    Thanks for the helpful tips! Something I always do is filter by price in order to find those sellers who just cleared out grandma’s house and don’t realize what they have. Also, I’m just poor and have to be an unwilling savvy shopper😂 Love your vids!!

      Thank you Ayana! Savvy shopping is the best shopping! I will go through pages and pages of results to find very similar items and then put the least expensive of them in my cart or save it to my favorites to get later, no use paying a premium when some people are listing things for far under "market value" ;)

    Making a list is a great thing to do. If I could go back in time and tell myself about all the things I bought on impulse and didn't wear or love, I would have saved a lot of money, which I probably would have put towards higher quality things or just more of what I really wanted. I think I would tell myself to stay away from ridiculous 70s stuff, things that didn't fit quite right, things that didn't match anything I owned already, and fancy occasion clothing that realistically I would never wear. That hot pink 80s prom dress I bought in 2009 that didn't fit is a prime offender!

      I know just what you mean! I definitely bought a few 80's prom dresses back in the beginning that never saw the light of day ;)

      I’m getting to that point, now! I’ve just started figuring out what I want to wear/like (after a year and a half?). I definitely need to make a list to figure out what I actually need.

      Haha, I'm not sure what qualifies as "crazy 70s stuff", but it's likely the exact stuff I'm seeking:)

    My tip for online vintage shopping-
    I like to try and think of how someone who does not know what they are seeling would describe the item and then type that in!

    This is a good guide, and pretty much what I do, along with thrifting. Something I have done, with suits, is buy an orphaned suit jacket, then track down the fabric to make the matching skirt and/or trousers. Its usually less expensive than buying a whole suit, and easier than tailoring an entire jacket. That being said, this strategy works better with solid fabrics in neutral colors. I've been in situations where I've spent $20 on some black wool twill to match a $40 jacket, and then paying a surreal $50 for the plaid that matches a $12 Pendleton Jacket I lucked out on at a thrift shop. Both, on balance were good deals, if you consider the suit as a whole (I also probably have enough of the plaid left for a matching waistcoat.) Its also a good strategy if your top measurements and bottom measurements are disparate enough that a standard set won't fit.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Katie! This is a most excellent way of forming suits, and is similar to what I do with vintage costume jewelry in a way, forming the sets myself instead of purchasing them all at once. I see many lovely vintage suits too where someone made the skirt into a mini at some point over the years, and making a new matching skirt would be the best option. Making a skirt is so much easier than tailoring a jacket any day ;)

      @k06kw02 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, the 80's 90's mini-cut! It is always a sad sight. I've also come across a handful of skirt lengths since moving to the UK, and can't help but look for suit jackets that would match (though it is probably a vain hope to see that 60's novelty weave made up and out in the wild)

    A shop with few or no previous sales, but where it’s clear they’ve put effort into writing an informative description, provided multiple informative photos with an in-focus ruler, and clear shipping information is generally a decent bet.
    I don’t need them to necessarily -know- what they have and use all the proper terminology, I just need them to have looked at listings from experienced stores and use that to build a useful listing so that I can determine what I consider relevant.
    I’m fine giving new shops a chance, if they assure me through their listing that they’re serious about doing this well.

    Thanks for all the great tips. I love the idea of making lists of general and specific vintage items I want, as well as some I can make myself. Your tips also take a lot of the overwhelm out of shopping on Etsy. Now one major obstacle for me is figuring out how much ease I want/need in garments. Most of my modern wardrobe is composed of knits, which I like very snug, and that doesn't translate well to things like 40's suits. I'm hoping this is something I will learn as I grow in my sewing skills.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Sarah! I was lucky to find a vintage 1940's suit in a local vintage shop as my first suit, and since I liked the way it fit I could use the measurements of that suit as a reference when shopping online. I definitely think going off the skirt waist measurement helps too, if the skirt fits and the jacket sounds a little too big, that usually means the suit will fit in my experience! And even if a jacket turns out to be a tiny bit big, that just means you can wear it over sweaters even in the coldest of weather ;)

    Have a look at Memery. Gorgeous shoes, vintage style and beautifully made. I've just had a quick look, and saw at least three pairs in different styles and shades of blue. They come at a price but you could have them mended. Hope you see this. Your videos are a great inspiration to someone who has been dithering on the verge of vintage for most of her life.

    Very nice vid as always, I am also looking to get into vintage, but the more I research, the more I also realize that I want to have vintage and modern elements combined. Do you have any tips for a vintage tomboy look? I could really use some good research materials..

      Celine Ludewig how about the androgynous styles of Chanel. The 40s wear quite a bit of masculine flair to fashion (?) x

      Thank you Celine! I LOVE a vintage tomboy look, check out old photos of Teddy Girls www.anothermag.com/fashion-beauty/8064/teddy-girls-the-style-subculture-that-time-forgot for a unique midcentury take on dressing boyishly when it was not supposed to be "allowed", so good! Also old photos of aviatrix and other more "sportwear" activities from the earlier eras usually have good borrowed from the boys sort of styling. I don't know if any books in particular unfortunately!

    This video was very helpful! I can't wait for the next video as I've always loved vintage but shopped so randomly. Have you tried Hotter shoes? I think they have it in the US and look pretty 40s. Do you think it's harder to shop vintage when one is plus sized? (Not the cotton cherry reproduction shops) x

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Lele! I have yet to try Hotter shoes, but I always see the UK retro gals sporting them so I'm sure I'll give them a try someday. I definitely think it is harder to find vintage at larger sizes, which is incredibly irritating! I do come across items on etsy in plus sizes sometimes, so it is certainly out there, but it really does seem like most of what has survived is tiny sized xs/s things. That's part of the reason I turned to sewing early on, and why I support more authentic repro companies hopefully branching out and vintage style sewing in general as great options :)

    Great video! Are there any particular reasons why you prefer to shop on Etsy over Ebay, or did I miss that in this video? Just curious. Thanks!

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! I just don't like auctions, so when I do use Ebay I only use the buy-it-now side of it. I like Etsy's interface better I guess, I like that I can "like" items to keep a (very long) bookmarked wishlist for literally years, knowing when I can afford to invest in something I have a curated selection of things from my own wishlist to browse :)

    I'm not familiar with a lot of fabric. So, is Chifon a good material for a dress? Is it easy to wash & wear? Is it see through? Does it wrinkle easy?, Thanks so much...

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chiffon, depending on the weight, is really very sheer. In silk it is lightweight, sheer, dry to the touch, and sorta fragile, and definitely more tricky to sew with than other fabrics in my opinion (and I don't think it would be machine washable, dry clean only I'd guess). In polyester it is a bit more tough/stable and would be washable, but would still be sheer and very flowy. Try searching "fabric type/name dress" on pinterest to get an idea of what a fabric looks like as a finished apparel item. For example www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=chiffon%20dress&rs=typed&term_meta[]=chiffon%7Ctyped&term_meta[]=dress%7Ctyped are the results for "chiffon dress" and can give you an idea of what chiffon does. Chiffon is a type of fabric, but it can be made out of different fibers like silk or polyester, and the different fibers give even the same "type" of fabric different properties (and a very different price too usually).
