Parade of Steam Trains - Durango and Silverton Railroad

- Every year as part of "Railfest", the Durango and Silverton runs a "Parade of Trains", where a bunch of trains leave or arrive within a short period of time. The 2013 Railfest was no exception. In this video, you will see all of the trains leaving plus a few extras. Subtitles are included.

I have ridden this train twice now, & it's a treat. If you love trains like I do, ride this train at least once. It's a beautiful ride.
I loved that video Mike - steam engines are my first love and this line is an outstanding example of vintage American railroad practice. The train services seemed quite intensive which is great for the enthusiast. Great work and thanks. Ken
This past winter was crazy all over. It actually snowed in Greer,SC(near Greenville) on Christmas Day for the first time in 20 years. Thanks for the info. Maybe we will see you in Durango railfanning. We live in Pa and we had a harsh winter with snow and a lot of ice.
I Really Love the Blast of the Whistle! Beautiful Sound.
The D&S has 8 operational steam locos: (3) K-28 Alcos, (4) K-36 Baldwins, and (1) K-37 Baldwin. With the exception of the K-37, the other (7) have been in continuous operation for between 99 and 100 years. All are 2-8-2s. One of the K-28 Alcos has been awaiting a full 1400 hour inspection and overhaul, postponed until the others are converted from coal to oil burners. The K-37 was in storage for a while, but was the initial engine converted to oil. The daily 9:00 train to Silverton is double-headed 99% of the time, from May through October, and the daily 9:45 train to Cascade Canyon, being a smaller consist, is single-headed. With its (8) operational steam locos, the D&S is among the largest operators (by number) of any railroad in the U.S.

Hi Mike, Have to postpone the trip to Durango. Finally making our retirement move to South Carolina. Glad to be getting away from this winter weather in Pa. Still want to make the trip to Durango another year. Sillyone52062, thank you for the tip. We will definitely keep that in mind.

Hi Mike, planning to ride the Durango and Silverton next year in the beginning of May. Hope the weather is good at that time. Is it? Love your videos. My grandfather worked for the Reading Railroad in Reading Pa back in the 30's and 40's.
Thank you for the comment! The weather can be quite variable in May. It's usually pretty nice but this year, it actually snowed in early May!
If you ride in an open car, wear old clothes! The wood-burning locomotive spews out a lot of sparks. I rode on the D&S in 1985.
