6S NiMH Speed Test (FAiL!): Brushless Tamiya DT-02 Sand Viper 1/10 2WD Buggy RC Car!

  • First FAiL with the Carson 8T Tamiya Euro-Cup Brushless System and the Tamiya DT-02 Sand Viper! This Tamiya DT-01-02-03 Buggy series was going too well I think, with six previous problem free speed tests, so maybe it was just about time something else happened.
    I tried out another NiMH battery after this test, but with the same results, so I will spare you for that video. I also tried out a 2S LiPo with the same result, so the NiMH wasn't the problem. And then just before giving up I tried out a last battery, another 2S LiPo, and the motor/ESC suddenly worked for 3-4 minutes! Watch that video and pleasant surprise here: • 2S LiPo Speed Test (SU...
    The 41 kph (approx. 25 mph) in this video is of course NOT full speed. The short explanation is that the motor/ESC kept activating some kind of cut-off or protection system. I've had this one out running in the spring and summer off road without any trouble at all. But not on this day. The plan is of course to get it fixed somehow, and then also try it out with a 3S LiPo.
    Anybody knows what is going on? Help would be appreciated.
    Here it is running on a 7.2v 3600 mah 6S NiMH Battery with full Tamiya ball bearings, Tamiya 19T Steel Pinion and an 8T Carson Dragster 3 Tamiya Euro-Cup Sensorless Brushless Motor (stock is ball bearings, 17T alloy pinion and a 27T brushed silver can). The Louise E-Rocket Street Rear Tires are fitted for this test (no gear ratio change).

    Ahh, Mikael, we all have these days! Looks like an issue with the ESC, it was not happy today! But tomorrow, after a rest and a reboot, all will probably be OK. This has happened many times to me too, must be gremlins! Great show, nonetheless, always good to hear you my friend! Take care and take it easy! :O)

      Yeah, so strange. And a little frustrating when out in the field with cameras and all and no time (because of work) to change electronics and reshoot it all again. Well, but that’s the name of the game of this hobby 😅 Hope it was just a glitch. Will reset everything and try again. Maybe without cameras at first, he he. Hope it will scare the gremlins away 😅😅 Thanks a lot for stopping by and listening to my failure, he he.

    Just man flu? Don't underplay it mate that is really serious! Hope you are better soon. Is it just a connection problem with battery? You did say you had a Tamiya plug. Not the best. Anyway these are the trials and tribulations we must face sometimes. Cheers for now :-)

      Hi Pete! Yeah, just a little man flu 😅 All better now already. Yeah, this first try I thought it was either because it was a NiMH or the Tamiya plug. After this take I tried out a NiMH with a deans. Same result. Then a LiPo. Same result. And then a fourth battery, where it worked for a few minutes. Not sure what it is all about. Had it out on several runs in the lawn in the spring and summer without any cut offs. Hmm 🤪 But cheers, my mate 🙂

    Hi friend! I want to do long races with this car at 22 mph max (maybe less than 1/4 mile) do you think it will hold up or will I wear out the diff or transmission very quickly?

      The gears are nearly bulletproof I would say … unless it gets unbearable hot

    Hey Dude, I had exactly the same problem (8T Carson Dragster + ESC; 19 T pinion gear, R3WP receiver) and at first thought it is an issue of the undervoltage protection because it only appeared when I went full throttle. I have to be honest: I don’t have a fresh 2S LiPo around to perform any kind of comparative study, LiPos are always more resistant towards higher C-Rates (during punches). I am a bit reluctant whether I should buy a fresh set of batteries or look at a „different location“ to resolve this matter. Did you solve this issue in the mean time and what was the cause for this?

      Yeah, got some ‘SUCCES’ videos with it too. Tried another battery with larger mah and it went good

      Yeah, I do have a couple of 50C I think (or 60C) but could be cool to go even higher

    NiMH do not have a high enough C (Discharge) rating. Lipo needed with atleast 90C
