    Steve Earle says more in a phrase than most of us say in a lifetime.

    Damon Thibodeaux, whose name Earle uses in this song ("Give my radio to Johnson, Thibodeaux can have my fan"), was released from death row in Louisiana this week after it was shown that his confession was coerced and the DNA on the scene did not match. Another good reason to oppose the death penalty.

      Sadly, Thibodeaux died recently of Covid: "A man who escaped death row in Louisiana in 2012 after he was exonerated by DNA evidence for a murder he didn’t commit has died of COVID-19.
      Damon Thibodeaux’s death earlier this month was “so unfair,” according to a Minneapolis attorney who worked to free Thibodeaux after 16 years behind bars, including 15 on death row"

      This video was recorded at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto. Our version of Mr. Thibodeaux is David Milgaard. The Tragically Hip have a song Wheat Kings about his story.

    Man, it must be tough singing about a friend, knowing what you know before and his final moments. Jonathan Nobles became a Lay Dominican after God came to him on Death Row. When I hear stories like this, I know they will be ok, if sincere, for God Knows our hearts. From what I read over the years, and from a Dominican friar, he was sincere. What an amazing song. Steve is like misplaced preacher. Beautiful tribute to his friend 🙏

    . I too am against the death penalty... In my humble opinion there are things worse than that... Knowing a few that ended up in Huntsville (TX) is enough to make a believer of that & I was on the outside. Many thanks for all the great gifts of song and story

    Not to mention well written story of a profound friendship. Have you read Steve's essay on this execution? He was asked to be there by Jonathan Nobles. I can't post the link, but if you google Steve Earle and Tikkun (the magazine it appeared in) you should pull up the essay, which is posted on the "unofficial Steve Earle" site.

    Can't agree more with the statement at the beginning of the song. Whether it's an individual or a state, killing is always inherently wrong. A state can imprison someone and keep society safe in most all cases.

    I support the death penalty for those guilty of a select set of crimes. I love Steve Earle's music and this song specifically.

    I am a former soldier, and I can tell you @Bg G That you are...wrong. I was trained and armed. I was sent to places where I was shot at...many times. I saw my friends and people I didn't even know shot and killed. I won't go into any of that. One side...hopefully the RIGHT SIDE has to be the bigger power and judge those who fought against them in a modern way.

      "Just An American Boy" is a 2-CD Live album that was released alongside a DVD of the same name. The track after this on the album is an unbelievable rendition of "Billy Austin", another of Steve Earle's songs about the criminal justice system.

    So, in reality, you do NOT agree with Steve Earle. He is against the death penalty in any form or for any crime. If it is immoral (as I believe) to take a life, it is immoral no matter who the person is. And if you believe Tucker's sentence should be reduced, why not hold the possibility of redemption to any person?

    Will he killed his son when he taught him about drugs and a reckless life. Maybe people should try to improve themselves before preaching to other people.

    • @bellowl
      @bellowl ปีที่แล้ว

      Yet look how your parents raised you. To be the lowest of the low, spouting sick, nasty, nonsense about the absolutely tragic loss of a man's son. Maybe practise what you preach and improve yourself before you dribble out anymore vile missives.

    • @rkoorse
      @rkoorse 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      he shmuck, you could say that about any parent whose son became addicted. You could say the parents somehow did wrong. But once the dead are dead, who TF are you to judge? And WTF would you feel the narcissistic need to throw it out here. Steve is our friend. And you are a dick.
