7:58 It's the hot cut melted EPP foam that has hardened you want to remove. But not all of it where it's thin and smooth close to the painted top surface which using a razor knife sounds & feels the same as the thicker areas cutting through it. Most people will cut right through the 1-2mm thin area too often IMO as the hard melted EPP foam spots can be very brittle and hard to cut through. Folded or rolled 250 grit wet and dry sand paper allows fine abrasion control with no surprises on hot cut foam and wet sanding the hinge line only removes the high hard spots first, then the harder lower melt layer causing the highest resistance without risk of cutting through the thinner soft foam cell sections and top you want intact. A diamond file is even better if you are carefull. And getting it just right with needed strength on hot cut EPP usually requires additional steps that Shoe Goo will finish off several different ways where the more steps and time spent the better the end result... that a set of proper hinges would have solved in minutes ;-)
Sonic models is using hinges now with their super tough EPP and Bixler did it a while ago with EPO.... so we won 't be buying too many more foam hinged wings as competition takes foam planes to the next level. Getting the hinges right is a major pain and waste of time.

Wow what a strong wind, kudos for the attempt. Good insight about the hinges and control horns. Might be worth picking up for the right price looks almost indestructible.

glad you've reviewed this I ordered it last week and then realized there wasn't a single review on youtube! you're the first. :)

I like the stick , I wonder if the ends touching without the motor or the flat part like a beak when joining

You gave me a great laugh. I haven't been slope soaring so don't know about that. But, I have built the Lighting with a motor and been flying it for 6 months now and I love it. I still use the tiny motor it came with (they call it C20) but went with a 7*6 apc prop or a folding prop, and went with a 3s lipo rather than the anemic 2s they suggest. CG is very near where the leading edge meets the fuselage. Mounted the esc outside on top of the fuse for cooling and to give room inside the fuse for the lipo battery. I also laminated the fuselage and tail with copy shop laminate and that makes it super strong. The wings are kind of floppy but I have not needed to reinforce them even though I do very tight loops.
Mine flies wonderfully (please check out my videos). It does not roll as well as a delta wing but loops are awesome and it is just fun and I can keep it within a football field, especially when I want to fly it at night. It is a fun, well flying wing.

Great effort with that wind amazed you struggled so long but a long drive we all need positives i agree if the" ridge ryder "cannot penetrate that "gale" none of what you loaded up would either so thanks for the vid certainly not boring its all learning for me and i really admire you modding that DW lighting (lightening) wing and keep up the aeronautic experiments... enjoyed

    Haha, OK you've convinced me!!!
I will NEVER EVER get an UN-POWERED glider!
great vid thanks for sharing! *-D

Last one, last one. thanks for your trying in heavy winds, don't know until you try. Now I know what too much looks like.

Picasim app is a very realistic simulator to get some experience in slope soaring

You can also cut away some of the foam hinge to ease tension on the control surface. Also lay a book or something on the control surface folded back to stretch the hinge material. Go to "Twisted Hobbies" web page and look at their instructions on epp foamies. They have really good ideas.

That was a rough go but you did well to keep trying and yes too much wind. In the bright side that's a beautiful spot with nice grass to land on. I live in the desert and its nasty! Did you have any success with this glider?

Not much. You get what you pay for, as they say. I did have a lot of fun there with other planes though.

nice place to fly. Lucky its within driving distance. I'd have to get on a plane for a few hours to get to the ocean.

ok..... the problem is , in this case, that the playns that you try to fly, are NOT made for this wind.....
this playns perform very well with winds above 5Km/h and under 15Km/h, combined with some termal
for this wind, witch I think is above 25Km/h, you need a difrent profile of the wing ,airfoil, speed airfoil, and theat will be considerably finer, AND the wing needs to be strong and crusty, more like an hotliner
aniway,, I will like some mesurmens of this playn

use laminate. I did a bonsai and it is slick and super strong. it isnt heavy either.

You are a patient man (apart from the odd grammar hiccup, haha) but when you travel a bit to get to a spot, you got to make it worthwhile, good on you....

tip to keep doors shut on models use old servo arms as catches. better than rubber bands.

This is a great kit at only $45 US. It makes an awesome slope soarer in light to medium winds. Cut the alieron every 2cm, If your not familiar with flying planks then this may not be the kit for you.

On this receiver I cut the trace on the PCB between the last two VCC pins, so that the last pin can be used to externally sense the full battery voltage. For this case though, I want to reconnect them so I can sense the internal voltage of the receiver itself.

    Try this in your browser.
Windyty.com and you can get a detailed weather situation at Raglan (where my brother lives) and after you maneuver to the exact location could you make note of the co-ordinates and send me a reply so I can see where you are flying. Thanks.
    Regards from New Plymouth.

You need more nose weight to penetrate the wind to create lift.

why banggood used this video is beyond me... lets just all alter are planes to look as stupid as this guys why buy something that don't work at all... if I had to tape a stick on all the planes I buy I would get outta the hobby

    • @iforce2d
      @iforce2d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah it's pretty weird. My experience with the EPP eagle fuselage constantly breaking at the slightest touch made me not want to use the fuse of this one which is the same style so I threw it away. Since I didn't want a motor a stick was all that was needed to move the CG forward.

May I say I don't like the design of this plane. I would easily design a better one... Hey, wait a minute, I've actually done that (RC Very Easy Plane V.E.P.).
