Much Abrew: Sunbird's Treasure (Standard, Magic Arena)

- Welcome to another episode of Much Abrew About Nothing. This week, we have a surprise special episode of Much Abrew. Technically, the most popular Instant Deck Tech from last week was the Infinite Scepter combo deck for Modern from Fishbowl Thursday, but after a rough outing at FNM, the deck's creator suggested that we shouldn't actually play the deck for videos. The runner-up deck tech was Esper Hatebears for Standard, but we already played it on stream last week. As such, I figured that rather than playing an Instant Deck Tech deck this week, we'd play a fun deck that I really wanted to show off: Sunbird's Treasure!
You might remember this deck from the Twitch Rivals event a couple of weeks ago, but the event itself had a lot of byes, and we didn't get to play that many games with the deck. It seems super fun-maybe even one of the most fun decks in Guilds of Ravnica Standard when it works-so it seemed worth giving the deck the proper video treatment. The main plan of the deck is to use some strange Treasure token makers like Captain Lannery Storm and Pirate's Pillage to ramp into Sunbird's Invocation and then sort of combo off by using the enchantment to cast a bunch of Nexus of Fates. Eventually, we find a Niv-Mizzet, Parun with our Sunbird's Invocation and get a strange sort of storm combo kill as we take a bunch of turns in a row. Just how good is Sunbird's Treasure in Standard? dmany13 thanks, it did really well the first time I played it, but I believe that was pure dumb luck. Tried it again at my LGS on Saturday and went 0-5. It was the most soul crushing thing ever.

It's a really cool deck! I've been messing around with it a bit. I think the biggest issue is consistency. Maybe more Tezzeret's could help as a way to find combo pieces and also as backup win conditions.
Opponent is at 237 life, Seth has nothing in play or in hand and is facing lethal 30 times over.

It does happen sometimes. More often with people streaming than TH-cam, but every once and a while both sides of the match show up on youtube.

I was saying the same thing. He also held Cannonade longer than he should have allowing his opponent to reach later turns where Vivien, Vraska, and Carlos Tyrone aka Carnage Tyrant live.
@@trewilliams383 How could he have avoided carnage? Op would get there anyway cause the creatures would explore on etb and get him lands eitherway, its inevitable, GB is just gooood lol
@@welersoncarvalho4245 The opponent drew the land naturally. Thus using the Cannonade to kill the board would have saved damage, perhaps brought us a turn or two. Not likely to pan out but you play to your odds.

I have a super janky against the odds- Sunbird's Invocation + thousand year storm
it's only from your hand though, so it doesn't cast your whole deck of sunbirds the way you want.

Ugh that first opponent round 1 missed 6 damage from midnight reaper. Not sure what he was thinking. Just too greedy. If midnight reaper trades for a creature it's still a 2 for 1.

At 32:12 you should have played the Treasure Map. It was cheaper because of Immortal Sun but Arena didn’t show that.

For reference, you don’t have to full control to use expansion, it automatically holds priority for you
Arena is a little clunky with priorities right now, so I can see why a little more insurance is a right thing =)
I tend to go into full control whenever I'm not 100% sure Arena is going to work the way I want it to, just to be save.
On the sidebar, why are Nexus of Fate and Expansion/Explosion green?

10:02 I feel that you should skip your scry for the turn, attack next turn, then cast Pirate's Pillage with Expansion to draw 4 make 4 treasure. Or is this too risky of a line?

46:00 saccing treasure means 1 less mana for Explosion which means you lost a point of damage. I guess you get to see a card earlier but I don’t know if that’s worth it.

Might be worth it as a way to deal with Carnage Tyrant.
@MTGGoldfish You don't need full control to copy spells with expansion, game will give you time to respond to any spell that can be copied by expansion.
Ah, sweet! I tend to go into full control whenever I'm not sure if something will do that it wants. Next time I'll try it without on expansion / explosion.
How about a Precognition Frenzy deck for standard?
Could be a fun Against the Odds card.

