Why did US oil prices hit negative territory? I Inside Story

  • It's one of the world's most valued commodities. But coronavirus lockdowns have overturned the dominance of oil.
The worth of a barrel of U.S. oil fell to less than nothing on Monday
That's the first time in history, that the price has turned negative.
This means producers ended up paying buyers more than $30 a barrel to get oil off their hands.
It rebounded slightly to just over $2 the next day. That jaw-dropping slide is because the world has more crude than it can use.
And it is also about how much oil can be stored. Storage facilities and even ocean tankers are filling up.
Fears of not finding a place to put oil in May means nobody wants crude. That's led to a severe drop for West Texas Intermediate - a benchmark for U.S. oil.
Oil is traded on future contracts and prices for crude to be delivered in June are now at around $20.
The International benchmark for oil Brent crude also went down to its lowest in 18 years.
So, what will that mean for the U.S. and the global economy?
    Presenter: Richelle Carey
Bob Cavnar, oil and energy industry expert
Cornelia Meyer, CEO of Meyer Resource and an oil and gas expert
Stephen Innes, Chief Global Market Strategist, at Axicorp,a global institutional financial services company.

USO rolls over futures from the 6th to the 10th of every month, which means they don't hold any May contracts but June contracts. And they already said that they will be changing their prospectus to hold longer-dated futures. They will be in trouble if June contracts go negative (which they very well may) or when they try to roll them forward but they had nothing to do with the May contacts going negative. That was retail customers and several funds getting margin calls.

Just build a vast artic storage lake from Pykrete. It's so cold that the oil won't evaporate (in fact it would be almost solid!) and when you need it back you can just heat up the pipes and ship it south. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The more I hear about this crisis the more it feels like a message from God/the universe/nature telling us to treat each other and the environment better because we are all the same and we all need this earth to survive. This pandemic will last as long as we don't learn our lesson or at least the lesson that is trying to be taught. Covid-19 is the great equalizer

To recap, in a month, price at the pump is going to drop significantly, then as we come out of the pandemic and life goes back to a new normal, demand will accelerate, but pumping back oil to match the demand will take considerable time, and oil at the pump will reach new heights, again. Still a good idea to get those solar panels and that hybrid car.

@richard mccann Not really sure where this came from but ummm. I used to be a nuclear operative. Yes I don't like the fission industry as it is and accidents do occur. My real reason for not been a fan of the industry is economics, it's just to dam expensive. Renewables are the way to go, maybe in the future something like fusion will come but for now nope.

How can anyone ever go long oil now with the fear that their oil contract can go negative. Heck, the June contract just went down to 6.50. Never expected it to drop from $24 to $6.50 in one day.

I feel that there may be an adjustment in the global economy, I think that after all is said and done one would be committing economic suicide by waging a military war anywhere especially in the South China Sea (which is a hotspot).. That is a major problem area and that will take Oil, Guns and Trillions of dollars to settle that one. China doesn't have the capability for that (militarily) . I would be curious to know how much oil they are stocking up if any.

I find it interesting that two major points were overlooked. One is the number of people who won't be adding to the consumption/ production equation because they are dead and the percentage of the market this represents globally. The other is certain countries (like Germany) have accelerated the ban on burning fossil fuels in the vacuum created by the virus and this is part of the consumer market that will never return.

    • @bruce-ruhldesign168
      @bruce-ruhldesign168 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Germany is scrapping nuclear, especially now after the fires in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone rereleased radioactive particles into the air. A slower process, yes, but it is happening. There has been major improvements in wind generation allowing for smaller, more powerful turbines that are easily mounted to (sub)urban roof structures. We are following suit at our office in our city in the States.

    1. The 'experts' always predict doom and gloom. They did it in 2008 and yet prices had bounced back.
    2. There is a lot of buzz about renewable energy but truth is they are far off.
The electric cars are yet to be a thing and supply of lithium will limit their production.
Most of the present renewable technology is not exactly clean.
    3. Our whole technological progress is oil based. We use plastics and million different uses of oil.
So oil is not going away anytime soon. Oil industry knows it and that is why they are drilling new areas everyday.
