  • We visit the village of Scalloway, the old capital of Shetland with its castle and museum, the island of Burra, and the historic community of Tingwall. In this video we also learn about the 'Shetland Bus', the clandestine operation transporting Norwegian agents between Shetland and Norway during the Second World War.

My family and I lived on Trondra for 10 years from 1974 to 1984. I taught at the school, which was a junior high school in those days, with both a primary and a secondary department. Some years ago we visited Telavåg on the west coast of Norway, which was one of the Norwegian villages receiving the Norwegian bus shipments. (I believe Lunna House belonged to David Howarth - rather than Howard.)

Many thanks for this, and interesting that you lived on Tronda and taught at the school. Our apologies, you are quite right, it is Howarth, not Howard as can be seen from the memorial plaque on the wall of Luna Kirk.

Superb film about Shetland thank you so much. If anyone wants to really know what the Norwegian special agents had to go through there is an absolutely brilliant film called The Twelfth Man on Netflix. It is a superb film in its own right and is a true story. It begins and ends on Shetland.

I didn't realise at the time that the film you mention was filmed on Shetland. I don't know if it was the same film with Anthony Hopkins. A great film
