Thanks for the video I was gonna buy the gerber 06 knife until I seen this video. I ended up buying the kershaw blur and I Love it. Hope to see move knife videos again soon
My Tanto Blur is dated sep05 on the blade.. it still has perfect lockup, no up and down, no side to side.. I did adjust the blade pivot torx screw a few years ago and locktite'd it and it has remained perfect every since... The Kershaw Blur is Made in USA... The Gerber is Made in China... Ten Dollars separates them at Walmart.. My Blur turned 10 this past September and its had plenty of EDC pocket time over the years. IMO its the highest quality American produced folders you can buy under a $100 dollars..
I got a Gerber 06 Fast the other day and it has none of these problems. The lock up is as tight as can be, absolutely no play up, down, or side to side. Its razor sharp, I was able to easily shave hair off my arm with it. I have no issues with the slide button. Personally it sounds like he's bashing g the company and sabotaged his knife becuase the pivot screws seem very loose. My knife comes out fast but not quite as fast as his, and it doesn't make any noise when you close it back up.
I have a Fast as well and 8m with you..Mine has no blade play..The lock button does concern me though because it does seem a little chinsy..But mine has zero blade play just like yours..The assisted opening isn't fast either but it always opens and locks. I agree it does seem like his Fast is garbage.
I've never had a problem with my Gerber in 2 years of having it. Gerber doesn't have to compete with Kershaw. Gerber in my opinion is a great knife company.
I have the 06 fast and I'm not seeing any of the issues you listed. No blade play, solid, no problems with the button. Seems solid to me, so I'm not sure if you got a faulty one or if Gerber fixed the known issue. . . hmmm
why you hating on the gerber blade steel is a matter of opinion different people have different preferences and i didn't hear you say that the lock has actually failed so the only thing you got against it is that you got cut by it wile you are shutting it. and a little bit of blade play isn't bad. and the button is a good thing because if that opened in your pocket it would fuck you're hand up trying to take it out.
great video, and review, purchased the gerber 06 before watching your review so far so good. but i was really impressed with your kershaw review, i always thought thy were cheap knifes, but good presentation :)
I have one and now you have me thinking I should return it! My fast does not have any blade play, but not wanting to risk it! Getting the blur most likely tomorrow
I just bought this Gerber two hours ago. When I pulled the knife out of my pocket the thumb stop got caught on the inside of my pocket and the knife opened. I never had that happen with the spring assist system Kershaw uses. I'm going to return this knife tomorrow and buy a Kershaw.
I've seen plenty of videos about quality issues with Gerber knives. At this point I wonder what goes on with that company that has such poor quality control and sometimes entire lines ruined.
I got my Gerber Fast at Walmart too, but mine has absolutely no blade play. it does make that closing noise but yeah it's just the spring mechanism, nothing to be concerned with if it still locks great.
I literally just got the kershaw blur today mines a tanto as well but I have the blackwash finish it's a pretty solid knife from what I can tell I just needed a folder that I can use at work and for protection if need be plus the ccw is my primary defense but it's good to have a knife for general purposes all around their a great tool
@vansurfing this is a line from knivesunlimited Butt aka pommel: the end of the handle portion of a knife. Traditionally, sword and knife butts were heavy and rounded or pointed and served to counterweight the blade, prevent hand slippage, secure the tang, or act as a tertiary weapon. Modern knife butts are either decorative or feature a lanyard hole or compass. Tactical knives often have removable pommels for storing items in the handle.
