      Yaeh we had a cat live in our yard for half a year hiding in the bushes then a week before we were going to get a new cat from the pound because our old cats had passed away of old age. She started making odd noise and demanded attention and to come inside, 2 months and a week later she popped out 4 boy balls of fur.

      My neighbour adopted a 4 month old kitten, just after she moved in. She brought baby out to meet me, in the driveway. Tizzy *ran* up to me, doing little bunny hops and head bumping my hands, like I was her old friend. I fell in love with her immediately and as I admired and petted her, the thought popped into my my mind: I’m going to end up with this cat.
      I felt it was prophetic. It took 14 months and sometimes I thought that maybe I’d gotten it wrong-not that it was a voluntary thought-it was just *there.* So, long story short, she came to live with me and lived a happy life. Always felt like we’d known each other before.

      Cats definitely have a preference where they live. I've seen barn cats say "I'm retired" and move indoors, and I've seen cats that were being forced to be inside cats that hated it. Our cat KT (RIP) showed up one day and established himself as a cat that liked options so we let him come and go as he pleased, turns out his previous owner tried to keep him indoors so he ran away. KT lived 15 years with us enjoying his daily outdoor time, coming home for dinner and snuggles.

I was sitting on the couch with my girlfriend watching TV and all of a sudden there was a commotion at the front door screen. sort of bumping scratching and of course the yowling - not in pain - just like "HEY! LET ME IN!". I walked to the door and there was a small Siamese cat just looking up at me like "well fool? open the door" I opened the door, she walked in, jumped on the couch, turned around3 times and promptly went to sleep. had her for almost 11 years. best snuggler ever. still miss her all these years later. don't tell my current cat.

      That's what I saw too. I knew a couple of cats that my friend had, and when she moved to a new house, her cats didn't get as much attention as they were used to. So when I visited, they were just the most affectionate things ever. And I was taken aback by this, because I never knew them to be that affectionate. One of them, a girl, didn't even like me touching her before. But then, she was demanding pets from me, and trying to lick my face.
      Fortunately, I much more readily accept kisses from cats than from dogs.

    2-5 years is the average life span for outdoor cats in the US. Keeping him indoors truly is what is best for him. So glad that he lived through being hit. I too took in/adopted a neighborhood cat after she got violently ill one summer. She'd also been friending my family prior to her getting sick. Now she's a full indoor girl who doesn't have to hide from cars, coyotes, or kids in the gutters and she never has to worry about fleas or parasites again. She's as spoiled as it gets and we hope to have her until she's in her 20s.

    • @CleaSelene
      @CleaSelene 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thank you for actually mentioning the US part explicitly. Cause it's so interesting how different things are in different countries. In Germany and Switzerland, for example, a large amount - arguably the majority - of shelters / fosters actually demand you to be able to provide cats with outdoor access or they don't let you adopt. Not saying that's ideal (especially since I'd argue say a 3 room apartment and 24/7 love is better than spending years alone in a shelter cell waiting for someone with a garden) - but just saying, it's important to remember statistics and the dangers vary (e.g. in our area we have no strays, veeery few wild animals that would venture close if at all, much more narrow / low-traffic streets, etc.). Though I'll be honest, I personally wish we could escape-proof our garden so the cats could have the best of both worlds but we could still keep them safe. Sadly, not an option at the moment.

      @@TieDyeVikki Thank you for explaining:). Yeah, even knowing that I'm female, I've had some people ask me if it's "is" on the end, and I have to correct them! What's really ironic is that I go by my middle name, Alane, but some years ago I got "unrecognized" by Facebook and I had to put my first name on there, lol!! That poor little guy, they called him "Cortez" so we left his name at that, he was Chihuahua with brindle coloring, I don't think he was happy there and he liked something about my brother I guess... But back in the day, there wasn't as much awareness regarding spay/neutering and my grandmother who lived with us thought having a dog neutered "denatured" him and was cruel in her mind, so this little dog, even though he seemed happy to live with us and we showered him with love and attention, would get out from under the chain link fence and go after this little gal that belonged to my friend Pam. Her name was "Sugar," and she was some kind of Scottish terrier with black scruffy hair, you know.. Tragically, one day he was instantly killed by a car right outside our house, when the 2 of them were coming back from a ditch area:(((. She was pregnant though, and we got 2 little puppies of his, Corrie and Chummie. Chummie lived to age 12, with kidney failure, and Corrie lived to around 16 years, when she had a heart attack or stroke or something when we were out of town and my mother's boyfriend was there. At least we had some healing by giving long, full lives to his children. We only got to enjoy him not quite 2 years I think.

      We presently have fifteen cats all neutered well fed and cared for. They can come and go as they please, one chooses to be almost permanently indoors while another only visits for food and a cuddle, others all points between. They are free to live their lives as they want. I notice as they age that they spend more and more time indoors with us especially in winter time. I don't think it is abusive to let them have as much freedom as they choose, we have never lost one except three have died of natural causes in our home, we do live in a quiet rural location though.
