Any ideas on why mine grew like palm trees. There about 8ft high. Have always saw them growing along the ground like you show and also have a couple that do grow along the ground
I have a silver saw thats just three years old i purchased as a three gallon plant that have a good 8 inchs of trunk they grow fast when u feed them straight nitrogen fertilizer
My palmetto tree is around 25 feet tall it was not on my property when I moved here 40 years ago. So according to you this tree would be thousands of years old. I think you need to get back to work and start over. Palmetto’s grow very fast I know I have more on my property then all the land owners in a 2 block area. I have to pick up hundreds of limbs a year that fall on my cares boats house all over the yard terrible job just picking them up. Endangered no way they are all over the state.
Hi ivey duke, I think you are referring to sabal palms (Sabal palmetto), the state tree of Florida, which are a different species from saw palmettos (Sabal etonia)

Me too. Do tell
Are they in the shade? They will grow vertically if searching for sunlight. And will grow much faster, too.
Are the green ones edible and will they ripen in a brown bag?
I've never tried to eat a ripe one, but I hear they taste bad. I'm not sure about ripening them. - Dustin
Gosh! This is cool! I’m monitoring seeds I sprouted and they are certainly slow growing! Now I know it’s normal. Thanks for the info!

Palmettos limit their growth!

Pretty amazing, right? Biological field stations allow for decades-long research projects like this. -Dustin

@@ArchboldExpeditionsI believe that saw palmetto is Serenoa repens, not a Sabal species
Sabal etonia is commonly known as scrub palmetto
We use inches and feet in America!!!