I had the Kershaw as my daily driver for four or more years and bought the Gerber when I lost it. A buddy of mine, who is also an aficionado had mentioned that he didn't like the blur because it was too thin and, overall, too light weight. So I gave the Gerber a try just based on it being beefier and having a better overall grip. Big mistake. The Kershaw deploys without any effort and easily opens and closes one handed. I worked in a warehouse and used it mainly as a tool for opening boxes. The only time it failed is when I stupidly tried to use it as a pry-bar and broke the tip off. I returned it to Kershaw with a $25 check and they gave it back with a new, factory sharpened blade and lubed the opening mechanism but left the pocket clip as it was (I had modified it slightly to accommodate a thicker seamed pocket). The Gerber was a problem from day one. First of all the pocket clip (despite what I see on your vid) was apparently either reversed in orientation or either on the opposite side to the Kershaw I owned. Instead of pulling and effortlessly deploying the knife I now pull it and fumble for a minute to figure out where the thumb stud is. When I do find the stud, invariably, it is locked (despite my habitually keeping it unlocked) and I spend a few more seconds playing with the locking mechanism to unlock it. When unlocked, the Gerber does not deploy as fast or as effortlessly as the Kershaw and it certainly doesn't feel as natural. Granted, this knife was not in my pocket for years on end but, even so, it shouldn't take this long to pull and open. On the plus side for the Gerber, I don't have anything like the amount of play in the blade either side to side or open to close that you have. My Gerber blade is rock solid when open. The steel may be inferior but unless you're a knife guru you probably wouldn't notice the difference. The Kershaw was kind of a pain to sharpen due to the length of the serrated edge and the much smaller surface area of the blade edge due to the abrupt placement of the angle on the tanto point. And the Gerber grip is definitely more solid than the Kershaw even though, once you get accustomed to it, the Kershaw really isn't bad. The striker on the butt of the Gerber is a nice thought but you'll probably never use it unless you're an EMT in a really dangerous part of the world and it always barks your knuckles or catches painfully on your palm every single time you put your hand in your knife pocket. This is a long post but, tldr, the Kershaw is the better knife by far.
I was seriously considering the Gerber tanto fast as a workhorse edc, but your review change my mind. Told me everything I wanted to know and would have asked. I' now going to purchase the Blur and am excited by it. I remember well the Gerber of old - my last edc from them in the 90's was a clip point gator - and hoped this would be the same. I now see it is far from it. Thank you.
The gerber brand is still good. but they make 2 kinda kinds of Gerber...1 for the budget minded casual knife guy and the serious knife guy. Most of there knifes, they offer a cheaper China made one and then a higher USA made one. And this here is obviously there China line.
I don't think you ever told us why you woudn't use it for stabbing anything. Is it because of the blade play? Or was it something else? I'm knew to knife lingo and good knives in general but I ordered a Blur before watching your video and I'm glad I did. I'm waiting for it to arrive in the mail and was just looking at videos to see what I'm going to get. Great video by the way.
May be true, I have no experience with those blades, but this is a comparison between the blur and fast.. and those blades are in a much more higher price ranges and are made with better materials.
I have a bunch of Kershaw Blurs. They are amazing. I have a free Gerber fast coming in the mail for review. I bought a Gerber 06 auto to compare at the same time.
i know i am late but the auto is the REAL version... the fast is the china version.... i have both if the 'fast' had better steel it would be fine......
Had blur years back. Bought fast 6 today. From time to time I would put blur in pocket and the blade would get caught as I would put it in my pocket and cut my pants. But your video is almost 5 years old. My fast 6 doesn't have that play in it so gerber must have fixed those issues.
Great video knife-buddy! I went to Walmart and saw the 06 FAST and the Kershaw Blur. The FAST release sounded like a novelty switch-blade comb. It creaks. The Blur is amazing in comparison. I however don't believe they are a direct comparison. Rather I think the Gerber Instant is more along the lines of a comparison to the Blur and a possible contender. I own them all and I love the Instant and the Blur alike. Going to do a comparison on paper and vid tonight. stand by.
The real 06 Fast has a button you push to open. It's all metal. It's costs like $ 150-170.......that tanto one is a Walmart thing. If you are going to buy one of those cheap Walmart knives.....Get the Blur.
Actually the gerber 06 fast is it's own model. The one your referring to is the gerber 06 auto. Two different knives. The 06 fast is China made with 7cr steel and is assisted. The 06 auto is USA made with I believe s30v steel (I could be wrong on the steel) and is full auto.
Im sold. Gonna go pick up a Gerber Tanto. Video Makes me miss mine. Real nice solid feel. I can close the gerber with my thumb the Kershaw seems a lot harder to close. im sure its a fine knife. The trick to close it is, you push up the safety to unluck it, and flick it down. and release the lock. And bam. 1 thumb to close
Gerber uses the screws for their cheap screws for their handles too the same knife and sometimes they're not even they're so sharp their bird they cut you
I own a a Blur it is as sweet in my hand as my Para Military 2. The ergonomics are real sweet. I handled a FAST if you like the shake, rattle and roll sound of the parts and the gimpy pivot buy away.
