It's just literally the triple digit number minus 60 ( the triple 20 ). Making it way too complicated, pulling a rule that has 0 use from thin air. 131 - 60 = 71 ( your 31 + 40 ) 157 - 60 = 97 ( your 57 + 40 ) Another way would be to explain it like this; 131 - 100 = 31 That 100 is divided by what you want to throw ( 40 ) and what you have thrown ( 60 ). 31 + 40 left to throw = 71. I mean....Don't overcomplicate things by trying to 'discover' new 'rules'. Always go for the KISS principle ( Keep It stupidly Simple ).
I thought i was keeping it simple, it was just easy for me to visualize it this way which really helped me on my checkout learning so i thought i would share to see if i could help anyone else struggling. Thanks for the comment.
@@yourdarts I just reread my comment and realized it might have come over as rude or agressive. It totally wasn't meant like that and I apologise. You're trying to share your technique for counting and I'm sure someone will have use for it like this.

I know exactly what you mean:)

Another way would be to explain it like this;
131 - 100 = 31

I actually think for most ppl adding 40 to another 2 digit number is more simple than subtracting 60 from a 3 digit number
