I wish you had elaborated on the rectifier hook up. I have the same bike and I’m trying to convert to 12v. I converted all the bulbs and installed a 12v battery. It works great but I have to recharge the battery after every ride. I can’t find any info on how to convert the 1 wire, yellow/white ac generator wire to 12v dc to charge the battery. Any help would be appreciated. Especially what rectifier to purchase. Also I assume I would also need a voltage regulator?)
Got me thinking on this now……. I would use a diode and a capacitor (no battery). I can email you a diagram (Diode 1N5408, capacitor 2200microfarad). I didn’t test this but should work. I might do a video on this soon.
@@WeekendHobbyMechanic that's cheaper than I was thinking so my motor is sized also if I can't get it unstuck. you got a recommended place to buy a XL 500?
Great videos! I’m in the process of improving the wiring on my 79; going to be taking it on a vintage 1000 enduro rally in June
Awesome…
That looks great, I like the look of the old XRs. In my opinion I like the tank the way it is.
I might leave the tank as is. (The tank is only original once).
Coming along nicely great job
Thx man.

How much you think this rebuild ran you in parts? I got an old 80 xl250s
Total cost in parts was $1350us and $300us for the bike.

I look for parts here in Canada on Kijiji.ca. And I also look on Facebook (Private Groups). Search for XL500s and you’ll find them. Just join up.

What's the paint code of that red?
It’s called Honda R23 Tahitian red. ColorRite makes it sells it, SKU#2095.
I just brought my side cover to Napa and they color matched it.