I don't mean to hate or anything. But I have the gerber 06 fast. I modded my button so I can flick it open easier. When I got it, No blade play. And with the noise, just wd-40 it. I think you loosened the knife before it. Sorry man :/
both are good knives, both are sharp as hell, both deploy fast, the Gerber however has a much better handle and grips way better. this video is knitt-picky.
I have a few assisted knives including the blur. The Blur is a awesome knife but Gerber is coming out with some good knives as well. Check out the Instant, I love that knife and it rivals the Blur but at half the price. No blade play what so ever, positive locking mechanism and has kept a great edge, even under daily torture as my EDC. Plus the scales are awesome. Maybe the fast is just a crappy design.
Lol the idea is to flip it out one handed not to close it one handed. As for the plastic bushing my Gerber Fast Draw SE Tanto has a metal one and has no rattle but is also brand new so that was probably changed since this video. If your looking for a knife with lots of strength don't buy folding knives. The idea behind them is for light utility use or small concealable weapon. Gerber makes good knives but not everything they make is the best.
@xFyLxARMORY well i bought it. used it a few times to cut rope out or the brooms on my truck and it turned to shit. then exchanged it and the same thing happened.
Thanks for the positive comment.. I would not suggest using this knife for stabbing because of the lock up on the blade. Yes its too loose ans seems prone to failing at any time. If it was to fail during stabbing it would close up on your fight and pinch the Shit out of them or worse. Cut them. Welt to being a knife nut. Lol your bank accout will hate you lol
Future reference, always introduce and talk about the worse of the two items in your opinion first, it makes for a better build up for product reviews.
I originally bought the gerber fast. had the EXACT same issues with it you are having. I returned it for the blur. WAY better. thanks for the info. Im much happier, and something else that was not mentioned is that i believe the gerber is made in china but the blur is actually made in the us. That is another reason to go for the kershaw. Gerber must be making a KILLING on their knives! cheap parts and foreign labor same price point as a usa made knife with better steel and better bushings and so on. Kershaw all day!
You expect way too much out of a knife. It has to hold a razor sharp edge for forever, be silent enough to assassinate a damn turkey, bolts can't for years, and even though you got two damn hands, you only want to use 1. Sounds like to me you just don't know how to use a damn knife.
So because you cut yourself on a knife being irresponsible you're going to tell people to not buy knife because you cut yourself with it that's not cool
sorry I do not agree with your opinion on this it seems you're just mad because the Gerber cut you I own both knives also and i like the Gerber better I use it everyday for carpentry type work prying up Staples small hard use tasks and it just came out on top every time I've had it for about a year now about the same as I've Had The Kershaw Blur and the blue actually fell apart on me and the Gerber still going strong not even any play in it I have had to sharpen it a few times but that's no big deal I like doing it anyway but that's the good thing about TH-cam we don't always have to agree so good video man
Fast forward 10 years Gerber still make that knife and so lousy quality but the prices went up $68.70 something dollars for that knife plus the Kershaw blurs about 70 something dollars too ridiculous
Thats a bit weird to me, honestly. I own the Mini Covert F.A.S.T and it boast the same safe lock system. It has absolutely no blade play and with the slightest bit of WD-40 "specialist" water resistant Silicone lubricant into both sides of the lock, (safe and deploy modes), which took the brake in period to a matter of seconds. It works phenomenally, a wonderful knife. That happens to be the knife my girl carries for her EDC blade. I use the Gerber Propel Downrange Automatic with lung lock system which has no blade play either. The G-10 Handle scales are magnificently crafted for an unbeatable grip. With a little bit of care and know how to keep the knife in top notch shape put in a little effort. I think you loosened the knife up in this video to be honest. In all my years over all my gerber product none have sucked as badly as displayed in the video.
Look at Gerber knives, they have cheap steels and high prices. Most Gerber knives are a joke and are for tactifools. Kershaw and ZT are much better for the money.
why you hating on the gerber blade steel is a matter of opinion different people have different preferences and i didn't hear you say that the lock has actually failed so the only thing you got against it is that you got cut by it wile you are shutting it. and a little bit of blade play isn't bad. and the button is a good thing because if that opened in your pocket it would fuck you're hand up trying to take it out.

The one-handed thing is immaterial for me.
The 06 Fast is a great knife, despite the Gerber hate online.
