I miss summer vacation to Winona, remember Steamboat days, at Lakeview Park I believe, The Lakeview Drive in when it was an A&W years ago. Still have a few mugs. Was also a big deal to cross over into Wisconsin and buy fireworks , Great memories

Brice Glende We also grew up in Winona, I describe it to people who haven't been there as a bigger version of Mayberry RFD. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.

Slide labeled future Highway 61 North of Winona is actually near Twin Bluffs SOUTH of Winona.

At 46 seconds: Hot Fish Shop (owned by Lambert Kowalewski, if memory serves) - best beer-battered walleye fillets and other fried delights. Green bottle "Fish wine." One of a kind!

      Kowalewski is the correct spelling.

Wonderful Winona. We, from Arcadia would have to go to Winona to catch a train to go... anywhere. lol

It is quite wonderful. It's also ironic that when we were kids our parents took us to Arcadia to see Dr.Krumoltz (sp?) the dentist. Man, did he have some OLD drills. lol

Cool to see Sugar Loaf before it was fully quarried!

I agree, I'm impressed at the variety of things that were at her base before the area was developed into a highway concern.

It was worth watching until the 14:00 minute mark. Then I had to stop the video.

I understand that, it was my feeble attempt to show the transition to where Winona is now. Personally.....I agree.

@@tomriska4148 Winona is a husk of what it once was, as someone who lives here.

@@startledmilk6670 In some ways I understand and even agree, but, since returning here a number of years ago (gone for 19 years) I'm seeing a new vitality and a LOT of upgrades going on. I DO miss the 50s/60s but am hopeful from this point forward. Thanks for your comment.

@@tomriska4148 I am 23, I have honestly yet to meet a single person who has grown up here that doesn’t have some sort glaring problem with either substances, alcohol or mental. I deliver for erberts and gerberts and it breaks my heart seeing all of these once beautiful houses fall in disrepair because landlords don’t care to or the people that own them don’t care to keep them up. The landlord problem got so bad that they actually had to make a law to limit the amount of rented houses per block, thank god for that because most rented houses are such an eye sore. There are the new roundabouts on Mankato to combat deadly drunk driving accidents which is nice, a new classy restaurant opened near third and main, which is also nice. One of my biggest problems is the clear toxic environment for most children here, I work with a good amount of high schoolers as well and all of them are vaping, drinking, and some even doing drugs by 14-15. I’ve heard if you want your child to grow up even relatively normal in Winona they need to go to one of the private schools like Cotter and stay out of the public school district, which is sad.

@@startledmilk6670 I'm 72, but, I DO think in a, MUCH younger frame of mind. I would love to sit down with you for a coffee/whatever to see Winona through your eyes. I lived here from 1951 until I was in my 40s. Then lived in Tx and Fl. Upon my return I was thoroughly impressed at the upgrades and changes that were visible to the eye...BUT what you are talking about goes to the soul of Winona (which ultimately IS, like any other city, Winona.) I am very seldom critical, try to be analytical and logical. I'd even be up for several of us getting together....my treat. Thank you for your thoughtful response.
