  • Tom Karen was a British designer who's responsible for 1970s design icons such as the Raleigh Chopper, Reliant Scimitar GTE, Bond Bug and the Marble Run. But did you know that he once designed the "caravan of the future" for Eccles in 1969? Join me in discovering the story of this amazing caravan and the team behind it.
Tom Karen sadly passed away on 2nd January, 2023. This video is intended as a tribute to him and his influence on the caravan industry, which is still felt in new designs today.

I was lucky to meet Tom Karen in a visit he did to Mexico City, he contacted my dad and I to discuss a design. I have his business card, in the back he pasted a printed photo of one of his bird sculptures, a very nice person. Good journey Tom.

A terrific video - really excellent use of archive footage and stills photographs. A fitting tribute to a great designer.

Great look back at vans I remember. It’s known that we are all resistant to change, which sadly slows the pace of new design.

Have you got any more Caravan history, please? You see I am researching the entire history of UK Holidaying and I need as much history and lore as possible. I am even adding present-day history too.

I have pretty much all there is to know about the caravan industry in my archives, but there's far too much to list anywhere. You can start by looking at my website - www.classicspritecaravans.co.uk - to get the history of Britain's most famous caravan manufacturer.

@@NotAnotherWhiteBox Also do you know of any caravan/s built in the UK that are one of a kind and could be used as a caravan but also as a motor home, plus with the trait of being amphibious and even being worthy of some kind of flight. I know it's sounds ridiculous but I thought if there is such a vehicle, you would know. Anyway thanks for reading and all the best, be now.
