+naniunina Same for me. I see him as the center of focus. He has twice the area showing as the man in the coat and he's much closer to the upper and left thirds. But everything else sounded right to me.
+naniunina Sure you could look there. But I look at the pirate to the far right because most of his clothing is dark compared to the pirate to the left. The pirates shirt on the left is less contrasty. It's not always about laser beaming into one thing, sometimes just looking into the vicinity of an area is enough. It's also about you say potato and I say potato. ;)
I notice the full figure guy standing at the left. And also that half the picture is sand. I think he's trying something very daring in that he's perhaps making you feel like your in the middle of nowhere and yet very confined. I feel these guys are all prisoners held at gunpoint. They can't run away because they could easily be shot if they try. It's probably a mutiny and the captain's been shot. If I'm wrong it's not my fault that's what the picture conveys. I don't know what the context actually is so I'm a good test subject.

in the first painting. the thing that caught my eye first was the pirate standing up on the left. cause we read from left to right, right?
