You are not alone in this. Just be careful and don't start working when you get an instinct about wrong doings in the beginning cause it never ends. good luck.

I’m so glad you stood up for yourself and knew your rights! This was defintely both racism and exploitation. They recognized that you were not from the country and were different than them and decided to exploit you based on that. I’ve been brought up in Canada and I remember applying for part time jobs in highschool where they would think I’m exploitable based on my skin colour and assuming I didn’t know my rights! It’s a terrible feeling and it’s true a lot of our own people exploit international students and migrants :(

True! Very well said! In my personal opinion if someone has a good comfortable life in India then they should not move to Canada.
On the topic of immigration, studying abroad, and also moving abroad, I wanted to share reality of life in Canada, so people in India are not misled by fake social media posts, pictures and videos that glamorize and sugar coat life in Canada.
Even at the risk of being trolled and called 'negative', I tell people, that in my personal opinion, for people that are thinking of immigrating, moving to Canada, but are already well settled in their home country, meaning if someone has a paid off residence, and has a good comfortable life in India, then in my personal opinion , they are better off living there, staying in India, then coming to Canada
If anyone is thinking of settling in Canada, then I would say that come to Canada on trial basis, and see if they would like to call it home.
You don't buy a car without test driving, you don't marry without getting to know your partner to see if you will be compatible, so then why move permanently to a different country without testing it out, to see if it is a good fit for you or not.
The best thing to do, to try it out first, and then based on trial experience, decide on whether or not you want to move there for good. A lot of immigrants make the mistake of not trying it out first, burning all bridges, and just moving abroad right away for good.
Some points to take into consideration before deciding on moving to Canada:
= In Canada summers are short (2-3 months) and sometimes no real summer but winters are Long (and VERY COLD) and for certain there is winter. Many dread winters because it is so bloody cold that the air hurts your face and during ice and snow storms the road conditions are risky, so you rather stay home unless you really need to go out. A lot of people go through winter depression, SAD Seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
= Lack of real true social connections and social life due to the stress of high cost of living (rent or mortgage, insurance etc) and work life balance (people work various shifts and odd days) and the harsh brutal weather (so cold and during snow and ice storms the road conditions are so risky that you wouldn't want to take the chance of driving unless it is absolutely essential)
= No home help because it is very expensive, so all work done by yourself, Iike cooking, cleaning, assembling things, laundry, shoveling snow, back yard etc.
      = High taxes.
= Home ownership and rent is very expensive.
= People who are doctors, physios and chiros and highly qualified professionals from India have to study and gain Canadian experience and certification to get job in their field.
= Appointments for doc appointments, surgeries, specialist appointment take long and even the wait in emergency room is long. Many people don't know that Canada's health care system is in crisis. There is staffing shortages due to which there is temporary emergency room closures and surgical backlogs and very long dreadful wait times.
Right now the health care system is in crisis and everyday in the news we hear off ER departments of hospitals closing early and some closing for the day(s) and as I had mentioned the quality of the health care here is not actually good (very long wait times for surgeries, for specialist appointments, for tests and exams like MRI etc, for doc appointment and very long wait times in the emergency) because of the shortage of health care professionals like docs, nurses etc. The problem of shortage of health care staff has been around for a long time but still the government made it difficult for foreign trained and educated health care professionals to get into the field and now the country's health care is suffering.
=There is shortage of medical staff and nurses
      = Marijuana has been legalized
= International students pay close to triple and quadruple of what locals pay, but one should really look into the results, and check if those students are getting progressive gainful careers, and are they reaching their potential, and getting return on investment.
Many make the mistake of thinking that "all that glitters is gold, and that the grass is always greener on the other side". My advice for people in India that are already well-to-do and well settled, is that if life is good to you, then appreciate it, responsibly enjoy it and also responsibly give back and help.
The saddest part is when people who are living a depressed and miserable life abroad cannot or choose not to move back to home land, because they are worried that people will see them as failure, or make fun, and criticize them, so they lie to others, and continue to live a sad life.
Don't go by fake social media (people will say what will bring them money and make them look good) photos and videos, rather experience it yourself.
A lot of immigrants make the mistake of not trying it out first, burning all bridges (by selling everything off, severing all ties, and having no back up plan of exit and return), and just moving abroad right away for good.
Sometimes it is the fear of public opinion, and being seen as failure for returning from abroad that keeps people from going back, so they continue to live miserably in Canada, passing their days like zombies, dead from inside but faking it from outside. I would advice, don't care what other people think of you, be true to yourself and live happy . I would say, they should not let the worry of what others will think of them, stop them from going back home, being true to themselves, and living where they feel truly happy and at home, because afterall, life is short

