That was a hell of a lineup!
Mob Rules is perfect from the very first note to the last.

To this day, Vinnie has the best live drum sound I’ve ever heard. His playing is pure power and finesse - an amazing combination!

I’ve been watching Vinnie Appice for the last year or so on TH-cam. I’m absolutely blown away at how funny, articulate, generous, and humble he is!!! If I had to define heavy metal with one song, (no small feat) it would be “Falling Off The Edge of the World.” Mr. Appice crushes it on this piece!! And I’ve been following Sabbath and DIO since the late seventies! Thank you so much Vinnie for your gift of playing and story telling!!

What a great interview! This was perfect timing, as I just completed my run-thru - of all of my Dio records. Vinny is a gem. Thank you gentleman! That was not a wasted hour. 🤘🏼😎

In my opinion....the most underated metal drummer of the world! He's one of my 5 drummer influences that made me play drums since 1990

Hi, great show nice to listen to. One suggestion - ask about the making of Live Evil. It was recorded from 3 places - 4 shows. 2 were filmed, where are the reels? The song Heaven and Hell comes from the filmed show, but where are the other songs from? Ronnie said that pretty much of Live Evil was recorded in the stuDIO, how much? Ronnie had solo album contract from Warner, when he got that? I've understood that he was going to do solo album, but not with actual band but friends from music business. When that changed? When he was fired? During summer? Before August tour dates? When Ronnie and Vinny recorded demos with Jake E Lee? What songs? Where are they now? Stay safe - keep on rocking!🤘😷🤘

Geoff Nicholls is the most underrated and uncredited musician from the Dio era. I have it on great authority that he was a big influence and arranger for those 2 albums but denied any credit. He must have been good or else he wouldn't have been there 25 years. Check out Geoff Nicholls Archive on TH-cam as there are more unheard releases coming up this week coming to coincide with the H&H/Mob Rules box set release.

@35:55 - I definitely remember an interview with Ronnie James Dio in Hit Parader or one of those music magazines back in the day. Yes, he hated that he was credited as ‘Ronnie Dio’. He also ranted about Geoff Nichols getting higher billing than Vinnie Appice, saying that his dog could play better keyboards!

    • @LEEFORDJAGG

Geoff Nichols helped Vinny learn the songs whilst the rest of the band adjourned to The Pub. Geoff was a consummate musician r.i.p

I have the Axis album! 'It's a Circus World'. excellent late-70s hard rock, top drumming, inventive guitar playing, catchy songs, great production... i love it. great sort of metallic power trio. in fact, it includes one of the only ballads within the metal realm that i consider honest and heartfelt: 'Train', kinda like Rush or Derringer (yep, Vinny played on the masterful 'Sweet Evil') meets Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash. all in all, Vinny's one of my top influences as a drummer, has been for the last...hmmm... 40 years! he's really heavy and hard-hitting, but he's always letting the song breathe. and his tom rolls are one of a kind. cheers!

Great interview! Since you mentioned the Holy Diver cover, you should do a side by side comparison with the Rainbow Rising album cover. A lot of similarities. I always wondered if Ronnie did that on purpose.

Great player. Maybe the greatest feel of all heavy rock drummers. No bigger compliment. There’s one fill he throws into the middle of a verse in “One Night In the City” I stole and used in a song - a country ballad. If it sounds good it is good!

Tony Martin was in Black Sabbath up till Dehumanizer. There are some rehearsal tapes with Martin singing some of that material. One of the songs is off a GZR band. Master of Insanity

RJD left briefly during Dehumanizer period and Tony Martin was brought back in to record lead vocals. I am not sure if Cozy Powell was still on the drums during T.M’s brief reappearance.

When I play that weird, spoken part on Shame On The Night backwards, I hear “my God got crucified”, plain as day. It had to have been deliberate; possibly Ronnie just wanting to shut people up who thought he was evil or a Satanist. Not that Ronnie was even a Christian, but maybe it was his way of saying, “Yeah, not what you expected, eh?” That’s always been my take on it.

Bill was best for Sabbath, Vinny is a mediocre drummer (steady) but mediocre comparing both drummers, thank God he didn't join Ozzy for the Blizzard Of Ozz album.
