I have the version of this with the music - I've had it since 2003. My wife and I flew from the other side of the world to watch the Opportunity launch. We were in Florida for three weeks and it was due to launch two days after we arrived but because of a series of problems and a scrub on a scheduled launch night it didn't get away until three nights before we came home. Even then, it was touch and go - the count was stopped at T-minus seven seconds! We felt like running in circles, flapping our arms because our go-home date was set in stone and another scrub would be the end for us. However, they fixed the problem, re-set the count to T-minus 4 minutes and launched! It was our first and only launch - we dipped out on two Shuttle launches - and the sight and sound of that glorious rocket rising into a clear night sky will stay with us forever. You have to hand it to the JPL. They really know how to get the most bang from their buck. Opportunity was designed to work for ninety days. It lasted fifteen years!
Dude that's awesome! Do you know if the original with music can be found on the WayBack Machine or anywhere else? I think there's an upload somewhere on youtube
@@marcstergeorge7065 I heard that the original featured a Lenny Kravitz song - "Fly Away", I think - during the liftoff and ascent to orbit sequence, which he later had removed. My version has a different selection of music - I was given it on DVD when I worked for the NASA Quest online education programme between 2000 and 2003 and I haven't seen that version posted anywhere.
@@MarsFKA Oh that's awesome! I remember the Fly Away version with lots of nostalgia but unfortunately it's hard to find many versions of it at all. Hopefully more can be done to preserve stuff like that!
@@MarsFKA did you know that the first landers and orbiters arrived at Mars in 1976. 2 landers and 2 orbiters. But if you want duration. Look at Voyager 1 launched in 1977 and still communicating with earth from over 15 billion miles away.
@@petersearls4443 Thank you. I do know about the first landers and orbiters in 1976. They were called Viking I and 2. I also know how long each Viking lander and orbiter lasted, but the first soft lander on Mars was the Soviet Mars 3 in 1971. It touched down, sent twenty seconds of garbled transmission, then went silent.
Yes, these two will always have a special spot in my heart. I was 13 when they landed, it was the first landing I deliberately made an effort to follow, and I "checked in on them" every now and then, every few months, over the years. It was a bit like losing a pet you grew to love when first Spirit, and then Opportunity, went silent.

In the older rover missions, the descent stage stays but the airbag with the rover moves away from the descent stage. But in the previous two missions, the rover stays but the descent stage moves away from the rover. Am I getting it right?
Previous missions used solid retrorockets and airbags as we didn’t have the technology to pinpoint a landing there yet. Now we use sky cranes which uses hypergolic propellants to slowly touch the rover down, detach, and then fly away.