Number one thing when you get a knife know how to handle them I got both them knives and they're both pretty good
Thanks for the video I was gonna buy the gerber 06 knife until I seen this video. I ended up buying the kershaw blur and I Love it. Hope to see move knife videos again soon

Carry the thing for awhile, idiot.
Gerber and Fiskars is the same company
I've never had a problem with my Gerber in 2 years of having it. Gerber doesn't have to compete with Kershaw. Gerber in my opinion is a great knife company.
Yea i think the one he has is a foreign made Gerber is still badass even if it has a 7Cr17mov Blade still... Bur I like kershaw a little bit more
I have the 06 fast and I'm not seeing any of the issues you listed. No blade play, solid, no problems with the button. Seems solid to me, so I'm not sure if you got a faulty one or if Gerber fixed the known issue. . . hmmm
Thanks! Was planning on buying the gerber for my wife. I have the gerber hinderer rescue and love it. Think I'll pick her up a kershaw instead.
Don't, the kershaw has a really bad locking mechanism
vandalman8 dont you think your reply is a little too late?
I have the 06 fast and I love it the lock up is super tight ! Call Gerber the knife has a lifetime warranty
The Gerber is really a two hands closing folder ,it can be done with one hand but two is better for safety reasons.

great video, and review, purchased the gerber 06 before watching your review so far so good. but i was really impressed with your kershaw review, i always thought thy were cheap knifes, but good presentation :)
That spring is going to go pretty soon
I've seen plenty of videos about quality issues with Gerber knives. At this point I wonder what goes on with that company that has such poor quality control and sometimes entire lines ruined.
Cheap labour and bad QC in ccp China
I got my Gerber Fast at Walmart too, but mine has absolutely no blade play. it does make that closing noise but yeah it's just the spring mechanism, nothing to be concerned with if it still locks great.
I literally just got the kershaw blur today mines a tanto as well but I have the blackwash finish it's a pretty solid knife from what I can tell I just needed a folder that I can use at work and for protection if need be plus the ccw is my primary defense but it's good to have a knife for general purposes all around their a great tool

cool beans, glad I could help.

I've had the Gerber 06 out of the box good knife. But after a month I had all of the problems you just listed. Returned to walmart and got the Kershaw
Gerber fits better in my hands. I like it better and I can easily close it one handed. I use it at work for cutting up boxes and warehouse stuff.

Iv owned the kershaw for a long time an thought it was great but once i got the gerber i relised what i was missing
Kershaw Blur Tanto is the one, well designed, well made, and solid material.
Great video knife-buddy! I went to Walmart and saw the 06 FAST and the Kershaw Blur. The FAST release sounded like a novelty switch-blade comb. It creaks. The Blur is amazing in comparison. Love your review, just order blur tanto .
Cool I looked at both knife today and thought man Gerber making crab these days
Put some lock tight on the pivet screws.
@NeverknotEDC ok. I just checked. Mine says S30V and made in the USA.
@dhardy6654 sounds like you have the good one then. The 06 auto is fantastic
Before you go putting Gerber down you might want to check the Dmf folder or the Applegate combat folder Both are rock solid, the blur is no match .
Younshud try an Allen wrench, mines tight and it still opens good
I just picked up one on ebay for $21. I hope it's worth at least that much.
This is the cheaper foreign made version. Get the 06 auto usa made.
heyyyyy nice pfp
Kershaw is amazing. Locks tight and does not move at all it is perfect for carry. The grip is amazing
Gerber uses the screws for their cheap screws for their handles too the same knife and sometimes they're not even they're so sharp their bird they cut you
Lol wtf did u do to that knife? I've had mine for a month and its seen some hard use and it has no blade play. Good review anyway
I own a a Blur it is as sweet in my hand as my Para Military 2. The ergonomics are real sweet. I handled a FAST if you like the shake, rattle and roll sound of the parts and the gimpy pivot buy away.
Exactly ! I can NEVER get down with a Gerber ... I absolutely LOVE all my Kershaw Blur's ! Never had the liner lock fail !
+Johnny Wishbone youve never held a fast, how cute.
Did anyone notice he called the Kershaw a gerber when he first opened it
still cool !
Bro looks like you got the Chinese version does the blade say USA or Portland OR
fast is the the chinese knife, auto is the USA knife
I don't mean to hate or anything. But I have the gerber 06 fast. I modded my button so I can flick it open easier. When I got it, No blade play. And with the noise, just wd-40 it. I think you loosened the knife before it. Sorry man :/
both are good knives, both are sharp as hell, both deploy fast, the Gerber however has a much better handle and grips way better. this video is knitt-picky.