      Also:
I was asked "where do you get this idea that Indian students pay triple or quadruple?"
      Answer:
      1. Source
Here: google the title "Skyrocketing tuition for international students questioned" or
Go to cbc.ca and in the search just type the title "Skyrocketing tuition for international students questioned"
In that article it says: "I was shocked to see, on average, international students pay about four times more in tuition than domestic students," said Daniel Je, a content editor at OneClass.
      Here:
      2. Source
Google the title "Do international students get what they pay for?" or
Go to bbc.com and in the search type the title "Do international students get what they pay for?"
      There it says:
"On average, international students in Canada can expect to pay four times more tuition than domestic students."
      Here:
      3. Source
      In google search, please type
"Ontario colleges' reliance on international student tuition 'a risky formula,' auditor general warns" in google search or
go to cbc.ca and in search type that title
"Ontario colleges' reliance on international student tuition 'a risky formula,' auditor general warns"
There it tells you how much revenue international students generate

Honestly, try working at well known chains. Even if it’s a chain of coffee shop like Starbucks or a big grocery store or clothing brands like Lululemon. Their rules and regulations are better. They treat every employee fairly. I’m glad you confronted them and walked out. They should have mentioned in your contract, what exactly your job title is. You always gotta be confrontational with such people at work! You can always tell them you will contact work safe BC if they treat you unfairly!

Hi Sahil, a hotel management graduate here. First of all, I'm so sorry that this happened to you.
The truth about a job in hospitality especially newbies in the front office is that they are expected to have superhuman abilties. We had to stand for 12 to 13 hours (30 mins) and smile and greet people. It's not just physically but mentally stressful when you are having the worst day and you just have to fake a smile. Gruesome to say the least.
And this is the scene in a known Indian brand.
As a student of hospitality we were told that indian hospitality scene is the worst. And peeps from India are known for their "work ethic" so if we struggle here then it's a piece of cake abroad coz hotels outside look forward to indians. So yeah, it is a branch of racism coupled with exploitation.
Sad to see that we are overworked everywhere. Service industry is seriously a thankless job

it happened with me when its my second month in canada i was working as c chef in a punjabi restaurent the manager whose name is manpreet and the supervisor is sharan they both abused me to the next level i was started going into depression they used to say such things to me they scream at me scolds me in front of everyone they make me feel like i am useless i handled this shit for almost two whole months but at some point of time i gets too much when they put hot boiling water on me and my skin from the stomach area got burned then i took a stand for myself i fought for myself i collected proofs and showed to them and i was about to call the cops then the laid on my feet and apolozied for what they did . at the end only thing which matters the most is your stand you should take a stand for urself atleast.

It happens at every store where the staff is asian majority. They want their people to work at higher position and don’t like Indians much. Or they have minimum paying jobs for them. But I believe it can be due to their major asian customer base as well who are tourist here. They prefer to speak mandarin or Chinese due to which they want staff who is fluent in Chinese or mandarin.

Life on foreign land is surely not that easy. People treat you differently on the basis of the race, creed and many more distinctions which actually should not exist. It breaks down the confidence and self-esteem of the person shifting there. They break down emotionally several times. One of my friend's known was studying abroad and was in similar situation. He was not appointed for job just because he was a Sikh. I mean staying in such highly developed countries but their mentality is still the same. We all talk about a modern world existing around us but in reality the world will be developed and modern by our updated minds and not by just maintaining the infrastructure.

@@sahilnarang this is Canada. And if there is any advice I can give you as a Canadian born Indian girl… it’s that you’re gonna get treated so unfair. You also live in bc which is the worst lmao. Omg I wish I could call you and tell you all about Canada and just how to be smart and safe. But I understand about how you want to be treated. It’s not that amazing here as it sounds back in india. I went to india and I was like why on earth do people leave india and come here. Life’s way more harder here. In india you guys live like kings and queens. Here you have to be kissing peoples assess to get anywhere you want to in life. It’s actually quite sad. But I wish you the best ❤️
