      @@megandonahue9220 I actually think it’s the smaller seal. It doesn’t work properly because I have to use it on the new jars like that too that aren’t wide mouth.

      Adding an extra lid works

  • @horticultureandhomes
    @horticultureandhomes ปีที่แล้ว +59

    IT DOES WORK!
    Leisa, I have old jars and both sealers. The reason the old jars don't seal is because of the wider glass lip just below the threads does not allow the sealer to seat all the way down on the lid. Both will work with the old jars if you place a second lid upside down on the sealing lid as a spacer. This allows the device to seat properly and will seal the jars.

      Some of my older jars will not work with vacuum sealing. Some will work for canning. I mainly use the ones that will not seal I use with plastic lids for something in my cabinets.

    • @horticultureandhomes
      @horticultureandhomes ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SuttonsDaze Did you press down on the jar while it's pulling the vacuum?
      You may also seal the old jars in the freeze dryer or in a chamber vacuum sealer. I can seal half gallons in a vacmaster vp 215. Hope this helps.

    • @kntry4ever

      I have new jars but run into the same issue. I use the 2nd lid method upside down on lid on jar and seals great with no effort.

    • @horticultureandhomes
      @horticultureandhomes ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SuttonsDaze one other thing is to use a new lid or one that came off an old jar. The old jars are thicker and don't fit the skinny groove in a used lid from a newer jar. Hope that makes sense.

    When you can water to test the jars put a different color food color in each jar so you can see which one leaks. If they seal you can still drink the water.

    The old rims are thicker than the new rims on jars, hence the sealant is less wide also. My old lids seal (vacuum) on the old jars because the sealant is wider. .08 hundredths inch in way different than .13 hundredth inch. Check out with your calipers.

    They won’t seal sometimes on those old jars because of the shoulder shape of these jars. I place an orange rubber seal on the shoulder of the jars and it usually seals by holding the Foodsaver gadget. The Country Harvest is sold in Canada along with Bernardin. I can in the old Made in Canada Crown Jars with the glass lids. Seals are still sold in Canada at our Canadian Tire stores. These jars of over up to 100 years old.

    It's cool they have a new sealer. The old one burned my crank if you know what I'm saying and I just use a brake line bleeder with the old one. That does work great and seals both size lids. I wasted money with a vacuum sealer thingie which did not work on it. The brake line bleeder is slick.

    I had the same issue on the square old jars. Look at the neck how thick the ledge is that sticks out from the jar. Ts almost lijeca decoative ledge. It's actually blocking the sealer from coming down as far as it should to work properly.
    They can be used in canning just fine.

    So what I have found that works well is….if you have the food saver kit that came with plastic storage canisters, put the jar of pasta in the large canister with the lid placed on the jar. Then continue to seal the canister as usual. When completed and sealed, you then can take the top off the canister and the jar inside will be sealed. It works every time.

My big bulk stuff I vacuum seal with bay leaves with my food saver bags and then put in mylar bags with O1 absobers and keep in totes. I would love jars but the cereal containers arent breakable and I can buy in bulk and store up to 10 lbs in each one. I think there's a slight difference in the height of the neck of the old jars vs "modern" ones. When the sealer (either brand) it has to fit tight against something in order to pull the vacuum. I think that's the wide ring around the jar at the 1" mark. If that is too far from the top of the jar (older older ones), the vacuum can't be pulled. Suspect that why putting 2 lids on regular mouth jars has worked for FoodSaver jar sealer.
    Just a thought.....

    • @horticultureandhomes
      @horticultureandhomes ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not the neck it's the glass lip just below the threads which protrudes further than newer jars so the sealer doesn't seat all the way down.

    I put boxes of pasta in plastic totes inside my cabinets and haven’t had an issue. I did this after a bout with mice a couple years ago and so I also put a sticky trap in the back of the cabinet… have yet to so much as catch an ant on it. It’s been a few yrs since I repainted the inside of my cabinets but I’ve thought about looking into mint scented oil for paint (if they make mint, they make other scents) since rodents don’t like mint. Since I’m about to pull my cabinets and clean and repaint them inside. Edit: I even put all my store bought can goods in the totes because when we had the mouse fight I realized if it happened again I didn’t want to worry about all the surfaces of the cans being compromised, so now if it happens it’s just the outside of the totes that would be most compromised.

    Thank you for mentioning mylar! I dont have many half gallon jars so mylar is cheaper for me. I just used it for pasta in the working pantry because it got moved to the humid basement 😢 (not my choice!). I dont heat seal or O2 absorbers because ill be in and out of them a bit. So far so good!

    If you cant get them to seal just use them for kitchen food storage

    Yeah. Those old ones seem to have a slightly narrower flat area on the rim where it comes in contact with the gasket. I noticed and wondered if it wld be an issue. I have some full of water with tattlers, some full of meat or fruit and regular metal flats, and a couple wide mouth kerr oldies I use because my cold brew pour tops fit on them better than other wide mouths. I think they're pretty.

    If all else fails, you will just have to use those beauties for fermenting!

    Regular jars sometimes need double lids.

    I didn't see you put an oxygen absorber.