I will never buy a liner lock my EDC is a gerber fast draw and it beats my kershaw blur hands down because the kershaw lock failed
I guess it depends on user
I have a few assisted knives including the blur. The Blur is a awesome knife but Gerber is coming out with some good knives as well. Check out the Instant, I love that knife and it rivals the Blur but at half the price. No blade play what so ever, positive locking mechanism and has kept a great edge, even under daily torture as my EDC. Plus the scales are awesome. Maybe the fast is just a crappy design.
Buying one Saturday from a local seller for 25$ used. I'm sure I will love it.
I got 06 fast from the pawn shop for 12 bucks, and its proly not worth that
ouch that's terrible. I'm getting a Kershaw blur :) thanks for the video bro.
Its a glass breaker tip. Not a pomel
I think you have the China made Gerber 06 Assisted Opening Fast model...
You need to buy the USA made gerber knives, those are the good ones!

Gerber has been shitty for a long time...reminds me of mongoose one they went real commercial that was it...I have the s30v blur I really like it alot
You expect way too much out of a knife. It has to hold a razor sharp edge for forever, be silent enough to assassinate a damn turkey, bolts can't for years, and even though you got two damn hands, you only want to use 1. Sounds like to me you just don't know how to use a damn knife.
So because you cut yourself on a knife being irresponsible you're going to tell people to not buy knife because you cut yourself with it that's not cool
best part is when you say it has a shit ton of blade play
sorry I do not agree with your opinion on this it seems you're just mad because the Gerber cut you I own both knives also and i like the Gerber better I use it everyday for carpentry type work prying up Staples small hard use tasks and it just came out on top every time I've had it for about a year now about the same as I've Had The Kershaw Blur and the blue actually fell apart on me and the Gerber still going strong not even any play in it I have had to sharpen it a few times but that's no big deal I like doing it anyway but that's the good thing about TH-cam we don't always have to agree so good video man
and it's funny that large pivot screw you talk about with the Kershaw is actually what failed on me
Thats GREAT, May be i got 2 bad ones in a row. I hope they both last your a lifetime
mine works fine
Fast forward 10 years Gerber still make that knife and so lousy quality but the prices went up $68.70 something dollars for that knife plus the Kershaw blurs about 70 something dollars too ridiculous
Kershaw Blur S30V de-assisted. My choice for a workhorse knife.
@irwindrew well im sure everything is not crap. it just seems like qc went down the drain.
Sorry to here that. sucks to have any knife break down on ya.
Both good brands i have auto gerber dont need the kershaw
Buck 110 right now is about 70 bucks too ridiculous
great video..I subscribed to you sir.
I'm sorry your just weak, you got a put a lot of torque on it but it does tighten
That's what happens when you live in a liberal state. I have the military issued 06 switch blade with s30v steel. And it's as solid as they come!
Does Kershaw support our services no Gerber does and there's a reason for that remember that
Dam you sliced ur finger bad.... dam homeboy you ok.???
where in ohio do you live
The blade play is awful ,Wow 😳 Gerber do better. And I was going to get a second one.
I'll get a Blur instead of another 06 Fast , that pocket knife is jacked up as it gets.
Kershaw got them beat by a decade.
😂 should have got the 06 auto
Look at Gerber knives, they have cheap steels and high prices. Most Gerber knives are a joke and are for tactifools. Kershaw and ZT are much better for the money.
give Gerber knives a call and tell them you are sending it back.
Buy one of their USA made knives, why is it that people can't understand China line bad USA line good.? LOL.
You just like Kershaw more than Gerber grow up
i like my gerber fast 06 but the lock is a peace of shit
Gerber uses crappy screws
Gerber's quality control standard is pretty bad.
Yeah gerber fast is made in china. Kershaw made in usa.. that says it all.. gerber 06 auto is made in usa and is much better
Wow cheap Chinese knock offs have better blade play then that.... Really bad.
why you hating on the gerber blade steel is a matter of opinion different people have different preferences and i didn't hear you say that the lock has actually failed so the only thing you got against it is that you got cut by it wile you are shutting it. and a little bit of blade play isn't bad. and the button is a good thing because if that opened in your pocket it would fuck you're hand up trying to take it out.
