How many months before they should be chipped? I ask because I once found a black lab puppy with no collar. I took him to the nearest animal shelter, where it was discovered he was chipped and they were immediately able to reunite him with his family.

You're not kidding about the usefulness of tattoos, my old lad had one. A couple years after I had him, a story came up locally. Someone else with a litter of GSD puppies had their home broken into during the night and the puppies were stolen (they left the mother). The local police got onto the local radio, told people to look out for puppies with tattoos in their ears. The pups were returned and back with their mum before the end of the day.
@@Look_What_You_Did There's one of these types of stories from 2023 - Vancouver Island Canada - 10 eight week old German shepherd puppies stolen from a backyard on the Monday. The backyard was broken into. Mum was not taken. 5 puppies were recovered and returned by Wednesday, because they were dropped off at the SPCA. I was only having a casual look so I don't know if more were returned later. No idea if this is what the OP was referring to, but it does suggest that a story like that could be mostly true. Right breed, right crime, a locked door broken into, mum left, made a bit of a splash in local news because it was unusual, Mounties made comments to media, and many puppies returned within a couple of days. There's also cute video footage of them back with mum - 5 puppies could be a whole litter, so quite possible somebody might think that was all of them. 10 live puppies from one pregnancy is crazy. Check check check check. You're welcome.
My elderly chiweenie (who has always had a bad attitude) raised his head off the couch for about 5 seconds, then put it back down and closed his eyes.😅

Our neighbor fostered a GSD, such a whiny, concerned boy. Now they have a husky/pit mix....she has barked twice in 3 months & heard her whining once, because they didn't throw the ball fast enough to suit her.
@@henriettachamalidou1690 The dogs were both fosters, being helped to get healthy and any necessary training before a better home is found. The GSD was highly anxious but improved greatly. True, but I think the best way to ensure your doggie returns to you if lost is to you combination of methods. Personaly I go with microchip and my phone number sewed onto my doggos collar. Indeed, ideally use both tattoo and chip registered on you. If an animal only has a chip, you won't know unless you have access to a scanner, and even then, the pesky little things can migrate over time. With a tattoo, you can instantly see that the animal has an ID, granted, the tattoo can be difficult to read at times, but it's still a visual indicator telling you that the animal is less likely to be without human. yes, that’s common with popular breeds with light enough fur to dye! I’ve seen a golden retriever with a rainbow tail before 🥰