I do not know what you might think of this statement or question there Seth but do you ever get the feeling that other players when they go up against you are always going to be in a horrible predicament from the get go as far as thought processes are concerned with them being your opponent?

you have to keep putting the stop on upkeep each individual turn? that's kinda dumb
Yeah. On Arena you can go into full control mode and have stops for everything or manually set stops every turn (I think).
Oh jeez. I played against this deck.
You don't need to go full control when you have expansion in hand, Arena asks you if you want to resolve the stack.
Ah, good call, I'll try it without full control next time. I tend to be extra careful with going into full control if I"m not 100% confident that Arena works the way I hope it will.

why do you mute arena? The animations must be the best thing of the program
I need to run a poll and see what people want. Normally I play with everything except the music, but everyone has their own taste when it comes to sound fxs on Arena.

Invocation is so underrated
It just upsets me that a lot of these cool standard cards feel like they are slightly too expensive. Like, Sunbird's Invocation, Divine Visitation, New Perspectives, Brass's Bounty. One or two mana less could make them great.
WantedWarlock or broken... sunbird’s is still kinda broken at 6 mana.

If you can untap with it it's one of the best cards in Standard. The challenge is casting a six-drop and not dying before you untap.

I think I would have called this deck Sunbird's Nexus instread of Sunbird's Treasure.

sunbirds is fun but lich's mastery decks are my favorite atm. Did see merchant sunbirds with thousand year storm into about 7 copies of star of extinction to kill all the things and that was pretty epic.. not as epic as being negative life laughing as they struggle against lich but pretty close

Feel like if I was playing this in BO1 I’d add in sailor of means and Wily Goblin for the Lannery Storm.
Sailor is good against aggro. You lose the upside of getting two Treasure sometime, but it's a much better blocker.
@@MTGGoldfish I'd probaby make two or three versions of the deck to ladder and switch rhem up depending on what I'm running into at that moment.
Is there a way to add white for truefire captain and deafening Clarion? This looks amazing
The Treasure do make it pretty easy to splash, so I think it's possible to go Jeskai. Captain is a little harder thanks to double white, but it still could work.

On your third win you didn't even need Nexus of fate they were just dead to playing lannery storm, swinging with her and niv, and saccing the treasure token lannery gives you

Budget Magic is still 100% Magic Online, the other series are basically 90% Magic Online, although once and a while Arena slips in.

This needs Mirari's Conjecture instead of Blink of an Eye or the the singleton Negate. Imagine 2 Subirds Invocation with Mirari 3rd saga casting Nexus of Fate. 2 Turns, 4 digs through 28 of your cards that you're almost 100% sure to hit at LEAST 1 more Nexus of Fate, again triggering Conjecture 3rd saga, for 2 more turns, ect ect. You get it.
Sounds very win more, if you have a sunbirds out you're almost certain to win already. Blink and negate help protect it and you to get to casting the first sunbirds.
mirari's 3rd lore doesn't affect sunbird's invocation because you're only copying the spell, not casting a copy of the spell. this is an important distinction
Mirari triggers off the spells being cast, thus 2 of those spells, thus 2 sun birds triggers.
Not a win more. It's fantastic for getting back sweepers or doubling up a sweeper or explosion. There's a reason 5c lich runs it.
@@danarennick7003 5c lich runs it for the turns combo with getting back instants and sorceries along with the value it provides. It doesn't do anything better than sunbirds for this deck
@@danarennick7003 mirari triggers off a spell cast, so you make a copy, but that copy doesn't trigger sunbird, only the original spell does. thus, only one trigger per sunbird even with mirari. you only dig 14 cards with two sunbirds

What is it about MTGO that makes it easier to see? The card text looks smaller, but is it that cards have (some of) their text visible in hand?
@@TheOnlyOrk Its hard to read because it dosent show the card text of any permanent in play or hand.
@@MWorl91 Essentially all standard content is in Arena. Which is about 70% of mtggoldfishes content.
We still play mostly MTGO, but Arena does slip in every now and then.
