint unless the customer made the decision. I admit I would use "mid" grade/ price paint and get reasonable results depending on brand and or methodology just as you discussed.
    Back in the 1970's SEARS Weatherbeater paint was considered the best (at least in Southern lower MI.) I think Sherwin-Williams made it,and $10.00 per gallon was considered expensive!
    Try getting that price anywhere today.
    TIP: If paint color is secondary in decision (like painting an old shed),HABITAT for HUMANITY Restores sells recycled/recaptured paint at discounted prices. Make sure you get enough the first time though,as what they do is mix similar colors (as in ALL whites or ALL blues etc;) and same types together in large barrels then into gallon cans. You should then re-mix all your gallons into one again to gain an even tone in color.
    A very good program in IMO.
    Anyhow,great job,definitely looks excellent all around.

    Hvac Tech here. I work alot of new Co struction high rises and until recently I didn't even know back rolling was optional. All the painting crews I ever saw always back rolled. I did my bath room at a level five finish and I was worried I'd ruin my paint job by refusing to ruin the finish with backrolling.

    Question... When back rolling, you are starting with a loaded roller? Also, if you are painting by yourself would you try to back roll, or would that not work with the timing? I enjoy your videos and learn something from each one! I wish I could hire you!

    • @StudPack
      @StudPack  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thx Bruce. The roller needs to have paint on it already before you start back rolling. Not "loaded" in the sense that you would load a roller to paint a wall but definitely get some paint on it.

    You guys are turning into an entertainment channel and I love the scenes with your dad admiring how clean the paint tips are and the Tyveks. I wouldn’t be surprised if HollyWood reached out to you for tips lol

    Do yourself a favor and invest in an 18" roller setup. Jordan will be able to keep up with the spraying better, it'll be much easier on the back and shoulders cuz it takes half the time, and you have half as many chances to leave streaks. You'll love it. Great job on the painting.

    Guys sanding the primer coat in it entirely 100% is a must. The primer like on wood raise the grain and you will notice the difference it’s a deal breaker

    Great job! I had a painter spray and back roll the outside of my house years ago. It Still looks good.

    I guess everybody has their own method but I've never not back rolled :) Next time try the gun without the extension. You might get better control and use a spray shield with your other hand. Less masking prep. The dots come off glass during final clean and you're already there scraping that awful glue they use on new window stickers. Isopropyl loosens em up pretty good. Try not to hit the ceiling when back rolling the walls. You figured out a light touch on the rolling is the way to go. If it skids roll off the excess paint on a wall that hasn't been sprayed. Glad you like the back rolling, looks much better in my opinion. Interested in your approach to new construction baseboard, do you prefinish a layer then install?

      Much appreciated 👍 I think I will spray all trim once installed then cut in and roll walls

    I had to back roll the ceilings of a large 2 story house in San Francisco a couple decades ago. My neck was killing me by the end of the day

    I agree with previous comments, I would definitely invest in an 18” roller setup to expedite backrolling. Jordan, you should wear a respirator too!

    Question, did Jordan ever remove paint from the roller cover as it built up? I'm sure it started out dry, but ended up quite full and may have needed some squeezed out...?

    • @StudPack
      @StudPack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah! After backrolling for a While the roller would have a build up and I’d just put it on a wall somewhere because it’s getting covered up. Never showed it, but we did have to remove paint 👊🏼

    Another good tip to include would be always roll with the grain of the light. Thanks

  • @LDeezy662
    @LDeezy662 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something we always do on our ceilings we backroll first coat in the direction of the light and 2nd coat we backroll across the light. Not sure if it really matters or not but has worked for us for a while now
    It's not always possible like on the vaulted ceiling y'all have in that living room it more trouble than it's worth to do it that way

    i fill a bucket with waterm stick the suction hose in a nd lightly mist the floor and sweep ...the moisture makes th dust particles stick together so you can sweep an then not blow dust from the floot on the bottom of the walls.
