    Probably the greatest male/female pairing since Richard and Linda Thompson. Isobel has righteous songwriting skills. Mark has the greatest voice of the last 20 years in terms of baritone gruffness. He is our generation’s Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Jim Morrison in one smoky rasp.

      Only 57 years old. I always attributed his style to both them, he, In interviews didn't like when people compaired him with them. But, it's still true. He was a good & unique vocalist, such good works, may the man rest in peace .

    • @owenwilberforce6138
      @owenwilberforce6138 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@South3West77 - I think when I hear a voice I like, and it reminds me of other voices, it’s just me thinking referentially and reverently. Even if Mark didn’t like being connected to Morrison or Waits, I would still hear a distant connection. It has to do with phrasing and tone. All the other personality/ persona things have nothing to do with it. Jim Morrison, apart from his druggy pretentiousness and melodrama was still an awesome singer. Even Jim didn’t like his own voice though, ironically enough. So, I just measure vocal timbre and phrasing. It’s what makes both Frank Sinatra and Jim Osterberg (Iggy Pop) memorable. They knew how to phrase for maximum effect. It’s part instinct, part practice. So, people interpret as they will, and there’s just no way around it. Mark was a good natured moody dude. He came from a less than ideal childhood which explained his surly demeanor early on. Who can blame him for being generally hostile as a younger person? He drank and drugged that anger into something else. He burned through it and it burned out his constitution. Like John Cash, they had to burn out to finally find some inner peace.

    I vividly remember buying ballad of the broken seas when it came out, more out of curiosity than anything else. It’s an absolute masterpiece, the songs are haunting and the chemistry is beautiful. I was lucky to see them perform on 4 occasions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Very sad news but his legacy and beautiful songs will live on and be rediscovered by generations to come. RIP Mark ❤️

    Isobel seems very natural and not so interested in all the hype of the music business game. Lovely voice and good taste in songs. I like the gentle folk elements in her songs which also sound contemporary. "Milk White Sheets" is my favourite album of hers and has often pleasantly lulled me to sleep - especially soothing during the series of 12,000 earthquakes the last few years which has destroyed much of my city, Christchurch, New Zealand.

      John Walkey
      It was pretty much the same way each time i saw him perform, especially the first decade of this century. He seemed to prefer the shadows all the tims. Now that he's more used to standing in the spotlights the last years he becomes a more open personality and person. But i have to say, each performance i saw of his, with the soulsavers, with campell, with Greg Dulli, with his own band or completely by himself, absolutely great performance, pure professional performer and very shy. A living legend.

      Maybe just maybe it's to emphasize contrast of light and dark in their voices. She's got an airy ethereal angelic voice juxtaposed against his gruff earthy voice. Really a great performance on both parts.

  • @bX-rk2oo
    @bX-rk2oo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So much better than when we saw them live in Seattle. Well that isn't fair, Isobel was wonderful but she had to enlist the gentleman from the opening act to sing with her because after a couple of songs Mark just walked off the stage for some reason. You never know what will happen when you go to see Mark I guess.

    • @joemcbee
      @joemcbee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless he had some issue with his voice, that's a terrible thing to do. Maybe it was indicative of the reason they stopped collaborating.

    I saw them on this tour in Utrecht, Netherlands. They had a weird vibe between them. She played the cello and needed to read the notes from paper, and was really annoyed by people talking in the crowd. He looked and smiled to comfort her like a gentlemen, nothing would crack his focus. It seemed like a professional and an amateur.
    But, it was an awesome show. They both were amazing.

    • @joemcbee
      @joemcbee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She wrote and composed 95% of the music. She's the reason they're performing the music.

    • @unoriginalnamehere7350
      @unoriginalnamehere7350 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They're both longtime musicians. But for this collaboration, Isobel Campbell definitely did the majority of the work behind the scenes. It's not hard to see traces of her earlier work from Belle & Sebastian and her solo work here, just in a more mature form.

  • @eachday9538
    @eachday9538 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm no musician so correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't seem to be harmonising and rather are singing together in different octaves? Makes me think it is trying to communicate that they are representing different sides of a single narrator, or something like that. The lighting raises a question also. But that make me think it's meant to represent a deceased or distant lover? or father? The mix seems to favor Mark's voice almost to the point of drowning out Isobel sometimes, I wonder if that was a deliberate artistic choice or just how it turned out? An interesting arrangement anyway.
