- ‘India is a Secular Country!’. People who often flaunt these words attribute the Secular character of India to the Constitution of India - which is technically correct. But how come? & why is that Bharat has always been a Pluralistic society accommodative of any religion since thousands of years?
From a Dharmic standpoint, ISHTA DEVATHA - which means, ‘you worship the God of your choice’ has been part of Bharatiya Civilization. SARVE JANA SUKHINO BHAVANTU - Let us all live together in peace & harmony has been a core societal value in Bharat. Then what additional value Secularism brings to the table? Is Secularism relevant & essential to Bharat?

Bharat was a pluralistic nation since centuries. But the present generation is not understanding it. Due to the fault of some selfish people who misunderstood our scriptures, we are finding faults in our ancestral knowledge. Our ancestors considered every single being as the manifestation of that Supreme entity, The Parabrahman. We should also strive hard to preserve the pluralistic nature of our Desh Bharat and make it the only nation that exhibits unity in diversity.

It's not allowed, In according to Indian constitution, U can teach any religion in school except Hinduism, If u try to teach Hinduism, U will be taken to jail.
As per my knowledge the Constitution of India forbids teaching any religion in schools any religion be it Islam or Christianity or Hinduism or even Jainism and Buddhism. They can do it in their 'religious institutions' if they want to (not Hindus but everyone else). But you see I have seen the ideologies of Jainism and Buddhism being taught in history books. I mean apart from their 'history' which the subject is actually meant for, they also teach their basic ideologies ( talking only about Jainism and Buddhism ... to some extent also Sikhism and Sufism ). But that has never been the case with the Vedic religion despite the fact that it is the most ancient religion of Bharat and the foundation of Bharat in every respect has been laid on the principles of this very religion or at least has an essence of it in itself.@@NoThing-ec9km

The problem for today’s Bharath is when we talk about pluralism it means every thing is a manifestation of self and hence all are equal. Some thought the same when they encountered the Abrahamic system as another form of pluralism without understanding that Abrahamic concept itself will kill the very essence of pluralism. However we should also give credit that the same concept of pluralism had given strength to some others not to embrace Abrahamic religion because of its Ill effect.

Thanks for another very interesting and educational documentary. As I was watching the video, my thought went to this question: Why institutionalized religions where created in the first place? By answering this question, one can come to the conclusion of why secularism has been adopted in democratic republics. Because, secularism is exclusive ONLY in a democracy. And this is why it has been instrumental in the West. But, Bharat stems from a whole diffetent background in which spiritual and cultural pluralism is the basis of its society. I think that due to the past agressions of other religions in India, in the present it presents secularism as "freedom to choose religious beliefs". Because, in the past Bharat has been very vulnerable to foreign invaders who tried to convert and force people into their religious belliefs. And Bharat wasn't a republic, it was a nation divided in different states, but no central government. When Bharat became a republic, which was very recent considering its antiquity, the central government adopted a model of democracy based on other democracies as well. These are my thoughts, maybe I'm wrong, but is the way I can understand this topic.

This happened several years ago during a college excursion with a stopover to an ancient Hindu temple. At the threshold one of our Muslim student was prohibited from entering. This has happened many times in Big n Famous Hindu temple.
Popular is when Yesudas was prevented from Guruvayor temple.

The problem is indian central or state govts are not secular... It separates people in the name of minority by differentiating religion... Minority law is corrupted by religious racism...govt/court needs to reevaluate whom to put in minority basket

Else, I was of the opinion that it is something we as individuals need to manage to keep the harmony of the society.
