    Great job! But you've forgotten to do one important thing. What makes American English different than others is the flap t as in words like daddy, matter, letter, letter, stutter. I would appreciate it if you do a video on that sound because you guys explain the sounds in a really great understood way. Thanks!

      +Dan Ni , we didn't forget about the /t̬/ and /ʔ/ as well as other stop sounds. This is a huge topic and we're planning thoroughly for it.

      Sounds American well contrasting pairs is great, and I find that every little detail you guys explain is a huge thing because there are some things that I've never had learned before like this last video the "m" sound and another that I did know the sound but I didn't know how to make it, nobody taught me that and I've been learning English for 2 years! I just wonder if you could post more videos frequently! Man believe me this is such a great job!! keep doing what are you doing! and thank you so much!

    Many Spanish speakers pronounce the letter m at the end of a word like a n, except if the following word starts with a p or b

  • @AllanEduardo42
    @AllanEduardo42 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello there! ^^
    Thank you again! I have a question concerning the typical mistake 3: in the other 2 nasal sounds ('n' in 'can' and 'ng' in 'long'), is it important not to distort the precending vowel too? I already watched the corresponding videos and nothing is said about it. This is specially important to me because I am a portuguese native speaker, and that kind of "distortion" is done all the time before any nasal consonant.

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Allan Eduardo Hello there! :)
      You're very perceptive and you are correct!
      All the nasal sounds tend to affect the pronunciation of preceding vowels - it's called "nasalization." This can more troublesome for native speakers of certain languages and it tends to distort tense vowels more so than relaxed ones (the tense vowels get distorted so that they sound like the relaxed vowels).
      To make sure that you pronounce these vowels correctly before the nasal sounds, first, say the word/syllable WITHOUT the nasal sound - just remove it. This way you'll be able to hear what the vowel should sound like, without the nasalization. Then add the nasal sound back after the vowel. When you make the vowel this time, try to make it fully, without reducing it, and do not relax it before making the following consonant. It also needs to be long, as the nasals are voiced consonant sounds so they make the vowels before them longer.
      Hope this helps, thanks!

    Hey, I'm having a difficult time to pronounce the vowel sound ' æ ' when it is followed by nasal consonant. It does not sound like a pure æ sound. So would you make a video on that topic, please? That sound is baffling for many non native students in my opinion.
    Thank you 🌹

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, the /æ/ sound is slightly different when it's followed by nasal consonants. When you pronounce words like "band," "bank," and "camp," your mouth can be opened less wide and your tongue can be placed a little higher. Be careful though, there's still a difference between the /æ/ and /ɛ/ sounds even when they are followed by nasals (compare: "man" and "men"). Rachel has a great video on this topic: th-cam.com/video/GxGWdoau7vc/w-d-xo.html

    I’ve heard that m is nasal in American. But that nasal. Like everytime. In Russian, I say it with my lips like Bb

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point! There's a subtle, but quite noticeable difference between the American /m/ and the Russian /m/ sounds. Phonetically speaking, these are allophones (different variants of the same sound). In both languages we block the airflow with our lips, that's true. The difference is in what happens next 😉: In Russian you push your lips apart releasing the airflow through your mouth and your nose. In English you direct the airflow through your nose and only them push your lips apart. If you listen to the examples in our article really close you'll hear the difference: soundsamerican.net/article/consonant_sound_m_as_in_map#pronunciation_exercise_for_the_m_sound

    • @SoundsAmerican
      @SoundsAmerican  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the /m/ is pronounced with your mouth closed. It's a voiced sound, so you have to vibrate your vocal cords.
