It’s one to leave at your place of work or home to lock up your bike rather than carry around with you. If it’s at least 10% the value of your bike than worth it. Or if you have a pannier bags then carry it in there?

  • @jffydavy5509

Hiplok has the DX1000, same design as the D1000, but significantly larger. The DX1000 size is very similar to the Skunklock is more expensive. The DX1000 cost $50 more than the D1000. I don't carry my locks on my commuter bike so weight isn't important. I leave my locks on the bike stand where I lock it every workday. I use a large chain lock, two U-locks and one cable lock. Even with the power tools it will take a significant amount of time to cut all the locks.

What about the Abus locks? I've got multiple of them. When I go camping and have to store my bike outside I normally use a minimum of 5 locks, all top grade ABUS locks 2 chains and 3 U locks. always unto something solid. It even deters me as the owner with keys in hand to unlock the bike. It is a game to lock it as best as possible too.

I do like Abus locks. They have just released a new one that is 'grinder' resistant as well. I'll get my hands on one (eventually) and report back. The more of a hassle it is for someone to get through your locks, the less likely they'll try. I agree it is really cumbersome though.

It's a great lock... as long as it's not up against angle grinders. Angle grinders... it's gone in a few minutes tops. So I would use it as a secondary lock in shady areas. Where I live, the bike theft isn't so high, so it's OK to use if I'm just going in and picking up something quick and coming back out. Add an audible alarm and GPS tracking. Of course... if you have a cheap ebike, it may not matter and with insurance you're fully covered - so this lock is fine.

It does not help to have a bomb proof lock if it is locked to something that is easy to cut. One time I saw a box car parking outside a local train station (with lots of surveillance cameras around, they did not care) and two guys coming out with angle grinders and cutting both ends of a bike rack and just lifting the whole rack with all the bikes attached into the back of the box car, and driving off.

A lot of riders like the disc lock with motion alarm. I haven't tried it. I prefer to use a more light duty approach, assuming a dedicated and professional thief is going to get by whatever 300 dollar lock system I could use. A lighter and easier to use system like handgrip locks should deter the "not so serious" thief. Insurance companies charge high rates to cover the replacement value of a stolen bike, so as long as you can prove you made some attempt to secure it, you shouldn't have any issues with a claim.

If i get a Skunk lock i will remove the warning and the branding if possible. The thief doesn't need to know it's going to damage their tools and cause a horrible smell. Plus 1 alarm should be more than enough. That would be the main lock. No thief is going to cut the bike itself. That's just dumb. If they want to sell it afterwards they would want it intact. That's just never the goal with stealing a bike. It's a lose lose for both the thief and more so the owner. I do like smell puke smell from grinding the lock. On paper it's going to slow the thief considerably as they won't expect it to smell so bad. Then you have the lock that's already a tank to cut plus it damages the disc the more you keep cutting making you waste even more time. The alarm would already be annoying constantly making noise. Now if they can this idea and apply it to the Lite Lock then you have stupid good look. At that point i wouldn't mind spending big money for a couple. Protect your investment.

The moment when you buy a lock that is heavier than your bicycle.
When you leave your bike on a public place with a lot of people you don't need the best lock. Nobody turns up with a grinder when the bicycle is placed in front of a restaurnt full of people even if the grinder needs only 30 seconds to cut through. People here in Switzerland would call he police or even talk to the guy/girl. That happened to me when I had to cut off my bike because the key had broken off.

There are Videos online of people using grinder in public at day.
I'm from Germany berlin and unfortunately i saw many times people doing bad things in public and nobody tried to stop it.
But I guess the you must be very unlucky that someone use a grinder here in public. It don't happen so often. Most of the time they use leverage to open the lock or any other kind of brute force.

$300 for a lock is ridiculous when i only paid $550 for the Ebike

The lock is still worth it, especially if you get a newer more expensive ebike in the future.

You don't need those best locks for your bike. But you still need a decent lock.
