fun fact: when this came out, the singer Marian Gold was still working as cooks mate in his hometown in Germany. it got a lot of radio airplay and so one of the cooks said: "son, they are playing your song all day long" and fired him. so the singer was fired because his boss didn't want him to waste his career peeling potatoes
The boss said " Du bisch zu gut du arroganter Arsch.
The members live in Berlin and the singer Marian Gold in Münster in Germany. He is involved in social projects and takes care of his family, but they all live quite quietly :)
agreed - 40 years onwards and current music trash like pink, miley siphilus etc are 10,000 rungs lower as far as REAL talent goes, compared to the 80's musicians... Stay Blessed..
Because actual talent made it big because more people voted to spend actual money for the records based on actually liking them than voted for a puerile TV entertainment show because they were sucked in by the hype and fomo? Just guessing, I could only afford to buy one or maybe two singles per week in the 80's, but voting a few pennies while sitting on my ass using my phone appears easier nowadays. I don't bother doing it, never have, but it still has the appeal of being simple and inexpensive. BTW I still have all the records I bought and a record player so i can listen to any of the music I originally thought was worthwhile. About 5% of it gets ignored, the rest gets a listen at least once a year, much more for some great songs! I feel like I got value for what I spent back in the day. Personally I would rather be able to still listen to the media I bought for as long as i like than have a stream removed because some beancounter exec decides it isn't making enough revenue. I grew up being able to do that and simply don't like companies taking away what I paid for because they already got my money and don't care if I get value or not so long as they get their profit.

The phrase "Big in Japan" from the 1984 song by the band Alphaville refers to the idea of being famous or successful in a distant or foreign place, especially in Japan, while remaining unknown or struggling elsewhere. In the context of the song, it symbolizes escaping reality and fantasizing about success or a better life in a faraway place. Japan was chosen because, during the 1980s, many Western artists and bands who didn't achieve mainstream success at home were surprisingly popular in Japan. The song itself is more about yearning for a better future and dealing with personal struggles (such as love and addiction), using the notion of being "Big in Japan" as a metaphor for an idealized escape or sense of hope.

I wanna deplore any music critics, reporters all of whom dared to call Alphaville the 1 hit wonder band, this song was literally extraordinary, should have been promoted much harder than only Forever Young
@Luiz Claudio Lemos Yes, IMHO every person has more or less delusions of being famous and successful somewhere out of the real life. The lyrics, the synths, everything of this song is beyond time. It will ever be actual. Adding the stunning voice and brutal beauty of Marian makes it one of a kind.

What can I say about Alphaville? Really love their sound got into their music whilst travelling around the world living out of a suitcase...and they still stimulate my senses 35 years later
I don't know how this band come to the idea of this song. 👏👏👏 I lived and studied in the city where this band comes from...the small, beautiful and clean city of Münster.💚 Six years in Münster and Münster is my home town in Germany. Up to this day 10.06.2023, I am still playing this song loud and in a row in my Studio. The sound is so great and timeless, it makes you just wanna dance. The voice from Marian is crystal clear and energetic. I mastered the lyrics and any day I am in Japan. I will go to a park full of people, stand in the middle and will sing this song acapella as loud as possible. I will be 'Big In Japan'😎

Discovered this song on accident when TH-cam music put together a playlist for me. And now I can't get enough of it. It's on repeat pretty much every day. 😁 Awesome tune.

This song has been huge in Greece literally ever since it came out. I was 5 or 6. And I've been dancing and singing to it all my life since then. To me it's perfection, it's what music should be like, I can't imagine anyone not liking it.

1:47 "neon on my naked skin...passing silhouettes of strange illuminated mannequins. " Always loved that line.
But what does it mean?
@@sonicfoxxmusic4281 it means you imagine the image and create your own answer.
I readed over there that the center of this song is the heroine, he is not gay he is waiting for his dealer (man)
@@sonicfoxxmusic4281 He´s describing the atmosphere. he's looking to score heroin in a big city (Berlin) at night so he's passing by neon shop signs and shop windows

Lyrics:
Winter's cityside, crystal bits of snowflakes
All around my head and in the wind
I had no illusions that I'd ever find a glimpse of
Summer's heatwave in your eyes
You did what you did to me, now, it's history I see
Here's my comeback on the road again
Things will happen while they can
I will wait here for my man tonight
It's easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan, tonight, big in Japan, be tight
Big in Japan, ooh, the eastern sea's so blue
Big in Japan, alright, pay then I'll sleep by your side
Things are easy when you're big in Japan
Oh, when you're big in Japan
Neon on my naked skin
Passing silhouettes of strange illuminated mannequins
Shall I stay here at the zoo? Or should I go
And change my point of view for other ugly scenes?
You did what you did to me, now, it's history I see
Things will happen while they can
I will wait here for my man tonight
It's easy when you're big in Japan

The 80s was perfect. Musicians were able to express themselves through the music. I would never trade growing up in the 80s for anything.
Can you tell one nice memory? I wanna know what it was like
Not to mention you could express fascination and interest in other countries without someone digging through everything to find reasons to get offended.
This is a rare time (in my opinion) where the music video goes perfectly with the song
I wanna deplore any music critics, reporters all of whom dared to call Alphaville the 1 hit wonder band, this song was literally extraordinary, should have been promoted much harder than only Forever Young
This is a truly masterpiece.

80s music was rich, opulent, diverse, deep, stunningly creative, melodic, full of rhythm and.... fun!
And mysterious. And magical. And romantic. And dark.
This lyrics are incredibly PERFECT, still today.
The 80s are the biggest treasure of the electronic music. The fundamentals of the genre.

Лучший (Big in Japan - слог)
