@David Winehouse Actually, they do not. Police have to abide the road rules the same as anyone else. If they have any equipment that is NOT stock, it must be tested for compliance under the Design rules for that vehicle.

Here in Australia we had a case of a motorbike cop who pulled over another motorcyclist for having a camera on his helmet, the officer fined him because it "Altered the design and safety features of the helmet"
The Rider took it to court, and his lawyer discovered, that the officer had...... Helmet cameras, that was not stock to the helmet, and it was not passed by the relevant design legislation authority.
He got the fine overturned, and the Police scrambled to change the rules to allow Helmet cameras, if it does not physically make changes to the helmet's frame.

So, assuming the cop realized it came stock with the upon seeing it up close, he threw out a joking "want to help me take it off" poking fun at the mistake. This is why you can see how stunned the driver is when he realized the cop literally didn't know what a Tesla model 3 is, and doubled down on having no mounted monitors.

You are aware that most in dash navigation systems are android based and have similar if not identical capabilities as your cell phone. Movies, music, games, phone calls. How are those any less distracting then this. It really comes down to the responsibility of the driver to know when and where it is safe to utilize such technology. I agree with you using such devices while one should be paying attention to the road is a bad thing. And that includes law enforcement.

@@mac1cam idk how to tell you this but I've been riding Uber for 7 years, and I'd say like 1 in 10 was a Tesla. My point being a significant portion of cabs in the community routinely policed for traffic are unfamiliar to the officer. That would be a dumb or at least lazy cop in my books.
It seemed that way yes but it was window dressing to make the observer feel better. The continued questions were investigative questions designed to find something that he could cite the man for. When he realized he had nothing, yes he apologized and let him go. He pulled over the car which has identifying marks as to make and model. The cop asked what kind of car it was. Really, he didn't already know what kind of car it was when he stopped it. Yes he may not have known about the full technology of the car but simple observation upon the stop would have told him everything he needed to know. For example the lack of a traditional speedometer? No they are trained in certain tactics and behaviors to mitigate liability and still collect revenue.

@@samanthadavis5819 I've had bad experiences with cops but I just had one let me off for driving way too fast. He was pretty chill about the whole situation and just basically told me to drive safely. Good thing too because my probation ends soon and I get my full open licence back. And the cop didn't even say anything about any of the numerous modifications of questionable legality. I could have been screwed but good guy cop pretty much saved my licence.
Having said that, I have also been beaten by 6 cops for no reason and they attempted to pin some bullshit charges on me. Nothing stuck though. Cops are people at the end of the day. A lot of them are shit but some are pretty cool. Can't tar everyone with the same brush. Just be smart about how you talk to cops and if they're reasonable you'll be fine. Just like dealing with any other people.

Actually, states can ban any item they want, even if the car comes with it stock. And people actually do import cars that aren't street legal in the U.S. and drive them around. If that cop wanted to be a dick, he could've made life hard for the guy. Even if the car was legal he could've made the guy go to court to prove it.

@@MrMundo3d he had reason to believe the driver was using a prohibited device while driving, upon learning he was wrong, he apologized and expressed interest in learning about the screen, possibly so he could make more informed decisions in the future. I didn't say he was a friend, but this is definitely the friendly nature in which police officers should act.
