A gem of a radio! One of ICOM's all time best engineered rigs, and to me, they sound as nice as most rigs today, audio quality-wise.

One of the best radios Icom ever made. Any of the Pro series is a good choice.

Actually on RTTY was spitting out 125w according to the mighty fine junk (which I own too and btw agrees with my bird) and the ALC was way out. Something is misaligned there...
It’s a lot of radio for the value they have now.

I have such a Transceiver. Used it for DX-reception several years ago until the QRM got too heavy here.

G'day Andy, hope all's well mate.
I have a pro3 here and I was trying to remind myself how to get the multi-metering happening where the scope sits...then at 0:32 you press and hold the meter button and up it comes....BUT, mine replaces the Scope with the metering...it doesnt stack it like yours does in this video. I know you moved this radio on, but do you recall where in the settings it allows you to set it up to stack the scope between the freq readouts and the metering? I have looked everywhere....... Ultimately, it doesnt matter either....it's just sufficiently pissing me off to ask haha.

      Hey Azz,
Gee it's been years but I vaguely remember changing something as well to make it do that. It's not on the display tab in the main menu, there might have been a sub menu dedicated to the meter?
Otherwise try pressing F5 (set) when the main scope is displayed (multi meter not enabled) and see if that brings it up.
The PRO 3 has amazing reception and looking back on this video 40m long path propagation was amazing in the afternoon. Even with the jack job 1/4 wave vertical I was using here

A friend of mine recently loaned me an ICOM 756 Pro iii and I'm searching for someone to show me the best way to use this monster. Lots of knobs and buttons but I have little knowledge of what they all do. I have been off the air for about 3 decades and forgotten almost everything I once had learned about Amateur Radio.
I DID notice that my old Kenwood transceiver has far superior audio than the ICOM.

    • @VK2XXL
      @VK2XXL  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm not surprised, Kenwood audio is amazing! Even the older rigs compared to the modern ones today. I knew nothing about the Pro III either when I first got it, but the rig is very intuitive. I highly recommend to RTFM (Read the F#$%ing manual). Download it if you don't have it, print it out and make notes. It will enhance your experience. They are a great radio and have one of the best receivers ever. Well worth overlooking the now dated looking spectrum scope. There are lots of other videos on youtube as well of people playing around. 73 and enjoy!

@@VK2XXL Thanks for the advice Andrew. I have a PDF file on the ICOM. However, it is rather difficult understanding parts of it and the descriptions are rather generic and more knowledgeable for an 'extra' class than my 'general' brain. HI

Thanks Patrick! They are great radios! G7FEK is down right now as I've thrown up a half wave vertical for 20m due to some of the openings, but will do more experiments soon :)

Hi Thomas, yes sold for a good price. Great radio! Me personally I think the Pro 3's were better than the later model Icoms that came out, except for their top of the line mega dollar rigs :)

Hi Chris, let's be honest mate, as good as the 756 PRO 3 is, there are far better options on the brand new market for not much more money. I'm going off Australian Dollars hear, but no more than $1100 max (as of writing this, that's about 748 USD) for a nice unit in original unmarked condition and i would want original box and manual for that price as well. In the US, I would expect that to be far cheaper as far more stuff is available over there. For not much more than that you will get the IC-7300 and the Yaesu FT-710 AESS is taking off as well in popularity. The PRO 3 design is ageing and there's the issue with spare parts as well, many of which are no longer in production. Sorry about the long response but I have a few things to say as you can see!

How do you feel about the ICOM IC-910H ? Opportunity is knocking for one at $750usd ?

@@VK2XXL Okay then let me ask you this please. I want/need a radio to install on my Tugboat that it capable of full SSB Capabilities and also gives me full range of HAM bands. I want to have access to both. I will be motoring towards the west coast of Greenland this Spring and want communications for safety as well as for hobbyist adventure. Someone had told me the Xiegu G90 was a good choice as it has adjustable filter control. I want to stay under $1000 as well. If you would be so kind ( or anyone reading ) to suggest a radio for my needs. Thank You

@@NomadSurvivor You probably can't go past the Icom IC-7300. It would cost a bit more though. Otherwise go with the G90.
