Beaten up Lloyd Loom Ottoman; from trash to treasure?!

  • This old Lloyd Loom Ottoman needed a completely new lid, a reupholstery job to the top and a paint job - basically a total overhaul! Watch the video to see if I manage to take it from trash to treasure.
    You can support Holly's Design via Buy Me A Coffee, so I can spend more money on new paint colours and sandpaper and crazy bits of furniture (not coffee).

    Holly's Design was born out of a love for beautiful interiors and beautiful furniture. Having worked in interior design for several years, I saw the value in traditional, well made furniture that is built to last, over our increasingly throw away culture. When my partner and I bought our first house it was empty! Without the budget or the inclination for a massive shopping spree, I started updating old pieces that were kindly gifted to us, and finding pieces on their way to the tip that I could renovate. I loved upcycling them to suit our style, and I got so addicted I had to start selling my work to make room! And so Holly's Design was born! I hope you enjoy being a part of the journey, and thank you for watching and supporting my little venture.

    I liked the original woven trim much better. I can’t believe you pulled it off for the cloth trim.

      Fair enough! I wish I could've had a proper go at salvaging that original trim, it didn't really show properly in the video, but it was super damaged. I think probably beyond help- but perhaps as my skills continue to develop I'll be able to repair stuff like that better. Thanks for your comments.

      @johnmeigs719 Or you could just buy new trim from seat weaving supplies.

    Good job, but next time your upholstery fabric should be pulled tighter and your stapling closer together to make a smoother, unwrinkled finish on top.

      Thanks for the tip! I'm practicing my upholstery so that's really useful. Thanks for watching!

      May I please call on your expertise to help me finish my own Loom ottoman? It's in original condition. I restored the paintwork to original colour, and I've found straw stuffing under the original fabric upholstery! It's lovely, but marked with paint, sadly. Plan is to leave it in situ, and glue a piece of high density foam (cut to shape) over the top - in part to make it taller - then finish with a heavy cotton velvet. Would you say that sounds good, or should i go with a sheet of batting/wadding instead? Lastly, would I need to use dracon to get the rounded edges I seek to replicate, or will the velvet shape it, once nailed in place?

    • @leannhayes5444
      @leannhayes5444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jennytaylor3324 I would add 1 inch foam, then Dacron. Cut foam to fit lid and extend Dacron slightly past foam edge. Staple Dacron to side edge, cutting it off to keep it from going under your lid and adding bulk. Pull fabric front to back and stapling center underneath lid, then side to side stapling center. Then working stretching and stapling out to sides. Velvet is an unforgiving fabric and not easy to get smooth edges. Your staples need to be about 1/2 to 3/4 inch apart. You should also ditch that heavy hand stapler and invest in an upholstery stapler. Air staplers (pneumatic) are best, but at least an electric. It will make a huge difference.

      @@leannhayes5444 Thank you so much! Yep, not looking forward to trying to get velvet to sit right, although it's gorgeous Laura Ashley stuff I bought cheaply on Ebay. Thank God for brocade trim! Been putting the job off atm for fear of screwing it up! Was going to be using upholstery nails, but stapler you suggest sounds tempting. Are the nails hard to use accurately?

      @leannhayes5444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jennytaylor3324 I personally find nailing velvet particularly difficult to do smoothly, especially on a narrow edge. It may be best to use spray adhesive to attach the foam, then just a few tacks to hold Dacron in place while you stretch and attach the cover fabric.

  • @Jules_Pew
    @Jules_Pew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Should have carefully removed the original trim and you could reuse the tacks. More practise on upholstering required - more filling and then pulled taut. The cover doesn't match the body. Sorry, but I think this is a fail.

    • @hollysdesign
      @hollysdesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching Jules! I totally agree regarding the upholstery work, I'm practising it - I haven't done much of it before so this was a bit of a practise piece. I'd have loved to save the original trim, it didn't really show through in the video but actually it was pretty damaged in quite a few places so I think beyond salvaging. Thanks for your comments!

    • @carollawrence6461
      @carollawrence6461 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Be kind. The tacks may have been too rusty and bent to reuse.

      @@hollysdesign I didn't mean to come across as sounding mean as I'd like to see more UK upcycles. I've done a couple of ottomans myself and they can be tricky. Just because I think this is a fail doesn't mean you won't improve, which is what I hope will happen. Onwards and upwards.

    Pretty. I think a lot more tacks (or staples) would have made all the difference in the top’s edge to even out the lumpiness of the braided trim. The original trim being so rigid is what holds the fabric in tight. Beautiful old unusual piece. It almost looks like the vintage equivalent to a loose chair cushion outdoor deck or atrium box to keep them clean when not in use. Could have doubled as a sort of outdoor coffee table too.

    Good job! I like your paper plate hack (stealing that 1!), and the hinge was a clever touch. Those chains can be hard to re-attach cleanly 😐. I adore really old Loom and its vintage sister brands. I've done up 3 pieces over the years, one Spinney, 2 Loom. I found out that what makes Lloyd Loom distinct from the other wicker furniture of the day (Spinney, Kraft, Sirrom etc) is that they used paper-wrapped wire, rather than actual wicker basket material. If you run a a magnet over a piece and it sticks, it's Loom, apparently - with or without the badge - which is often missing. I can tell Loom at a glance now.
    P.S. I think gold, copper or silver highlighting on the corners and edges would really set your piece off!

      @hollysdesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your comment Jenny! The paper plates are so handy, can definitely recommend stealing that trick! That’s so cool that you’ve done a few. This was my first Loom. I’ve since done a little Loom rocking chair as well, although it just needed a repaint- no repairs. Thanks so much for watching!

    Wicker is a pain to paint. Love the color though. Very deep and rich. Next time, prime the wicker with a base coat that is mold resistant. Also, invest in a spray gun. Makes the paint go on smoothly. Can't wait to see what you do next!🤩🤩🤩

    Please could I have some info about how you cleaned the main body? I'm have my first piece of Lloyd Loom - a chair. It's absolutely filthy, so filthy the dirt will spread if I even attempted it. But I'm terrified of making it at all wet. Any advice would be so appreciated. You did such a fantastic job of this ottoman.

    • @hollysdesign
      @hollysdesign  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course! Thanks so much for your comment! I use sugar soap on pretty much everything, it cuts through grease really well. I would vacuum any dust and stuff first, and then probably mix a big tub of sugar soap with hot water and just start scrubbing. You might get through a couple of tubs! I think don't worry too much about getting it wet, you obviously don't want to leave water sitting in it but if you dry it off a bit afterwards and then leave it somewhere warm overnight I think you'll find it dries out nicely. Thanks so much for watching, and good luck with the chair!
