The voice of Jessye is unbelievably beautiful, and she is technically perfect. I love her art and I am thankful for her dedication and respect to the classical music!
Thanks for sharing. Miss Norman was, is and ever will be a goddess. Her beautiful voice, her timbre, her musicality, diction and knowledge of the languages she spoke and sung are incredible. A real diva.
Yeah ..plus she doesn't sound like a fog horn when she goes into her upper register which is something that always grated with Marilyn Horne on me. She has a lovely upper register its still bright for such a dark lower reg ...and she can sing pianissimo up there.
This is a far better performance than the 1982 one on another channel. I heard her live in this opera at the Chicago Lyric and her voice simply flowed out and filled that huge house. She also captured the competing emotions of the aria and the entire role perfectly.
Jesssye Norman once said, and I think that it was in an interview or Master Class. "When you sing, don't worry about anything. Just lean back, open your mouth and sing". Well, this is what she always did, which brought her to the top in the dramatic soprano class, not always perfect, but impressive. She had a great career and for us a great loss. This Divinites du Styx is memorable, and so is she.

Erika Keuling......I Have to disagree. While I love Sylvia Sass in the coloratura roles, she does not show well in this. Her lowest notes are inaudible and her high Bb's are incredibly shrill... which is unusual for her. I adore her in Macbeth sleep walking scene and many other arias I don't like this one.... she does sing it with a commanding presence though..
I saw her in this opera in the early 90's in Chicago and she was not particularly effective. Some of this may have been the ridiculous staging which had all of the principles being mimed by dancers following them like shadows which just was distracting. However, her voice at that po0int simply did not have the penetrating sound that one usually associates with her singing.
